If it is left up to the players vote as to who they want in the leadership, how would anyone get to be excluded.
The only way would be for players not to vote for a certain individual.

If Pert/Walsh/Bucks have the ability to exclude certain players then the whole process is a sham anyway.

Either its left to playing group or its determined by others, I don't think we can have some sort of hybrid version.

I think it depends on the function of he leadership group.

For example, a lot is made of the Captain being a leader of [/b]the club[/b] and not just the team. And so Pert/Walsh/Buckley/McGuire need to have a guiding hand in that selection process because they have a perspective and responsibility that an 18 year old rookie casting his vote doesn't.

I think a hybrid version works absolutely - and it would work by Pert/Walsh/Buckley excercising veto over who nominates themselves.

Is it organised so that each of the junior leadership positions comes from the back, mid and forwards?

If that's the case, it's easy to see why Shaw got up ...

Leon's gone.

Maxy is already the Captain.

Harry has been there and done that, and will be focusing on his footy and saving the world.

Brown hasn't played for a year and needs to focus on his footy.

Goldy and Buckley haven't been consistently holding a spot. Buckley hardly strikes me as leadership material (strange sentence now that I read it :))

Tarrant and BJ strike me as the types who just want to keep it simple and play footy. And who knows how much they're going to a part of the 2012 campaign as young lads come up through the fold.

So that leaves Reid and Tooves. Reid could probably do with another season under his belt. And Tooves, well he was on the brink of leaving the club only a few months ago and it wasn't handled the best way - mostly by his manager. Not sure if and how that would affect things.

I think going through the list, Shaw would seem an obvious choice if his last year's indiscretion is conveniently overlooked.
O'Brien is still in the leadership group obviously alongside Maxwell. Shaw wasn't selected because of his position because it was Swan and Jolly who stepped aside.

Need to have some wedge into the rat-pack. Shaw this time surely won't screw it and Tarrant is desperately keen for a flag and much more mature. I think Swanny wants it for Tarrant and BJ equally.

Less Jack-the-Laddism with this group. Daisy enjoys a laugh, but now with him there we will have much more connection with the youngsters.

Trav has wanted it a few years so good to see he is being rewarded because hje's played exemplary football, especially in 2011. Dawes was an obvious forward candidate, but he needs a better season and will to my mind keep striving.

In short, we will have official and unofficial leaders everywhere. You need sometimes to put that formal responsibility on players for them to really step it up a notch and take it seriously.

In the backline the official leaders are Maxwell, O'Brien and Shaw and unoffical leaders in Tarrant and Brown.

In the midfield we have Pendlebury, Ball, Daisy and unofficially Jolly and Swan.

In the forward line Travis and unofficially Dawes.
