He played a lot of his junior career as a forward however has always had the versatility to play either end. This year in the VFL he played as a key back with a lot of success against AFL listed players.
He would indeed, but that wouldn't be out of the question, I wouldn't think. As far as I'm aware, he played on the other team's "big banana" in the VFL finals this year and reportedly did an amazing job each week.

If we aren't going to get anyone like him in the ND, maybe we'll look to grab them in the rookie draft and make them our "nominated rookie".
Fair enough, I was just going off an afl.com.au article where he described himself as athletic and skinny. Not really the attributes we want! But happy to take into account your opinion, since I haven't seen much of him, except a highlights package!

This is the article I read:

What about demotion. I'd be sure Winmar is headed for the rookie list, no? We'll have to make room on the senior list if were gona pick up a senior in the draft.
Thought this was relevant:

The AFLPA is troubled by the emerging trend of clubs delisting contracted players.

(Essendon delisted) untried forward Ariel Steinberg ... despite the Bombers announcing in mid-August a contract extension for the 20-year-old to the end of 2013. That contract will be honoured although Steinberg will, barring being drafted by a rival club, be serving it as a rookie rather than a senior-listed player.

GWS axed playing assistant coach Dean Brogan on Tuesday – just a fortnight after announcing the ruckman would be retained – while North Melbourne earlier cut Matt Campbell. Other clubs are still to finalise their lists and there is a suspicion Fremantle may cut two more contracted players.

A contracted player who is delisted is still required to be paid his full entitlements under his contract but if he is retained as a rookie-listed player the club does not have to include the rookie component of the contract in the salary cap.

The player, however, has to go through the uncertainty of a draft again while still a contracted player.

I haven't seen him at all, but I've read a couple of articles on how well he performed in the VFL finals this year, on the likes of Geelong's Mitch Brown and Nathan Vardy, etc and he came highly recommended to me by someone who's opinion I somewhat rate on these things, who I'm pretty sure has seen him play.

That article on AFL.com is two years old, in case you didn't see the date, although he is still pretty skinny, going by a photo I posted of him a couple of days a go. So that may count him out of our calculations.

I don't pretent to know more than the club but going into last season with no back-up ruckman or key defender was an extraordinary decision and I don't want to see similar decisions made this year.
I was suprised at the lack of back up ruck. Even in 2011 I considered we had been very lucky with McEvoy, and its not like there were none available.
I guess Dawkson walking out may have caught them off guard, and they clearly expected Wilkes to have more capability there ( based on his previous Eagles experiece ) than he currently displays.

Interestingly "Knightmare" stated that Lee was "very good" in defense, and while we ultimately want him to be a forward, it may be that he becomes a defender this year.
A flexible player might be useful.
Example: Blake plays full back , Sippos half back flank, Lee forward.
Blake is bleeding goals. Sub Blake off, Lee to full back, Sippo moves forward.

Good point - yeah, I didn't notice the date of the article

MASON SHAW (taken from AFL.com's article on him today):

Downside: Shaw's confidence appeared to take a bit of a hit after he suffered his facial injury and a prospective AFL club will need to work with him to make sure he regains the swagger that most good power forwards play with. He'll also need to further develop his rucking if he's to relieve a lead ruckman at AFL level.

Plays like: Shaw is a big strapping forward in the mould of Collingwood's Travis Cloke. He's excellent overhead and very strong in a contesting marking like the big Pies' forward.

Draft range: Shaw didn't quite come on as many thought he would this year, which will give recruiters pause for thought. For that reason he probably slides to the back end of the first round or even into the second where St Kilda, Port Adelaide and the Brisbane Lions will be waiting to pounce.

I take their point with Brogan, its pretty low to delist a player "AFTER" the free agency period, but maybe Brogan is a club man at GWS now and agrees whith what they are trying to do. ( for example if he stays on as a coach and gets paid the same ).

As for the rookie thing. Its because the player is spudding it up, and the club probably wont use them next year. Tell the AFL to change the rules for these guys ( ie allowing them to dodge the draft ) dont go sooking to the media. A few years ago we saw StKilda forced to rookie Allen for a season even though he could not possibbly play. We also saw Blake go in the draft to get him off the vet list and onto the main list.

I really dont like the way the AFLPA go about their business sometimes.

I agree - highly unlikely. But what's Nick Rodda's story? At 194cm 94kg, he's ready-made if going on those stats, and reportedly uses the ball well by either foot.
Joe Daniher destroyed him.

Probably unfair to be judged on one bad game, but yeah severely had his colours lowered that day.

Interestingly Tanner Smith was listed to play for North Ballarat against Sandly last season. Unfortunately it was a crap day, and while Archer and Dowler were both pretty ordinary there is no mention of whether or not Smith may have helped the prevailing weather conditions to achieve such a result. ( Discussion is right at the start of the Sandy 2012 part 2 thread - apparently Archer was dismal ). Pretty sure Squizzy is over 40 so he probably cant even remember being there by now, though maybe he remebers being particularly cold and wet.

Saw that someone mentioned on another thread that we are very keen on Josh Saunders, who I don't remember having read about before. Reportedly spent a lot of this year playing school footy for Geelong College, but also played some games with the Falcons, in the TAC Cup and made the Vic Country squad for the champs (not sure if he played any games for them in the end or not).

Apparently has the rare combo of very good pace, but also terrific endurance, that allows him to run at that pace all game and reportedly also has the ability to play both inside and outside. He's tipped in most areas to go late draft or rookie draft, so if we are interested in him it may be in the rookie draft (although Essendon are apparently also keen and they now have a heap of late picks in the draft, so he may not last that far).

EDIT: Just saw his highlights package on the Draft Machine and he has some serious wheels! Someone else said he reminded them of Nathan Foley and they were spot on with that comparison, I reckon. Just seems to see a gap in the pack and zooms through it and then he's off to the races!

This was also Tweeted about him: "Geelong Falcons@GeelongFalcons
The coaches award went to Josh Saunders who finished the year really well and improved his understanding of the game immensely…"

Are you even sure that he can remember if he is over 40 or not?
