A few had expressed interest in this guy (update):

http://news.brisbanetimes.com.au/br...ns-yet-to-resign-afl-deal-20120917-2628i.html

West Coast are confident veteran forward Quinten Lynch will re-sign with the AFL club, but midfielder Koby Stevens could seek a trade after struggling for game time this season.

Victoria-born Stevens has notched just 11 games since being taken at pick No.23 in the 2009 national draft, with four of those appearances coming this year.

West Coast are keen to retain the 21-year-old, but Stevens may opt for a trade in order to gain better exposure.

"Koby's no different to a lot of young guys - if they don't get opportunity, obviously they've got to have a look at where they're going to play," West Coast chief executive Trevor Nisbett said on Monday.

"We rate him very highly. He's a good, hard player.

"Hopefully we will retain him. If we don't, we'll have to look at a trade for him."
They rate him highly...But only happened to play the four games..
I'd rather us target some outside players, it's pace with excellent skill we require..

If we can unearth a Dangerfield or a Cotchin with pick 12 & a talented tall with another pick/ & or trade & then fill the gaps with two or three of the following Rivers, Martin, Pears, Giles, Chaplin, Warnock, Lee, Hartigan, Haretuku etc..

Add that with the current crop of youth coming through, the Saints won't need to bottom out..!!

Stevens doesn't excite me at all, Ledger looks way way waaaaaaay better

I agree that we need to get lucky with the draft and trade well to fill gaps. I don't think we'll contend next year and honestly I don't want us to push for the flag if it comes at the expense of developing young players. If we can hover around the middle for a few years while rebuilding like Sydney then we can push for the top 4 in 3 or 4 years.

We need to kill a draft like Sydney did in 2009 so that our time down the ladder is as little as possible. Look at the success rate Sydney had.

Trades
Mark Seaby (ruck depth)
Shane Mumford (great number 1 ruck)
Ben McGlynn (tagger/small forward)
Josh Kennedy (now an elite midfielder)
All for a packet of chips

Draft
Gary Rohan at 6
Lewis Jetta at 14
Sam Reid at 38
Trent Dennis Lane at 55

Their time at the top of the ladder only resulted in one year of large decline.

GF in 2005 (2009 for us)
GF in 2006 (2010 for us)
7th in 2007 (2011 for us)
6th in 2008 (generously 2012 for us)
They then slid down for one year, finishing 12th in 2009, with their list management instantly propelling them back up the ladder
5th in 2010
6th in 2011
3rd in 2012

I honestly think that St Kilda might be better off without Goddard. Our compensation pick for Hickey/Toy and Caddy might be a done deal. Both are very promising players. For those Caddy doubters, he averaged 25 touches (11 contested) and 7 clearances a game in the Under 18 Championships. With another couple of pre-seaons under his belt, he can develop into a very nice player. Hickey would fill the back-up ruckman role very well, he has clean hands, good agility and endurance. Toy is a terrific kick and was once considered one of the top teenage talents. Gold Coast might see this deal as unfair, but they have to cut players from their list.

with so many small/medium backman (Gram, Raph, Dempster, Geary, Newnes, Cripps, Dunell, Andreoli(rookie), Winmar and possibly Siposs) I think we should be trading Gram and Raph while they still have value and trying to trade Winmar?

11 small/medium backs is way too many backs and you could add the likes of Gwilt/Gilbert even Goddard to the list. So we really need to get rid of at least 2 of them!!
Gram - mid/HB
Raph - genuine Flanker
Cripps - genuine Flanker
Dunell - genuine Flanker
Dempster - pocket / HB
Geary - pocket / HB
Winmar - genuine Flanker
Siposs - genuine Flanker

Gwilt & Gilbert whilst also of the flanker variant in that they dash and carry loosely, play KP a vast majority of the time, of those not listed, Newnes & Andreoli haven't had as much or any real exposure to have a preferred position in the AFL as VFL positions rarely translate during affiliate programs.

Raph is pushing vet status (recruited #8, 2003), currency would be minimal to non existent at any other club, tops the list of those who "may be shown the door".
Gram has been playing more negating roles recently than the past couple years where he'd play injured shirk contact and be a front runner, his position is somewhat under pressure by the Newnes variant who plays the flank a bit "looser" than a defender does and doesn't get lost in the midfield with a decent kick. So depending on expected "growth" could find himself limited but similarly would have probably mediocre to minimum currency.
Andreoli is untested and a rookie, and as the rookie list is going to shrink anyway this would solve nothing really.
Siposs, Dunell, Cripps are bottom aged, 1st choice depth / 19-22 options, Geary & Dempster entrenched in the back six as 1st choice defenders, Winmar is the outlier however he has a 3 year contract recently signed that would need to be taken into consideration.

What I'm largely getting at is, in the viewpoint of "there's too many" we're relatively stuck without "attachments" being a sticking point of those you listed, a far more realistic alternative is that we'll revolve around minimal with incoming retirements over the next 3 seasons, which is largely why, I believe we'll retain 1st draft picks or work to better them over that period. Likewise, we, in all probability, will not engage Free Agency for this purpose, as you'd effectively be weighing up similarly aged & skilled brackets vs draft compensation and in most situations you'll find yourself going the draft option to butter up possible trades.

What do you mean by "might be a done deal"?

Much rather Hickey than Toy. Other than the obvious need, was extremely underwhelmed with what I saw of Toy this year. He may have a great kick, but he appeared to have the awareness of a young Raph Clarke.

Do agree that Gold Coast are ripe for the pickings. Between list shrinkage, mandatory draftee slots and adding O'Meara they've got to clear at least seven spots.

I would also prefer Hickey, but Gold Coast might be a bet reluctant to give him up. Undoubtedly Gold Coast will be active on the trade table.

I think any trades we make will need to be for the key position players who are missing from our list.
We have good midfielders coming along, and this type of player is generally more available ( both in trade and in the draft ).
If BJ goes we should put some cash aside and make a play for a suitable free agent or trade next year.

C42YoDoor has us keen on Maverick Weller from GC.

Originally from Tasmania. From what i can gather he's a tough as nails, with a deadly foot, so I'm not sure why they'd let him go?

Strike while the iron is hot..
We have a deep draft this year that is universally recognized, some proven talent availible & the best bargaining chip of all..one of our top five players wanting out..(BJ)

In an ideal world I'd give pick 12 to the Suns & Sammy Gilbert for Caddy & Lynch (Is going to be a gun..!!)
to kick start our trading..

Then we can turn our attention to an experienced KP Defender such as a Rivers, Gilham & also a younger type like Hartigan or similiar..for development & depth..

Well in an ideal world we trade pick 50 to Hawthorn for Buddy :p
What's wrong with being aggressive with our recruiting for a change..

How good was that last day of trading all those years back when we snapped up Hamill & the G Train in the last few minutes of trading..

I'm fed up on being raided through our history, all year i heard how great our depth was..

We finished ninth..

Is he left footed?

In all seriousness I don't know, I haven't seen him at all. Might be worth heading over to the Suns board to get more of an idea?

Starting to think Carlton might be in the running for Caddy. They could use an inside midfielder especially with Judd getting on a bit and if Caddy is all he's cracked up to be it might be too hard for them to refuse. If nothing else he'll replace Brock McLean which can only be a good thing.

Yeah I've seen a bit but for instance in the game against us there was a reason why he was left free so much. Every time he kicked the ball he butchered it apart from one goal 15m out right in front. I don't expect him to be in their best 22 next year.

There's talk around that Caddy nominated Collingwood. According to Gerard Wheatley anyway.
As if you'd want to go there with that midfield, and as if you'd want to trade for him with that midfield!

Anyway i don't think he'd be down to head our way, with his parents being from the Northern suburbs and all, from Seaford it's a long way.
