I think to trade for a midfielder would be silly. We have Hayes, Dal Santo, Montagna, Steven, Armitage, Ledger, Ross, Ray and others who will all be at the club next year.

Trades should fill positions of need. Our needs are for a mature tall defender, and that's pretty much all. We don't actually need another mature #1 ruckman, and back-ups should be found late in the draft. We don't need another ruck/forward either, as we have Stanley and Kosi, and Wilkes is also being used in that function as well and hopefully will improve in that area.

From what I've heard from you guys shepherd seems the go to man. What draft pick do we expect him to be taken at?

With the new vets list deal coming in next year, will it allow us to have more players on our list? say does volt and kozi /others count towards the total number of players allowed on the list?
Shepheard is a backup option, rather than being a best 22 full-back.

But he pinch hits well in the ruck - got a really good leap as well as height. Plenty of aggression, although he has been injured a few times this year.

His kicking worried me a bit towards the end of the season, and he was dodgy in front of the sticks (1.5 is pretty indicative, as he had some very gettable shots).

Rookie option (not sure we'll have the room?).

Veterans don't give you any extra players on the list (in total). The rule has been that you can have up to two extra players on the main list (with 2 veterans), but this comes at the expense of a smaller rookie list.

Not that I've been following closely, but every time I've seem him lately he's been up forward?
Carlton were pretty much in the situation we are in now, a decade ago. Thorton did a good job but now they have better options.
I'm not sure he's a forward, which may be why he's cutting and running.

Very weak segway , but John Barker, their forward coach is one of the few assistant coaches at Carlton not to get the heave ho. Must have the gift of the gab.
Its interesting to note the way clubs improve after Barker.... leaves

No. I think we are going great bringing our own midfielders through and he'd probably want big $$. Couldn't we have had him in the Luke Ball trade?
Sharrod would only accept going to North because of the Brad Scott/Collingwood connection, he never wanted to come here, and hence was never offered (to us anyway). He's 24, which would help fill that gap enormously. And it's not like he's shit or anything. I would definitely explore it, but yeah I don't think we have anything to trade.

Rumour on the Essendon board that we might be very keen on David Myers, who a recent article in the Australian, I think it might have been (otherwise the Age), suggested is having difficulty coming to terms with Essendon.

Knowing how much Pelchan likes his "lefties", with beautiful and long kicks, this could be true. He was originally played across HB at Essendon, but apparently performed about 200x better once moved into the guts, where pretty much everyone on the Essendon board seems to reckon he was outstanding.

Originally taken at no.6 in the National Draft but has had injury concerns ever since.

I never take too much out of someone on a message board saying we're interested in someone. If he can't get on the park why would we want him? I'm guessing only cause they want to trade him. Surely we learnt our lesson with Jesse Smith.

So have I got this right?
If we lose Goddard to free agency, we dont want to take anyone else by free agency , even "delisted free agents" ( however that works, I thought they always were free ), because we will lose or downgrade our compensation.
But we are able to trade without losing it.
As far as I can work out the free agent moves dont have to be announced until near the end of the trade period, which seems stupid, because the compensation picks could be important for trades, and may mean that a heap of trades cant be finalised until the last week of the trade period , which they extended to avoid it being cramped into one week.

Idiots!

Would be more than happy to get Myers on for the right price. Stick him in the guts and watch him go.

Anyone who has any questions about him - go and watch the second half of the Dons v Swans game at Etihad around the middle of the season. The game where the Dons came from 50 odd points down to nearly snatch it.

Myers came on as the sub at half time and played in the guts for about 20 touches and a goal. Big body, knows where the sticks are and hits like a truck :thumbsu:

Why is he playing as a sub. If they desperately want BJ, would Myers have been someone good to play while they didn't have him?
Who goes out of our 22? Sippo? Newnes? Do we not play the youth any more?

Myers is a decent outside runner with good skills. I wouldn't mind picking him up with a player trade but I wouldn't be interested in giving up a first or second round pick on him.

According to what I've read both today and one other time recently, on the Essendon board, he has done by far his best work at Essendon inside/in the guts. Apparently he was a bit of a revelation when moved in there. (Like the difference between Beau Wilkes playing forward and Beau Wilkes playing back.)

I imagine if we are looking at him, we are doing so in the hopes he will fill Lenny's shoes, once he hangs them up.

My query, like some others though, if this is true, is why would Essendon, who are crying out for those that can play in the guts (hence going after Moloney and Caddy), not be offering him a better contract, if he is so good in there, unless they have serious injury concerns with him, a la Gumbleton?

Obviously they are trying to free up some space in the cap to be able to fit Goddard, Moloney and maybe Caddy in, but I would have thought it would be silly to lose someone who actually plays well in the guts, in order to get others who also play well there (unless injuries are a major concern).

Talent wise, I would be more than happy to have him, as he has a lethal and raking left foot and big body for on ball (especially if he was as effective on ball as they say he was), but the big query has to be on his body. If that is sound, then he could be very, very well worth getting.

Agree, not sold on his speed but only saw him but twice this year. Maybe Cockie would come much cheaper and be 80 % as good.
FYI - Jesse white from Swans will be delisted this year- thoughts on using our final pick -like pick 98- on him if he is available and getting max to teach him how to play FB a la Tarrant, 197 cm and 107kg, and can jump - can't kick tho, just putting it out there....

Pretty much sums it up. Probably injury concerns lingering and they've offered him a short term contract. Also to free up salary cap space.

The Bombers posters reckon we have offered our second round pick (33) and a player, they are hoping for Jack Steven or Tom Ledger!
