How would they work out compensation for Monfries? Top 10 bnf in 2010, leading goal kicker, former 1st round pick, could we milk a first rounder? And do they let you know what you will recover prior to the end of the free agency period?

A 4 year deal for Goddard on big money is a horrible, horrible risk.

Why can nobody see that he’s barely played a good game in 2 years?

Yes his 2010 GF was brilliant... he hasn’t gone anywhere near that form since.

There is no ******* way on earth he is worth $700k a year... and he’ll be 28 next year.

If this comes off, I predict a whole lot of fapping at the “big fish”... followed by disappointing form... then tears and heartbreak in 2 years when we have guns coming off contract.

There’s a reason St Kilda is only offering 3 years and $600k... he’s absolutely worth no more, and imo a bit less. No way I’d go past $500k for this bloke. People talk like he’s a league top 10 player. He’s not even top 30.

Christ I hope we don’t get him... not worth the price, not by a long shot.
He's aveaged 24 touches per game over the past 2 years, and only had less than 20 touches twice this year.

I think I agreed but you have to consider the value of the type of player Goddard is to our side in addition to the tailing off of his form paralleling with St Kilda's.

Given that the counter attacking half back is a genuine point of weakness (and the high likelihood that neither Myers nor Heppel will not be part of the solution due to our need to get them in the middle) Goddard the player would be a near perfect fit for the side. Goddard the freak show of 2010 (when he probably finished the year as the best player in the competition) would be such a perfect fit for the side that he could single-handedly improve us a spot or two on the ladder.

He could also be part of the immediate succession plan for Fletcher. He is about as cool, and easily as good a kick and decision maker as the great man and would allow us to focus our young KPDs on on beating their men with some additional help post Fletch while still providing the needed elder statesman.

On form Goddard is probably not worth $700,000 a year but on his overall value to us in the next four years he is probably worth every bit and more.

What are we crying out for?

PEOPLE who can deliver the pill.

Goddard is a beautiful kick of the footy.

I actually think we have KPP sorted, need one developing ruck, need one more B+-A grade mid, and someone to hit a target coming out of defensive half.

That's where we fell away, we stopped getting the ball forward!

Shopping list should be:
Goddard
Young
Caddy
Maloney

If want frees is out, with slatts that frees up plenty of cash. Mcviegh and possibly hille too.

Use compo pick to get caddy (monfries compo)
Free agency for the rest.

Plenty of cash left, and some low jumper numbers around too.

1.
2.
6.
9. (possibly)
10.
13.
14. ( Possibly)
19. (possibly)
20.

Good numbers for good recruits, players love that sort of thing.

Three experienced players that will harden us up.

Gysberts could be an option too, however, I'm not sold.

Watters even admitted attributing to Goddards poor form this year. He tried to not let him just be the +1 in defence to get the cheap balls across half back and distribute, He was trying to round him off as a player and get in to do some clearance work, and some other roles. I cant find the link right now but it was printed....

If allowed to play that role he is fine as a player!

I'd be pretty happy if we landed Goddard. Players of his ilk do not just come around every day. If he has four years in him, it should coincide with out tilt at glory.

I'm going cold on Caddy, maybe after all the BF bullshit. Maybe a bandaid approach with Maloney, while we work on Zaha, Heppell, Myers, Kavanagh and Melksham.

Oh and just for people's info, we only get compensation for Monfries if we pick up no one in free agency. And even then it will be a rubbish pick determined by the AFL cheats.

The lack of contested ball shouldn't be considered an issue. Why would any coach waste a player of Goddard's talents inside packs when he can literally build a wall at half back and break a press/flood on his own.

Form is temporary, class is permanent. Goddard at his best is one of the best players in the competition. And even when he's not at his best, he's still one of the best field kicks in the competition - something we desperately need. It would allow Heppell to make his permanent move to the midfield and take the pressure off guys like Hardingham, who couldn't pull off an effective rebound 50 to save his life. He can play back, midfield or up forward. He's the class player we so desperately need. It's not often that an A-grade player is up for grabs; I'd be extremely disappointed if we didn't go hard at Goddard.

Actually, they do. Take out his 2010 season, and you have a good player. That’s it. People get so carried away with this bloke. I think it’s the grand final, and more specifically, the mark.

I’m not disagreeing with others that say we could use him and he has good points... certainly he’d slot straight into our team nicely. But getting that bloke on a 4 year deal at ~$700k would be the height of terrible business.

He ain’t a superstar... people need to update their thoughts. He’s extremely overrated.

In any case, I don’t think he’s going anywhere. Every time he’s been asked, he’s said he wants to stay a one club player at St Kilda. They’re just playing the negotiation game, I don’t expect him to go anywhere for one extra year on a contract.

I realise many people disagree with me... but imo this guy has done absolutely nothing in two years. He’s not a superstar. He’s not an A-grader. He’s not even in St Kilda’s top 5 players. At that money it would be a terrible move. His best was obviously very good, but we’ve seen it for probably 2 out of his 9 seasons, and not for a long time now. I’d take him... at about $500k.

The club needs to weigh up if that 700k a year can be better spent the following year if something else is available.

Also how many A graders do Essendon fans percieve we have and compared to clubs like Sydney, West coast do we have any less.

i raised an eyebrow when i read the article also, but he just said he should be better than a one dimensional player...

here was a bit of the quote;

One of the things we’ve really tried to challenge Brendon (Goddard) with is not to be a player that wins the ball across half back, and play that sweeping role, I think over three or four years a lot of players these days have the plus one role, that players sweep into, we want to get him out of that” “He’s played wing, he’s played as a defender, he’s played as a high forward and he’s played as an inside mid because I want to challenge him to win contested ball and balance his game out.

in effect i took this as Goddards medicore year could be attributed to Watters playing him all over the shop instead of in preferred position. The 11th in the b&f could be a false reading.

I would be happy to have Goddard at the club. Having said that I would not cry at missing out on him either. He is a very good player, the kind of player we need, however I would not want it to cost too much, which it likely would unless for some reason he really wanted to play for Essendon, which I doubt.

this was in The Age this time last year......

Essendon

Trade potential: David Hille, Scott Gumbleton, Kyle Reimers, Alwyn Davey.
Draft picks to offer: 19, 38, 56, 74, 92.
In the market for: Speedy midfielder who can carry the ball and a quick small defender.
What we think: List is on the rise, but Jobe Watson needs more help in the middle. Extra pace to surround the skipper would be ideal.

Don't recall seeing him, is it safe to say he's another Hardwick special (see: Nason, Roberts, Houli etc)?
Played a couple of pre-season games and 1 regular season game I think. His disposal was beyond pathetic. He could find the ball alright, but the term "DreamTeam specialist" comes to mind. He had some promise when he was first drafted too.
