Good call.

Have previously posted that if we are challenging for the flag that Howlett will be the 22nd or 23rd player.

To a point I actually agree, if we are to win a flag, players like Howlett should be depth.

Assuming a time period of 3 years.

Eagles premier has summed it up - Hooker is a no 2 key defender as I have argued since the end of the year - Happy to go with Carlisle as our number 1 defender and back up from Fletcher.

No point getting Stevens to sweeten a deal.

This is crap IMO. Howlett is our second best midfielder behind Jobe, and if he improves at the same level he did this year, the guy could become our joel corey. Unfashionable, but just gets the job done every week. Nice skill set, probably the most defensively minded out of our midfield group, and coming from his background - he plays every game like it is his last. Howlett is fast becoming an extremely important player in our side, and is grossly underrated. It shits me really.

No way is Howlett our second best midfielder. We have 4-5 id pick before him right now. However i also disagree that he needs to be our 22nd or 23rd best player to win a flag - what nonsense. No grandfinal side is full of stars. Mitch Morton was in the 20 for Syndey this year, Bird ect. Hes still young and it really depends on how he continues to develop not massive upside in his game although either did Sewell, i see them as similar types obviousily he isnt anywhere near as good yet and may never be.

Maybe not best talent wise, but reliability and consistency wise he most definitely is. I like the Sewell comparison.

Would love Ben Jacobs. Rated him the 4th best player in the draft and love the moevement to classy half backs who can use the footy well (hes yet to do that at AFL level but his kick was considered elite as a junior so more his decision making is a problem which will improve as he gains more experience) - we potentially could be building a similar list to hawthorn with the left footers and skillful users. For me id be pretty happy to give up pick 20 for Jacobs considering he wants home.

Pick 20 is way overs. The kid is in the Josh Toy category for me, in that he was a star junior but his game is not as well suited to the intensity of the AFL. He relies too much on time and space to get the best use out of his skills, and when under pressure his decision making is poor. I think he could definitely become a better player in time, but I think we could actually get a better player in this draft up to about pick 30.

Having said that, if Port wanted pick 48 back, I'd be happy to give it to them. Think he will fetch something in the 30's honestly. Maybe 34 from St Kilda would get it done.

I think you under rate him, however Port certainly dont want him walking. Id be more than happy to give up pick 32. Its a harsh call to say after just 2 years playing for the second worst team over this time down back that his game isnt suited to AFL level.

I think pick 15-25 is his worth

Agree with your summary- But realistically if you rate Howlett currently the 4th or 5th best midfielder - You would expect that one or two would go past him in 3 years, which then pushes him towards the bottom of our 22. And Howlett is average in a defensive sense - outside of his tackling.

Id say Watson and Stanton are clearly ahead of him already. We have now added Goddard who is also ahead of him easily. Id also say Zaka is well ahead of him. Heppell through natural development will go past Howlett if he continues as a midfielder which at least one of BJ or Heppell will, if not both.

Would you argue against any of those 4-5?

We agree Watson/Stanton/Goddard/Zaharakis make him no 5 - Heppell goes past in 2 years - Howlett is no 6 - Get a Kavanagh/Davis up and running and Howlett drops back further - Which is a great sign - So then he is getting closer to the back-end of the top 22.

Yes, I am sure you have heard the term- ROTATIONS, we need more class in the middle, Heppell was drafted as a mid, Goddard was recruited as one. The one you have left off is Browne though. There is enough room in the midfield for Hepp and BJ.
clearly i have as i said occasionally rotating through the middle...actually read before commenting thanks.

Myers, Hocking and Melksham will drop out of the side before Howlett does.

Naah because in the premiership scenario Myers and Melksham, at least, get something close to the best out of themselves. If they do that they push very close to our top handful of players.

If James Kelly and Ling can considered good enough to be integral parts of a premiership side so can Howlett and Hocking.

If we were legitimately interested in Toy, heart block isn't the end all for his career. It is simply a malfunction of the heart (for those who were wondering about the specificities of the condition) the heart beat is regulated and stimulated by electrical activity in a number of 'nodes', in heart block sufferers, the electrical message is slow to get through or doesn't transfer properly through the nodes so the heart doesn't reach the desired number of beats per minute. Therefore the individual cannot perform properly. This problem is solved by a pacemaker - and for those who are wondering, pacemakers can be set to comply to any maximum heart rate desired by the patient - so he would effectively be able to train and develop his cardiovascular fitness to full capacity. The only issue is that pacemakers can, I emphasize can because it may never happen - be damaged by very heavy contact. So its a bit of a risk if you think about it that way. However, if you consider the reaction this will cause in relation to his value, he could be acquired very cheaply. And if he were to develop to be an outstanding player it would be a great outcome. Something to think about.

Do you know of anyone is playing professional sport with a big endurance focus that has a pacemaker? Honest question, not a smart ass one.

The whole thing certainly makes it a big risk and imo it is one I don't want to take and would need some serious convincing otherwise. Identifying someone in this situation that has come good would go a long way towards convincing me he could be worth the risk assuming he comes cheaply.

The difference is Goddard has had an elite season or 5....Sylivia has had a purple patch month, that is it. He is not that good. Just no thanks, would rather target good players.

Bastard has sucked me in on more than one occasion with Supercoach. Beauty, this time Sylvia will continue like he has the last fortnight. Alas, trade wasted.

If they burn me in SuperCoach I most defintely do not want. Too much baggage (for me).

If we ever become good enough where Howlett becomes depth we'll end up being some super mega elite version of the 07 - 11 Geelong teams. Sorry, but you're a huge ******* moron if you think he couldn't be a part (and an important part) of a premiership team.
So much this.... he is the ultimate team player. Will always put the team before himself and does all the little things that many supporters don't take notice of.
