Ok, I've updated the ledger.

With Dawes we are now at -1 senior spots available meaning that we officially need to move on 3 more players to cover the deficit and minimum 2 live draft picks. Then we will need to boot some more if we want to upgrade any rookies and if we bring in Pedersen or anyone else.

If Rivers goes under FA it will be even ledger then some trades or delistings to follow but at the moment the future toll stands at 3+
Jetta, Bennell first out the door.

I'm gonna hunt down and give a stern talking to the first list manager/recruiter that delisted a player only to pick them up again as a rookie. It's the ultimate in fence-sitting. You either think the guys going to be good, keep him on the main list and make him earn it, or you think he's not up to scratch and you say thanks and farewell.
People are screaming out for Neeld to be ruthless, yet want to see him second guess delistment decisions by rookie drafting those guys. You can't have it both ways

Not surprisingly it was us (Newton/Meesen).

I'd get rid of Bennell full stop, but maybe they want to see if he can recover and play decent football. Why waste a spot on the senior list on a coin toss like that? Especially when we're bringing in a bunch of players. It's one thing to do it in the era of Bailey and Co hoarding 50 million draft picks, but with free agents and compensation picks we're going to have to axe more players - and there is a time to fence sit rather than outright sack somebody just to clear a spot and then fill the rookie spot they might have had with an even more speculative kid.

That's the only reason they should do it, that being in the Bennell case specifically if they want to give him some time to recover from the knee injury he had in August. They might still think he has something to offer (unlikely) but you wouldn't want to waste a Senior List spot on a 50/50 like that for a bloke who won't even play until May/June at the earliest. Also, from a more personal angle, it's pretty bloody harsh to say "look mate, sorry about your knee but you're on your own for the rest of your rehab. Best of luck champ."

They would obviously offer to continue assisting him, whether he accepts it or goes home is the other issue.

Tough game, this, but Bennell has no role.

Thought I'd give this a go. I understand Hogan but this is for 2013.

MELBOURNE is set to part ways with rookie key forward Jai Sheahan.

The 195cm goalkicker has been told his contract at Melbourne will not be renewed next season, after spending his first year on the Dees list in the VFL.
From Geelong Falcons, Sheahan, 19, is determined to continue his AFL career elsewhere next season.
The Dees are also expected to farewell second-year key forward Lucas Cook, who the club took with a first-round draft pick in 2010.

The pair have been squeezed out as the Dees embark on a major list turnover.Melbourne has bolstered its key forward stocks, having recruited premiership big man Chris Dawes, from Collingwood, and star 17-year-old Jesse Hogan.

Surprising move there but if we're going for Pederson too then I guess Neeld really doesn't rate our recent key forwards. Watts is now a defender, Cook is nothing, and Sheahan is gone.

Strange that he wouldn't leave him on the rookie list? I don't watch a huge amount of Casey, so I'll trust him.

I think 3 rookies have to go every year (whether it be elevated to senior list or delisted) so whilst it has some shock factor someone had to go.

btw I'm moving these posts to the list discussion thread.

Evans demoted, Mags and Nicho promoted.

Sorry if I am unwelcome here, but I listened to Terry Wallace's list analysis on trade radio today of Melbourne and it prompted me to go and look at the playing list. It is very hard for an opposition supporter to find more than one or two household names when it comes to Melbourne's midfield. I am shocked that the club hasn't looked to trade in some midfielders. The key position players at either end look in good shape, but the midfield is probably the worst midfield I have ever seen on paper (don't actually get to watch many Melbourne games). Do you think Stefan Martin could be used as bait to trade in one or two midfielders?

Jones, Trengove, Grimes, Sylvia are all household names, but its a bit thin after that.

I agree with you. Our midfield is the worst in the comp in my opinion and I think we're a bit top heavy. Wouldn't surprise me if we offloaded Martin for a mid

Sylvia is more naturally a forward and Grimes more naturally a back. Moloney was definitely a household name. The Melbourne list reminds me of Hawthorn in the late 90's. We had excellent talls at either end but were thin in the middle and it stopped us from going further than we did in the early 2000's.

Grimey came second in the B&F on the back of a season in midfield so no worries there.

At the moment; this is us.

C: Grimes-McKenzie-Sylvia
R: Jamar-Jones-Trengove
I: Viney

Not the worst going around, should Trenners decide to explode.
