Listening to the weekly Misson injury update, says Evans is out for the rest of the year because his back was a bit stiffness... then goes on to say "like Stefan Martin, we really want him to be able to attack the off season so we're gonna finish him up". Makes me think he'll be getting a third year?

That's actually very surprising to hear, given the state of our rookies.

At the moment, there's:

Daniel Nicholson (keep, likely promotion)
Tom Couch (keep)
James Magner (keep)
Leigh Williams (has performed well)
Jai Sheahan (has performed well)
Kelvin Lawrence (goneski)

And then there's Michael Evans as well.

I wouldn't have thought that there would be room for him, to be honest...

Gotta cut the list deep this year.. Not talking about all senior players, but some of the underperforming youngsters too.

My suggestions:
Garland (Trade), Bate (Delist), Bennell (Delist), Petterd (Trade), Jetta (Delist), Morton (Trade), Spencer (Trade), Davey (Delist).

I know there is a few guys, like spencer and jetta who have had a few reasonable games, but we need to remove the 'bit players' who are never going to make the grade.

Richmond cut the list deep when Hardwick first started and their list looks superior to ours!!

My Take on the off season dealings

Bennell – Delist. Pity about his knee but if it were between him and Jetta I would choose Jetta. He is harder at the contest and also works very hard.

Davis – Not sure if out of contract. We already have a number of key defenders and Sheahan looks good to.

Bate – Free agency.

Moloney – Free agency. I would like to keep him. He is a good player and we lack experience. Looks as though he will go.

Green – Retired

Joel Mac – Possible delisting/trade. He has actually been pretty good this year. Others such as Strauss/Nicholson may get a look in before him.

Jurrah – I would like to keep him however, he may decide that he is not going to go on. Possibly retirement/delisting.

Bartram – If his knee comes up from the treatment, he will stay on. If not he will be forced to retire.

Magner – Will get another rookie year.

Nicholson – Promotion to senior list.

Pettard – Trade bait. Looks like he is out of favour.

Couch – May get another rookie year or delist. We will have Viney and Gysberts next year for him to compete with.

Evans – Another rookie year.

Lawrence – Gone already.

Sheahan – Another rookie year.

Williams – Possibly another rookie year.

Dunn – Should get another contract. Play him up forward though.

Davey – I think he has another year to run on contract. Otherwise, I would say delist.

Sellar – Has been serviceable this year and I would think it would have been pointless to draft him for one year so he gets another contract.

Spencer – Has shown improvement and I think they will persist. It does take time for rucks to develop.
Morton – Trade. Looks like he is just about cooked at Melbourne.

We may consider trading a tall back such as Garland/Rivers. I’m not suggesting we do but we seem to have an abundance of tall backs.
In saying all that I think Neeld will be ruthless and we may see a couple surprise delistings/trades so he can get the right people in. The right people being experienced players prepared to work hard.

I'm not liking how quickly people have jumped off Moloney. He's had a poor year but he's still a very talented player. If he chooses to go, then we may not be able to stop him, but let's not dismiss him as someone of no use.

I agree. As per my post he is a required player. I just think he may leave.

My take on delistings/list management:
From those out of contract (Bartram, Bate, Bennell, Dunn, Petterd, Strauss, Jurrah, Rivers, MacDonald, Moloney, Sellar, Spencer, Bail, Davis, Green), I would delist Bartram, Bate, Bennell, Jurrah (re-rookie him - taking Lawrence's spot), MacDonald, Davis/Sellar (tough on 1 of these guys but need 1 more player to leave to activate extra pick in draft-personally I'd let go of Sellar as I don't see him having a role once we become a good side.......If we end up getting Cloke I'd let go of both of them), Green. I would then look at trading Moloney and Morton but keeping them if trades can't be found.
This leaves us to be able to use pick 3, 4, 13, 22 (hopefully Viney), 40, 58, Nicholson (elevating to senior list).
From this I'd look at trying to get the following deals done:
1) Caddy for Moloney and Pick 13.
2) Boak/Pick 1 in mini-draft for Pick 4.
3) Toy for Pick 58.
4) Cloke through free agency.
5) Lucas for Morton.
SO overall:
Out: Bartram, Bate, Bennell, Jurrah, MacDonald, Sellar, Green, Moloney (only if we can get Caddy), Morton, Lawrence (rookie)
In: Caddy (or pick 13), Pick 3, Boak/pick 1 mini draft (or pick 4), pick 22 (Viney), pick 40, Toy (pick 58), Jurrah (rookie), Nicholson (elevated to senior list).

My main issue with Moloney is that he seems to have really struggled mentally. I don't want players around the club that aren't prepared to put in the hard yards - it seems like since being booted from the LG he's taken his bat and ball and gone home.

Of course, mental lapses can be fixed, just as lapses in form can. I think the off-season will be a good time for Moloney to get his thoughts together and really decide whether he wants to play for the MFC or not. Happy to have him if he does, but if he's going to just go through the motions without putting in the effort then I don't care where he goes, no matter how much talent or potential he has.

In fact, that goes for anybody on the playing list, not just Beamer.

Morton will probably hold some trade value (somewhere in the 3rd-4th round), Davey maybe similar and the rest are done once cut from Melbourne.

Where is Sylvia in all this ? Is his heart at Melb ? is he tradeable ? What would Melb want for him ?

As far as Sylvia goes I just had a look over his stats for the year, 8 of his last 10 games haven't been too bad. He has managed to kick at least a goal in all but 5 games that he has played this year and against Adelaide he showed just how well he can play footy. - An injury free pre season and a few more good mid's around him to work with, and I think he could be pretty valuable to us next year. Of course all this is determined by his attitude and his willingness to be at Melbourne Football Club and play for the jumper!

I've been pretty bloody happy wit Syl this yr to be honest.. his slow start to the year was due to his back injury and in the second half of the year would be best behind only Jones I rekon.. is the one player who we have with genuine class and it showed yesterday how quality he is for he was really carrying our midfield..

Sylvia's played some decent games lately, but haven't we seen this before?
Not saying we get rid of him this offseason, but if he gets a full preseason (which I'm not sure he's ever really had), stays on the park for most of the year and dishes up more, 30 touches one week, 5 the next I'd seriously think of trading him next year. Frustrates the shit out of me; I don't doubt his talent, but his application and consistency is a worry.

Sylvia cannot go...... not an option... we have no senior players and on his day this guy is unstoppable!!!

Since his smiling incident after the Sydney debacle, Syl has put his head down and arse up, thats all i can ask for, easily one of top two players during the 2nd half of the year. Keep and play midfield next year. He provides grunt.
agree completely and think a large part of the problem is that they tend to hang him at half forward for large parts of games when he is clearly a jet in the midfield.. needs a full preseason so we can see him at full flight more often.. is the type of player that is perfect for Neelds game plan

Injury riddled Melbourne players who are potentially in our best 22
Mitch Clark- Foot injury, half way point of the season, we'd have won more games with him in the 2nd half of the year, no doubt
Liam Jurrah- Yet to have a year without a prolonged injury
Clint Batram- Ongoing knee injury, like Liam time will tell on his future.
Jordan Gysberts- Yet to have a full season without an extensive injury
Colin Sylvia- Yet to have a full pre season, this year hurt his back and had foot trouble during the pre season
Sam Blease- Broke his league in his first year, signifcatnly stalled development
Aaron Davey- Injuries in the last 3 years, fingers crossed can have a full pre season
Mark Jamar- I reckon he has battled with injury for the last 2 years, ridiculous workload in 10' and 11'
Jack Grimes- Nearly had an injury free pre season but hurt his shoulder, he will be a genuine gun
Stefan Martin- Injured his hip and has had previous injuries to his leg.
Cale Morton- Did his finger last year cost him 6 weeks, I think that was during pre season, didnt do any weights during that time, out for the season with a shoulder this year.
Jack Trengove (speculative)- reckon his got some groin issues, get it sorted out during the off season
Ricky Petterd- plenty of niggling injuries, but perhaps his had his chance
Jordie Mckenzie- a few niggles this year and including pre season
James Strauss- 5-6 games back from 12 months off with a broken leg
Luke Tapscott- Hip injury in 10' and a hamstring in 11' soo much Paul Chapman in this guy.

There are 16 blokes there who at their best are in our 22, there reason I say 'at their best' is because they have been interrupted with injuries which have stalled their year and development. Give 9 of these blokes a full pre season and I can guarantee next year that the club will improve dramatically. We have played some terrible footy, but it doesn't hellp when you don't have a strong list in the first place and yet you still manage to have half of it out due to injury.

Note, even in our last 2 years of drafting, Fitzpatrick, Gawn, Tynan and Taggert... none of these guys have been on the park much at all. Hopefully our luck with injuries can turn around soon.

What i'm trying to say is I don't think drastic changes need to be made, and if they do well their stiff because they havent had much form to go by. The likes of Bate will go, these blokes have had their chance, I just think we've been dogged by injuries to an already depleted list, deserves more attention than what has been warranted.

Mark Neeld on AFL insider:

No offer made to Cloke from the dees, "he will not be coming here", rates the 1st round of this draft highly, and it would have to be a very good deal for us to give away one of those top picks

Pleased to hear this.

My take on this: Brodie Grundy is a lock if he's there at 3, this will probably also mean adios Jake Spencer as well as get a move on Max Gawn because you've got 3 maybe 4 blokes in front of you!

From Herald Sun: "The Dees have 11 players out of contract: Liam Jurrah, Moloney, Jared Rivers, Ricky Petterd, Joel Macdonald, Lynden Dunn, Bate, Clint Bartram, James Sellar, Jamie Bennell and Troy Davis. Jordan Gysberts has a contract but is believed to be on Geelong's radar".

We could get rid of a lot of list cloggers there (see Bate, Bennell, MacDonald, Petterd). Too many of them go under the "potential" banner and do not have the basic skills to make it at the top level. Dunn's end to the year will probably save him. Bartram is brave but isn't going to get any better and his foot skills are worse than mine.

Jurrah's ability (another shocking word) is endless but he doesn't seem to want to make the sacrifices necessary to play league footy. I think he'll be shown the door.

I don't take the statement about Gysberts too seriously. In the same article they state that "The Demons have made no secret of their interest in Travis Cloke, who would provide a handy one-two punch with Mitch Clark up forward". Contradicts exactly what Neeld said and I'm not certain how big a fan of Cloke Neeld really is.

Curious as to where Jack Martin and others like him fit given we'd have to give a pick up for him.

Suppose Grundy goes at 3 then, a classy midfielder at 4 (hopefully Kennedy because he serves as a small forward too), another classy midfielder at 13, Viney as a second rounder F/S, then our third rounder as trade bait for someone who can't get a game that can play outside mid and can get the ball (Travis Colyer/Simon Hogan comes to mind), before using our last rounder to elevate Nicho.

At least, that's how I see it.
