So Rivers leaving is done and dusted?
Well I can't see him staying, surely if he wants to stay he would of signed up by now. Free Agency starts Monday.

A lot of Melbourne faithful are saying it's as good as done. He hasnt signed on yet for what reason?

I think he is gone.
I thought it was a ploy to test his value and potentially increase his contract price, but hearing that he's talked with Geelong doesn't really please me.

Do we have any idea that any other clubs would be interested in Davis/Fitzpatrick? Davis especially, has a shown a bit in the VFL, but hasn't managed to break into the 3rd worst side in the competition. I say we take the risk of re-drafting him as a rookie in order to get extra picks in the draft... If it is such a super draft, then we may well end up with a player far better...

If you add Gysberts, Rivers & Cale to that list, you are starting to talk about the kind of exodus that needs to happen.. The time for sentimentality is over, we need to make tough calls, and that includes on Cook..

None of Fitzpatrick, Davis, Gysberts, Cook or Morton will be delisted.

Or, at least, I'd be overwhelmingly surprised.

As far as I can tell Fitzy, Gysberts and Morton are under contract so they can't be delisted. Davis and Cook can if they club chooses to.

I didn't realise Fitzy had been given a 4th year already? And I understand Morton & gsy are contracted, but they are apparently both on the trade table and could find new homes...

Apparently they're required.

I wasnt sure about Royal either, but all the players, Jones and Grimes seemed to praise him for his midfield work post season?

Of course - 'we got smashed in about 18 games in the midfield this year but he did a great job'. That's how you seem to keep a job at MFC. Would be very disappointed if the players thought Royal was still the right man for the job.

Don't forget Royal's not out there playing. Nath had a cracker this year and he praises royal, Same goes with Grimsey, maybe it's more of a case of the other guys suffering from shrinkage?

Shrinkage?? Our midfield has been a limp noodle for a while now, with little signs of improvement. Plus the players arent really going to go public and say that he is doing a terrible job are they. Can anyone tell me who in our midfield is profoundly better since Royal came to the club?

well Jones improves Every year, Clearly Grimes improved simply due to not being injured, Jeordie was Fantastic this year, and Even though it was his first year with us, magner was certainly not a slouch.

Jones - most of his increased performance this year would come down to having a really good pre-season under Neeld. Correct. Improves every year.
Grimes- Correct, not injured but always has been a gun.
Jordie - is a tagger.
Magner - a gun at the start of the season and then was Royalised as season progressed. ;)

Trenners??? - no improvement (I dont buy that injured talk, because you wouldnt keep playing him if your not pushing for finals)
Sylvia - understandably had a injury riddled preseason this year, but what about previous years. No improvement.
Moloney??? - went backwards. (unhappy, whatever reason)

Morton - I rest my case.
Bate - see morton

I don't think you can put trenners down to Royal. First year with Captaincy at such a young age - I think that has had more impact on Trenners than Royal. As a whole, you could be right, but lack of buy in is the main reason IMO.

Moloney didn't buy in and couldn't do what Neeld wanted him to do, that coupled with the loss of leadership group, Moloney had a bad taste in his mouth.

Sylvia Has been a victim of Bailey. I think he'll pick up his game next season.

Sylvia's 2nd half of the season was probably his best footy yet....

Moloney was playing on HFF a fair bit this year
Morton trained with the backs IIRC
Bate played his first year in the midfield and simply isn't up to it

Magner moved to the fwd line away from Royal

I have NO IDEA if Royal is any good or not, none of us do

There are other factors.

I'll say this...if Neeld offers him another contract - I'll support him

If he doesn't - he wasn't the right man for the job

Factors that I would consider how well the midfield has performed considering thats where most possessions come from would be.

Clearances - Absolutely smashed all season in this area and finished dead last overall in the comp.
Inside 50's - 3rd last behind GC and GWS
Disposals - Second least behind GWS
Contested possessions - 16th
Uncontested possessions - Last

They are some telling statistics of how well the midfield performed this season.

Looking at that is so frustrating, in some aspects worse than a team who have barely played together....if Royal gets another contract he better pull his thumb out and get this midfield up to scratch.

Eth you're making a lot of big statements mate, are they your opinion or do you have some inside info? You sound very definitive haha.
IIRC Neeld said somewhere that Morton and Gysberts are required. Can't remember where. ;)

Fitzpatrick's obvious, though.

I'm in no way convinced Royal should stay or not, but its a bit harsh to blame him for all of this, we had a totally new game plan, a team with a shocking fitness base, and we had two of our physically strongest midfielders not buying into the new game plan for large parts of the year, Moloney and Sylvia. We also finished virtually bottom of the ladder, so no surprise most stats will be terrible.

It would seem the midfielders with the right attitudes made at some significant improvements this year though, Jones, Grimes, McKenzie and Howe. Magner started well, but got moved to a different role, presumably due to fitness issues. Trengove clearly struggled all year with fitness, and yes you would keep playing your injured captain, particularly when experience is vital to his development, if playing on would not cause further injury. Sylvia's attitude and form improved in the later parts of the season. Moloney is gone. Bate is probably gone.
