Strange that there has been no news on unrestricted free agents Bate and Dunn, no other clubs seem interested while we aren't rushing to sign them back up, I doubt we would want Bate back but I would if thought we would try to secure Dunn before he signs somewhere else.

I think we are in talks with Dunn at the moment, not sure of the source

Assuming Bate and Cook will get delisted and let's presume Rivers walks then what are we doing with the rest? I know they don't want to swing the axe too early when there's still trading to be done but surely Strauss at an absolute minimum, and Bartram if not completely crippled, will score a new contract without too much trouble.

I know nobody's going to throw a street party or buy three memberships if Joel Macdonald signs a one year extension but right now even hearing that The Spencil has put pen to paper would calm my Melbourne Supporter Depression Syndrome.

Personally I'd keep Bartram, Davis, Dunn, Jetta, Macdonald, Sellar, Spencer and Strauss but I understand they love Bail and Spencer so no doubt they're going to stay too.

Wouldn't be surprised if more dropped mind, because if we get Dawes that's only two (maybe three) players off the senior list (Moloney/Green/Rivers) and five on if Nicholson gets promoted (Viney, Nicholson, Dawes, +2 draft picks). If Bate and Cook levelled the scores at five apiece then signing Pedersen would mean another bullet.

I actually wouldn't care if he left - he's a role player, he'd probably be best 22 next year if he kept up his form but I see him as very replace-able.

In fact I'd almost view him as taking up a spot of a more talented young player.

Ok, I've updated the ledger.

With Dawes we are now at -1 senior spots available meaning that we officially need to move on 3 more players to cover the deficit and minimum 2 live draft picks. Then we will need to boot some more if we want to upgrade any rookies and if we bring in Pedersen or anyone else.

If Rivers goes under FA it will be even ledger then some trades or delistings to follow but at the moment the future toll stands at 3+

Viney, Nicholson upgrade and...... I don't think magner will get the nod but he might to solve an issue. Nicho had to wait another year as you think couch might too. We usually take a gamble with a project player. Might see that Happen.

I'd say Bate and Cook are dead certs. I suspect Petterd would be #3.

I suppose we have nothing to lose. I couldn't imagine him being too happy being delisted as an uncontracted player and wanting to come back to us but if there are no other takers then he shouldn't argue with any gig if we reclaim him as a rookie.

It will be interesting to see how active clubs are with snaring delisted players in the delisted FA window, which Bennell would be eligible for. I'm not sure if this can be used to put a player on the rookie list though so other clubs may not be interested and he still may get through to the drafts.

I'm gonna hunt down and give a stern talking to the first list manager/recruiter that delisted a player only to pick them up again as a rookie. It's the ultimate in fence-sitting. You either think the guys going to be good, keep him on the main list and make him earn it, or you think he's not up to scratch and you say thanks and farewell.
People are screaming out for Neeld to be ruthless, yet want to see him second guess delistment decisions by rookie drafting those guys. You can't have it both ways

I think your premise is sound, and my attitude now is basically, I don't care who's traded / delisted, as long as Neeld and Co. think its for the good of the list and club.

But I DO think the delist / re-rookie has some merit under certain circumstances.

Example (and this is purely hypothetical). If we were gaining momentum over a couple of seasons, heading towards finals / potential top 4 and Bennell does his knee, I think it's a good possibility to delist and re-rookie him.

Bennell strikes me as an "icing" type player, one who would potentially look better in a good side. A side where it isn't crucial for every player to rack up a lot of possessions.

His 12 - 15 possessions would be far more damaging in a better placed team IMO

Having said that, we're not in that position and if Neeld doesn't rate him, he should give him the flick

He can play, the kids got everything but a heart, but the problem is..
We have too many players without ticker and we cannot afford to carry anymore.

Morton, Cook, Jurrah, they can be as talented as they want, but without a heart,

Cheers. It just struck me as pretty early to throw in the towel on such a high pick given key forwards are always going to take a while. I remember there were plenty on our board saying Jack was no good in his first few years.
