Can't see Gumbleton going anywhere, myself. What would Freo's first pick be? May not be good enough if they make finals, considering all the compo picks being activated.

One page before this suggests players that might be going, either through trade or delisting. We won't be getting rid of 10-12 players. More like 8. 4 delistings we need to make + 4 of the compulsory additions we need to make.

Those certainly going to be delisted/retired/moved on from list:
Fraser
Krakouer
Moss

Those likely to be traded for picks:
Jolly
Toy
Nichols
Caddy(?)

Those unlikely to stay on the list and will either be traded or delisted.
Flanagan
Magin

I really rate Flanagan and Magin, but just cannot see them showing enough to stay on board. If we didn't have to cull the list, then they would be sticking around for sure. I can see other clubs picking them up.

I put a question mark over Caddy since it seems he's a bit more settled up here now. Not sure what's the go with him.

So with getting rid of 8 players, which we can do without removing Caddy, it leaves us room to get 2 players from the ND, throw in O'Meara and elevate the Horse to the senior list.

The names you have suggested are the likely suspects, but you can never be sure what will happen come trade week. Sometimes clubs will offer up quality players in order to fill a perceived hole in their own side. There could be someone in our senior side, who would be let go, if the right trade was offered. Taylor, Hutchins, Weller & Gillbee are others we might be prepared to trade, if another club made the right offer.

I haven't seen Flanagan in the 2nds, but what I've read about him suggests he has a touch of class, so might be worth keeping, if we have room. Of the others you have listed, Caddy is the only one I'd want us to fight to keep.

What happens with Caddy is the most important issue at the moment. If he goes, we should receive either quality players or picks in return & we'll need to target a Caddy-like player to replace him. It has a significant impact on our list.

I heard Chris Johnson at a Fitzroy function last week, where he thanked Scott Clayton for keeping him at Brisbane. Johnson had asked to be traded back to a Victorian club for family reasons & Clayton had agreed to do it, then reneged & Johnson then ended up being very happy to play in 3 Premierships & earn All Australian honours with the Lions. I wonder whether a similar scenario may play out with Caddy. I hope so.

I don't think Magin will ever make it at AFL level & I'm not sure Horsley will be upgraded. He might be, but is still borderline for me. Again, the scenario with Caddy may affect his chances.
 
We moved 12 players on last year , we are going to have to do similar this year , i got the feeling some tough decisions are going to be made , some players we really dont want to go might be moved on , tough decisions for Clayton.

Interested on your thoughts on Gilbee as he had a contract extension of 1 year until the end of 2013. So i automatically assumed he was a valued player at the Suns.

Obviously yet to play in 2012. Could he get a run against the Dees or the Giants. Attacks the ball and give good run and carry out of defence.

Hopefully he gets a run in the seniors.

Not sure how strongly we're considering it, but apparently we're in the box-seat to get Jack Martin if he nominates for the mini draft.

We're in a race with the Dogs, Cats and Dees to get him. If we offer our first round pick though (at this stage due to be pick #2), that would trump most other offers you would think. So GWS would get pick #1 and #2. We get Martin. We might also throw in a later pick to sweeten the deal.

This wouldn't be a bad course of action IMO. He's been compared to Harley Bennell with how he runs and carries, although is probably more of a rounded player with how he can get clearances too. If he was in the draft this year, he'd be top 3 from what I understand. Despite being a year younger.

Another WA boy too. Half our list are going to be Swans districts players at this rate!

It also gives us room to add some of the QLD Zone Selections to our list, since Martin technically would not join the list until 2014, when he can play.

Interesting article. His manger mentions the ' right environment ' a few times. I dont think he will nominate for the draft unless he is pretty certain he will go to his preferred club. I justy hope he rates the GC. If it was me, I sure as hell wouldnt want to nominate if I knew i was going to go play for the Demons or the Dogs. Much longer road to success there imo.

Without wanting to pick it apart too much, 'The right environment' could also mean support networks as well as personal development.

Since Martin is an indigenous player, finding a club with an established set of support to help him settle away from home may be a priority. Since we have Harley who was in a very similar situation, on top of Patrick, Harbrow and Hunt, GC might actually be better suited to the other clubs with that. We have players who have been through home-sick situations, and have come out the other side very settled on the Coast. They in turn could very much help mentor Martin through it. Not to mention the plethora of other WA boys in Matera, Swallow and O'Meara that he could travel back and forth with.

'The right environment' could also mean right in the heart of Melbourne and Footy, or away from it. O'Meara for instance wanted to steer clear of Melbourne if he could, simply because he didn't want to be in the fishbowl. That, and the beaches that the Coast has on offer. :p

An article in the Herald Sun suggests that the Doggies are front-runners. It will be interesting to see what they would part with, and whether it could trump pick #2 + later pick.

If freo traded us their first rounder for gumby (every essendon supporter would be furious, plus the club wouldn't do it).
I think we would just keep the first rounder and draft a midfielder rather than flipping it to the suns.
Still, way too much invested in gumby to trade him, we've put so much time into him
 
first round pick for an unproven, injury-cursed player, yet to play out an entire season? i reckon essendon would take that, and freo would avoid gumby like the plague.

not trying to have a go at gumby, sucks that one can be so struck down with injury, but from a club point of view that's how i'd see it.

Should the Suns climb off the bottom and into 17th spot, however, things would really heat up. The word among AFL recruiters is that the Suns wouldn't pick Grundy but prefer to trade pick No.2 back to GWS in order to secure hulking West Australian youngster Jesse Hogan from the mini-draft.

As much as I'd love a Harley clone, A young KPF compared to Jonathan Brown would appeal more. What do you guys / gals think? I'm also amused at the notion of us being known as Hogan's Heroes when we start pushing for premierships.

The Hogan's Heroes tag is a good one, but from what I've seen of the players, Martin is better than Hogan.
 
I struggle to see how Hogan would fit in with our current dilemma of having too many talls on the list already? We're set for future KPF's with Dixon, Day and Lynch. There's even a bit of back-up there with Gorringe waiting in the wings. Would rather put continued development into them than pick up somebody new and get rid of the years we've put into guys like Dixon or Gorringe.

I think Hogan can play defense as well, a bit like Hurley.

That doesn't necessarily make much of a difference for us, since we're set for big gorilla KPD options too. Warnock and Bock aside, we have Thompson and Schade coming through. Not to mention other tall options like Hutchins and Tape, though these guys aren't really KPD builds I suppose. Dixon, who I mentioned above, has been re-worked into a real swing-type player just so he can stay in the squad. We can't have many more of these I wouldn't think.

At either end of the ground, even in the ruck, I just cannot see how we could fit Hogan in the side, unless we discard a couple of players that we've put some continued effort and investment into.

Just my opinion of course. I've been proven wrong before. ;)

I'd take a first rounder and run, TBH.
Suspect only loyalty would see the club do otherwise - doubt very, very much anyone would offer that.
