Crackdown on defenders
By Peter Ryan

CONCERNS about the declining number of contested marks being taken this year will see AFL umpires crack down on defenders blocking or checking forwards off the ball in 2013.
The umpires will be asked to slightly adjust where they position themselves so they can pick up more infringements inside the 50 metre arcs.
They will also be tighter when adjudicating on infringements that happen when the ball is more than five metres away from the contest.
The average number of contested marks per game declined from 25.4 per game in 2011 to 23.2 in 2012, as players got smarter at stopping a forward's run without giving away a free kick.
This statistic was a reversal of the upward trend in the average number of contested marks per game that had been happening since at least 2008.
Feedback from clubs and players indicated that increased congestion and the emphasis in recent years on stopping holding at stoppages had drawn umpires closer to ball-ups around the ground and made it more difficult for those officiating to detect defenders blocking or hampering forwards before the ball arrived.

Not sure what's going on with the timeclock at the Saints!

He did say "maybe" if it were a definite BBQ then by golly I'd pay for 45k memberships myself just so he had to follow through, and hand them out in front of him for the lols. :p

Just organise it without him using social media. Grammy can be the next Cory Worthington.

ST Kilda has the chance to make a flying start to next season, dodging all of this year's finalists in the first month.
The Saints will capitalise on their ninth place finish this year by taking on four fellow bottom-10 clubs before playing Sydney in Wellington, New Zealand, in Round 5.

In a fixture to be released tomorrow, it is believed St Kilda will start its season against Gold Coast, Richmond and Greater Western Sydney (in Canberra) before the much-hyped showdown with an Essendon team featuring former Saint Brendon Goddard in Round 4.

It will meet Carlton in a Round 7 Monday night clash as well as Adelaide and Collingwood in the first eight weeks, meaning only two of its first seven games are against 2012 finalists.

Like Carlton, St Kilda has a chance to take advantage of this year's finish outside the finals, as bottom-10 sides will have a maximum of two games against only two of this year's finalists...

ST KILDA has lost Brendon Goddard, but not its status as having the oldest list in the AFL.
The Saints ended the trade period still burdened by an average age of 25.7 years, despite losing the seasoned star to free agency.

It is a statistic that provides a major challenge for coach Scott Watters considering the widely-held perception that the Saints have slipped from the premiership zone.

But the durability and consistency of the club's top-end players, so close to the ultimate success in 2009-2010, have helped it cheat nature so far.

The Saints finished ninth this year, relying on the usual suspects and the exciting development of Rhys Stanley, Ahmed Saad, Terry Milera, Tom Simpkin and Arryn Siposs, but face a delicate balancing act despite Watters' impressive start...

Our form vrs Richmond & Essendon has not been that good. We smashed Essendon in our last game vrs them, but they were rubbish by then, we had had issues with them even when we were almost unbeatable. Furthermore Essendon were very good at the beginning of the year before fading.

Richmond for some reason we seem to have issues defeating in the last couple of years. No game is easy, Gold Coast has a wealth of talent that should be getting to AFL level proformance next year. Adelaide, Collingwood & Sydney all very strong teams. The GWS game is the only one that is close to a gimmie. Ralph just showing how much of a fool he really is.

Dont think those headings are quite big enough K, I cant quite read them properly :D:p

Essendon were beating us purely on pace. A lot of the time they were just kicking to space and easily winning the race to the uncontested ball.
Last season however they were not outpacing us as much ( if at all ).
Herd and co have taken the focus of pace and they are trying to muscle up.
Meanwhile we have injected some handy pace. Also we should easily be able to Dempster their big overpaid midfielder.

Richmond are actually very good at winning contested ball and we need to get better at it.

So how long until our draft picks go up? There's a "win and be sacked" article on the AFL site regarding Melbourne. Will they wait until after the draft to punish them?

Not sure that they will from this years draft. Two reasons, the investigation will take too long & the AFL will not want to lower the draft figures even more.

"Clubs have also largely lost faith in the national draft pool that they rated highly just 18 months ago, meaning fewer than 100 first-time players could be drafted this year"
