Do you mean being prepared to let another champion go in order to use the compo pick to pick a defender? I'm not quite sure what you mean here.

I would say that the brains trust must have been confident that Sully wouldn't be taken for them to let him go. That, or all of us are overrating him and they have no opinion of him!

I agree that Sheringham has quite a few mids in front of him. The club does in most cases tend to give rookies the allocated couple of years to demonstrate whether they are up to AFL level or not. Sheringham will have to go well in 2013 or it will be curtains. Same for Eardley and Burbury really. Walker, being KP, may be given a bit longer.

Lets see If I can be clearer 2nd time. The tactic of trading for a young player in system rather than just drafting If Caddy contributes quickly then perhaps we add this approach to our normal way of procuring players . ie may quicken the replacement, so if for instance a kid like Corr became available in two years time we look at what it takes to get a deal done.
Now I accept we no longer have a comp pick to trade , so it would be a harder thing to arrange but we may think there is more value in a player in system than one not in it yet

With our forward line being as strong as it is, I can see Walker being asked yo move to defence to be our "Gorilla" defender. I'd actually like to see him in defence, for his own sake as much as anything, as I just don't see him being able to dethrone Vardy from CHF.

I think he has to SC. Might suit him too.

I don't subscribe to the theory that Walker is a CHF and that is the end of the story.
There is a question mark over Walker's kicking. But I have often noted how some players who have difficulty kicking at goal have no such problems hitting running players or kicking to position. He has worked hard on his fitness and I would not be too surprised if he stacks on a good number of kilos over the summer through gym work. I honestly have difficulty understanding why Walker cannot play in defence.

Id agree with this. If we looked back at Lonergan , early days , would anyone have had confidence he could be our "big" KPD? I like Walker as a player but Im not sure he has enough high end forward skill to be a gun CHF. Compare his nous to Kersten for instance in the VFL GF. He relies on his athletic ability.
With some quality imput he could develop into a sold back man , his stamina would give him a good help as well. Not writing him of as a forward but as Longergan showed , you might do it for a while , may even be moderately successful but without that "X" factor (Menzel,SJ,..) it can be a tough gig to sustain it. (Brown has that nous , he has a different set questions... body , strength , ...)

Perhaps with Walker, Bathie , Brown and Hamling on the list, Wells & team thought our need for Sully was not as high as we did.

FWIW i reckon Walker would be a good backman. Just doesnt seem to be a natural forward but i think his physical attributes will greatly assist him in defence.

Yeah I think he lacks the class of a forward and his kicking is below average however his athleticism, work ethic, endeavour and contested marking is very good
