My reaction when we pull an '87, right down to the prelim loss at the death due to a 50m penalty:

Didn't want to start a new thread so this one seems sort of appropriate for this post. I've been looking at a few stats of our recent seasons, in particular who we have defeated and lost to. These are stats from 2008 to 2011 (four years of the Bailey era). They may or may not be significant when predicting our upcoming season, depends on your own opinion.

88 games, 23 wins, 2 draws, 63 losses. A winning percentage of just 26%.

19 of those wins were at the MCG, 2 at the GABBA and 2 at TIO. We did not win at any other venue during that period.

Teams we beat during this period:

4 x Richmond, Brisbane
3 x Port Adelaide, Fremantle
2 x Essendon, Adelaide, West Coast, Gold Coast
1 x Sydney
0 x Carlton, Collingwood, Geelong, Hawthorn, North Melbourne, St Kilda, Western Bulldogs

(Drew once each with Sydney and Collingwood)

Despite the bleakness of the above stats, our record against non-Victorian sides at the MCG is actually very impressive.

16 games, 13 wins, 1 draw, 2 losses. A winning percentage of 81%.

Over the last two seasons, our record at the MCG is almost break even. 12 wins, 1 draw, 13 losses.

Given all that, here are my predictions for our 22 games this season.

Brisbane (MCG) - Win - Interstate team at the 'G, our bread and butter.
West Coast (PS) - Loss - Western Australia? Forget about it!
Richmond (MCG) - Loss - Returning from WA, Tiges seem up and about early.
Bulldogs (MCG) - Win - We'll buck the trend against Victorian sides and win here.
St Kilda (MCG) - Loss - Saints senior players will be too professional to drop this.
Geelong (SS) - Loss - It's like a victim returning to the crime scene. Mortifying!
Hathorn (MCG) - Loss - As if the previous match wasn't bad enough...
Sydney (MCG) - Loss - Will be competitive but Swans too strong here.
Carlton (MCG) - Loss - We haven't got close in recent years, probably won't change.
Essendon (MCG) - Win - Just like last year, we'll snap our streak against the Dons.
Collingwood (MCG) - Loss - Anything could happen. I'm predicting spirited loss.
GWS (MCG) - Win - Smash the new kids, boo the traitor. Pleasant Sunday afternoon.
Brisbane (GAB) - Win - We have a good record against the Lions at any ground.
Richmond (MCG) - Win - We'll split the two matches against them this year.
Fremantle (ES) - Win - I can see us finally breaking our Docklands hoodoo.
Port Adelaide (TIO) - Win - The hot streak continues at our home away from home.
North Melbourne (ES) - Loss - Thud! Back down to Earth we come.
Gold Coast (MCG) - Win - And back on the winners list we go.
St Kilda (MCG) - Win - Our confidence is up, this time we'll finally beat the Saints.
GWS (MO) - Win - Another chance to hammer Scully in the nations capital.
Adelaide (MCG) - Loss - A win could take us to September...so expect a loss.
Fremantle (PS) - Loss - Season hinges on this result, won't go our away sadly.

11 wins, 11 draws. We'll finish between 10th and 12th. A season of improvement particularly with a soft draw, but ultimately we'll just fall short of finals.

Premiers - Geelong (doubt it)

Brownlow - Ablett

Coleman - Franklin

Spoon - Pet shop boys - Goooo west Sydney

Melbourne to finish - 9th

Number of BF MFC guys (Clad in a balaclava) to show up at the 'G to welcome Judas - 33

First Dees board Meltdown - Round 2

First call to sack Neeld: Round 7

Watts hailed as a demigod: Rd 3

Call for Watts to be dropped: Rd 4

I think 2012 is the year of the HAWK
They will win the Flag.
Buddy will win the goal Kicking
Hodge the Brownlow
Where will the Dees finish?
Very good question!
My summation is based on the following.
- we have with the addition of Clark and Magner the same players as in 2011 and a large number of those proved they are not up to the task.
- We again start with a number of injuries
Jurrah ( 40 Goals 2011 )probably out till the court case and who knows may never play for the Dees again.
Sylvia out for five matches which could easily be longer
Tapscott starts another season on the back of an operation and restricted pre season
Grimes again showing how brittle he is, no guarantee he will play a full season.
Gawn out for the season. we look very short of ruckman if anything happens to Jamar.- Our senior list with a couple of exceptions are average at best.
- A new game plan that even if we are capable of implementing will take time to master.
- we lost our heart and soul last Tuesday
I have gone through the Fixture a number of times and the number of wins I have confidence in is 5.
If we then split the two with Richmond ( as last year )we have 6
Add a win against Adelaide at the G ( we seem to be able to beat them at the G ) makes 7
I then start to get desperate for another game, perhaps the Dogs or saints if as expected they slip a bit and we catch them on the right day.
So the absolute max. number I can see is 8.
That would make us about 13 -14 th.
The first half of the year could be very bad, of the first eleven games I am confident of winning the first game then we need luck to get another 1 or 2 vs Dogs or Richmond.
We could easily be 1 and 10.
IMO 2012 will not be a year to remember

Well well well. What a terrible season, we had such optimism back in March! With the final 8 set (not yet in position, but still), now is the time to look back on all the ridiculous predictions we made early in the year. Lulz will ensue.

Ageing Demon was eerily prophetic in his predictions. Doubt we'll be as optimistic next March; although by then our list will have changed, we'll have drafted some insta-guns and the pre-season will have been the best yet!
