Mod note: a trade thread was prob overdue. This post and a few below have been moved from the 2012 Draft thread.
----------

Chris Knights from Adelaide is of big interest to me. 27 next year, marking half forward/mid, class footballer.

A few years ago maybe. He's a slow, outside, HFFer. Probably Bewick is ahead of him ATM I reckon.

Waaaay too injury-prone for my liking acu.
Just of late, definitely getting over the top of them, 27 next year, 3-4 quality years ahead of him. Definitely keen to pick up 1 24-27 year old that can really add something to the team. Other contenders?
Wellingham is out of contract, 350k could nab him.

Knights has 15, 18, 5, 16 in the previous 4 seasons and only 1 this year.

I'm not sure on Wellingham. Bit of a downhill skier for mine.

TFB, you are kidding. We talking about the same footballer?

Yep, rarely influences a game up for grabs. That's my impression anyway. Probably hard to tell either way with the likes or Swan, Pendlebury, Thomas, Beams, Ball & Sidebottom seemingly ahead of him.

I know you like those flashy types though! :p

Unrestricted free agent, no trade required.
Very classy outside player, and can really hit the scoreboard too. Remember in 2009 had a big goal kicking year, hit the scoreboard nearly everygame and had a run where he kicked 19goals in 5 matches.

Would be a handy addition if he could stay fit, wouldn't like him taking time off our developing players thou

I was under the impression that Chris Knights was from Melbourne and wanted to go back there, so it would be hard to attract him to come to Brisbane. I am not sure if he will ever get back to that form, and has really struggled since 2009 for form and hasn't been the same player since. It is a big no for me.

I would target QLD'ers that want to come home, or players from top clubs/or young talented players who are not getting an opportunity for their teams. Wellingham would be a nice fit to our midfield IMO, and has seemed to step up in games where the bigger players haven't been there or have struggled, he is also a goal kicker. Dayne Beams is very unlikely to come home, but I wouldn't mind throwing 500K at him, would cost our first rounder easily though so a high price. Kurt Tippett is another who would come at a high price but is he worth it???, he seems to be a good forward but not an elite forward, I hate his kicking for goal and would be wary on this alone, our first rounder should be enough.

I would have a look at Jed Lambs from Sydney, he is a talented HFF who has not played an AFL game as of yet for Sydney, it would require a trade. I wouldn't give anything higher than a second rounder for him.

Freo have some young players with talent that won't come on as well as before with Ross Lyon at that club (doesn't play the kids). I would have a sniff at Jayden Pitt and Nick Suban, Pitt in particular could be a good player off the wing with his run and carry and great footskills.

I would also look at the Gold Coast and some of their young players, all had talent as juniors yet they will take time to come on and with so many some need to be cut. As well as this they are already settled in QLD. Piers Flanagan would be high on my list, looks to be a good utility player, also would have a look at Hayden Jolly and Josh Toy who is being played out of position.

What about trading one of our picks to the suns for their qld zone pick and get clay cameron like what we did with zorko. The suns will likely only use 3 picks this year due to their list getting shrunk down so we may be able to get him for only a pick downgrade. Maybe our 2nd round pick for clay + 3rd round pick.

IMO we should adopt the "Sydney" model, i.e. identify a genuine need and trade accordingly. No value in chasing random talent just because it may be available and in the process deprive one of our emerging cubs with the opportunity to develop. We have some very good talent in the reserves, e.g. Karnezis, Acorn, Lisle, Retzlaf (until injured) and Beams etc who can't force their way into the 1sts at present, plus a host of others such as Bartlett, Clarke and Docherty on the rise and hopefully Staker to come back. Lets not forget Polec is in this mix as well. For every trade proposed, posters should identify the "Sydney" need and who in the current team therefore becomes expendable.

Have to totally agree with this statement, I believe it was Kerr who came out recently saying they had identified 3 needs: speed in the midfield, utility ruckman and KPP's. So I would assume that over the trade and draft that these areas would be looked at. I would hope that they would look at players to trade in within a certain age bracket as well: 20-24. If 2016 is the year we have identified to be force then these player/s would be 24-29.

Wellingham- set the standard for offensive and defensive running. Can break the lines with his pace. Only 22 or 23. How many times in a game do you see Wellingham go third up in the marking contest either deep forward or deep back. He works hard both ways.

I know we got rid of him but what about Brad Dalziell ? I know he's been injured a lot over in perth and its his home state but he is a def an AFL standard Midfielder... also is in that 24-28 age bracket the lions have mentioned as weakness in our squad.
Also can someone tell me why Jordan Gysberts hasn't been getting a game at Melbourne ? Go for him I say if he isn't getting a game at Melbourne... Pick 23(our compo pick) for Gysberts ?

I don't believe he fills a need. He doesn't have the foot skills to hurt the opposition and is very one-dimensional.

Has had a couple of injuries this year but is being discussed for a possible senior return this week. Knows how to find the footy and is as hard as nails. I'd be interested but that seems like a lose trade for Melbourne given Neeld wants to play a really contested style of footy. Blease or Strauss would interest me too.

Gysberts has been injured. Only just coming back through the maggots now. I taug at his old school and word is the dees are very happy with him, so I doubt they'd entertain that low a pick for him. Plus I think he's more an inside accumulator, and I think we have a few in that area already. Now Blease on the other hand...

Edit: what POBT said!

Aren't they the needs Kerr flagged before last year's trade period / draft week?

Wellingham has really come on in the last few years and I think he would compliment our midfield group nicely.

One of the things i'll be interested to see is what the club does if Hudson decides to retire.
