*sigh* is anybody here saying that there isn't?

People are assuming that Siposs can play the Goddard role simply because it is vacant.

If Siposs can play the Goddard role then why are there not a lot more players in other teams that play the Goddard role?

Just because the role has been vacated does not mean that someone else from the team can fill it.

Heard plenty of rumours that Josh SImpson has been running around in almost all of freo's midfield simulation drills. Will have to wait and see where he's at in NAB of course. Will be attending the free vs crows trial match in a fornights time roughly and ill keep you posted on what i pick up there as well :)

He's going to be a gun and he does some spectacular stuff at training, but I don't think he'll be AFL-ready yet this year.

Come to think of it, I don't think there are any rookies this year who are worth a look... plenty of ones from the year before looking to breakout though!

Playing Goddard's old role is not the same as being Goddard. I don't think anyone expects another player to play it as well as BJ did, but the role will be filled. Doesn't mean the role will be exactly the same as it was previously. A players own skill set and limitations will dictate the nature of the role.

This is precisely the point.

As far as Siposs goes, for DT purposes he's likely to get a role more of half back rather tan forward.
That means he's more likely to get some good scores like he did in a couple of games last year. ( Along with his age and observed improvment to date ).
Having said that I dont have him. Only room for so many mid pricers.

With Staker looking unlikely now, I think it could be more beneficial to have more mid-provers in your forward and go for rookies elsewhere. Rookies in forward line look weak...eg. Siposs

Actually, from a DT perspective, it doesn't matter whether he is as good, just whether he is likely to dramatically increase his scoring output as a result of the change in role. I think he'll increase output, but has low JS - so will pass. He may improve enough in the first few weeks to make a profit and upgrade, but he needs to get a good run in the side to realise this value. I believe the Saints early fixtures are good, so if his form is ok in the NAB, it may be worth a punt.

I completely agree. My forward line is full of mid pricers - Wellingham, Siposs, LeCras and Bynes with Macaffer and 1 space for a rookie on the pine. There seems to be a few more rookie defenders this year and rookie forwards are hard to come by.

Still undecided on my mid set up though.. Have Swan, Ablett, Murphy, Stanton, Ball and Moloney with 4 rooks. I could drop moloney and upgrade a backman or put it into my forwards... My question is this though. For 309k who represents better value?

Have you seen St. Kilda's list? Siposs has excellent job security.

I'm assuming that's directed at me. I haven't run through their list, but a few Saints people have mentioned that they want to get more youth into the midfield, so some of the older guys may start to drift into other positions.

And for the moment, with the exception of clubs like GWS, GCS, and to a lesser extent the Bulldogs and Melbourne - I don't consider many 20 yr olds to have excellent JS. They simply aren't physically and mentally mature enough to cope week in and week out with the rigours of the game. I think he's rated at around 300K, so I'd want him to play every single week and consistently improve.

Given that many are tipping the Saints to slide and slide hard, he may be someone that is in and out of the side a bit.... Only time will tell. I could quite easily be wrong and he'll be the bargain of the year. I'll certainly be looking at everyone I can before I lock my side in....

I'd expect the Saints will have 15 players locked in :
Fisher, Dempster, Gwilt, Gilbert, Geary

Armitage, Steven, Hayes, DalSanto, Montagna

Saad, Milne, Riewoldt, ( Wilkes/Kosi )

McEvoy

Then there are experienced players available, but possibly not played much.
Schnieder, Jones, Ray , Blake

Then there are young players who already have a few games in them, expected to get more.
Simpkin, Siposs, Milera, Roberton, Dennis-Lane, Hickey

Then there are some younger, less experienced players expected to get more games:
Newnes, Ross, Dunell, Ledger, and watch for a rookie elevation of Curren.

Its all just guesswork though, and we may find that someone like Farren Ray gets Goddards role, ( and he'd be OK at it too ) and becomes a massive DT bargain after getting the rough edge of the wedge last year. Newnes has gained 5Kg ( thats's not too much is it Mr ASADA )? and is getting praise from the senior players and coaches this pre-season, but he's awkwardly priced.

Players like Siposs will need to keep performing at a consistant high level to lock themselves into the team, and a lot may depend on others, for example if Simpkin becomes an effective defender it may free up Gilbert or Fisher, which may affect Sippos' chances. So while Schulzenfest obviously has a very high opinon of Siposs, I'm not that confident he'll be playing every game.

Then again with all the trades this year do we really need to give a rats tossbag.

Ideally you want to use them only for downgrade/upgrade options, particularly in the middle if you can. So sideways trading, while possible, isn't ideal...

This year it could be beneficial.

If done correctly, yes. But not to replace people that maybe shouldn't have been selected in the first place.

There are four trades that probably won't be needed for anything else.
When Round 1 is finished there will be a couple of players who have unprecedented opening rounds while some others expected to do well spud it up.
The whole dreamteam contest will then be trying to guess weather they should trade or not.
( In my experience when I make these sorts of trades the tables are turned the following week, if I dont the trend continues, but thats just because God hates me ).

Early on it gives everyone a chance to fix up players before the price rise on anyone who is underperforming or even dropped.

If you nail it though, it gives you a nice advantage to use your trades strategically.

Agreed.

Know exactly where you are coming from.....

Am I crazy for thinking Jack Watts is great value, with Dawes playing the key fwd I can see Watts playing the Goddard/Gibbs role on the hbf picking up a heap of cheap unaccountable possessions.

Gorringe as the 3rd ruck will be good cash cow.

In theory it's a good option, but can he cope with a defensive forward assigned to him ? He played well back last year, but will clubs let him rack up lots of ball there ?? Have to watch and see.

Agree'd. A few years back it was easy to find a DT backline full of sweeper type players who would rack up massive scores.
Nowday's we seem to be better off finding players who are named as defenders, but who will be spending time in the guts.
