2013 Crowd Numbers

What do you guys estimate the crowd will be this weekend?

I think we will be lucky to pull 35,000

It is one of the perverse results that markets throw up when you have silly conditions:

1 - 1.8 million people
2 - Only 2 teams
3 - stadium holds 44k

Supply is (necessarily) inelastic but the demand curve is picking up a more and more extreme point on it.

The comparable scenario in Melbourne would be 4 teams, with 2 home games a week and both of those games held at Etihad.

I call bullshit on the stadium capacity. I know it's the official number but it must be wrong as we can never get much over 40K, no matter what. 4 thousand less just seems wrong.

44k must be with all dinning rooms, bars and offices full. Not actually watching the game in a seat.

Well we can't rely on Melbourne supporters, they don't even show up to their own games.

Yeah I think it will be sub 35 as well, unless everyone smells a mexican wave. We only pulled 32,687 against them last year.

Taking up on JMac's point one would think the clubs would have an interst in keeping the new stadium capacity to below 50k. A lot of people already pick and choose whether to go to a particular game or not, even having pre paid for a seat. if you ca get a decent seat rocking up on the day why would you bother taking out a membership(season ticket)?

I think I am in the minority who think the new stadium should be capped at something like 50-55k. All these people thinking it should be 70k or 80k, I think that is simply not necessary. At least from a Freo perspective, anyway. Even for the Eagles, I'm not sure their long waiting list can be used to directly indicate how many people would get season tickets once presented with an option where they don't actually need season tickets any more.

I really doubt we will ever fill the new stadium, apart from finals and derbies. And yes, I am thinking into the future ... I think people really overestimate the impact of population growth on how many people will want to go to the football. The real impact would be how expensive they make tickets. If they make it a lot cheaper, then, yes, I could see the merits in a larger capacity stadium. But for some reason, I can't see them dropping prices.

If we start losing, our crowds could easily drop to 20-25k if the stadium is so big that people don't need to buy a season membership. That would be horrible in a huge stadium.

Depends on the weather for mine. If it's a fine day I think we could see close to 35,000 but if it's wet I can see it being more like 30,000.

Members who don't turn up make the diff. The seat is not available for sale but is also not counted in attendance. You might get 37k "attendance" but 41k seats paid for.

That was a Saturday Night game and our last home game of the season too wasn't it?

I'm going with 31k.

Better than I was expecting. Atmosphere was pretty dead at the ground, but there wasn't much to get excited about besides clapping goals.

Probably the biggest crowd reaction all day was when that Demon kicked the ball into the back of Frawley's head. Happened in front of us and every bay in the area just burst out laughing. I was laughing too, but part of me actually felt sorry for Melbourne for a brief moment there.

Every time I started to feel sorry for them I just thought of that game where we blew a 9 goal lead, or that game where we conceded 7 goals to nothing in the last quarter in torrential rain to blow a 3/4 time lead. **** em.

But the turnout was good. Especially compared to Hawthorn who, despite just hitting the half a million member mark when little Fido signed up, could only draw 28,000 at the MCG where tickets are a third of the price.

Keep winning and we'll have no problems selling 55,000 of them before the season starts.

And if we're playing a bottom-of-the-ladder team, it's raining, or it may rain, Taylor Swift's concert is on at the same time, etc then we may have a seat or 10,000 vacant. Just sayin' ...

I think our average crowds will jump to around 40-45K when the new stadium is finished mostly due to the increased availability of quality seats. At the moment for new members I'm pretty sure you can only get the crappy seats at the city end in the sun, and with the majority of Freo games on Sunday Arvo this is a massive deterrent. There will also be a few thousand walk ups each week confident they'll be able to get tickets at the gate.

And the MCG had 15,000 empty seats on Saturday night for a game that was officially sold out.

What's your point?

Why don't paid-up members bother coming to the game because we are playing Melbourne, the weather's dodgy, etc?
Similarly, I won't leave a game early - regardless of how bad it is (and haven't we had a few of those over the years). It's my personal message to the team - if I can put the effort in and watch, then you can put some effort in and play.
I'm also not convinced about the numbers that people are putting forward.

Home Crowd v Lions: 33,384

Average Home Crowd 2013: 35,918

2013 Average v 2012 Average: Up 2,352

Was impressed with the turnout yesterday, here's hoping to big crowds in the next couple of weeks!

I had a look at Ticketmaster before the game yesterday for shits n giggles and the only seats available were restricted viewing tickets... how does that work with only 33,000?

We have a lot of members who do not come to all games.

If I was ever to miss a game (which I never), I would let the club know so they could re-sell my tickets.
