Great crowd and match to finish the season on.

I think the after match concert and meet the players on the sacred turf was also a wonderful innovation and should be expanded. What a terrific way for fans to connect to the G.

Over 100,000 is huge when you consider the other 1000,000 plus crowds back in the 1960 and 70s counted ALL the people in the G not just those who have a ticket so on that criteria yesterdays crowd would have been 115,000+

All the doom and gloom mongers in the media though out the season saying the drugs in sport would hurt the AFL were wrong as usual.

As an aside the NRL are really struggling to get big crowds in Sydney their two PFs with all NSW teams playing could only pull 82,318 in total

Just had a read of 'crowd watch IIII,' they had tickets available to the gf this monring. on game day. For less than $100. I knew they didn't have a big a following as the AFL, but i'm seriously jealous!

The RL GF tickets go on sale weeks before the event and still they struggle to sellout a smaller stadium in a larger city!
Says something about the real strength of the two codes the morons on LU have been fretting for weeks the the GF wouldnt sell out with one fool claiming that the AFLs 100,007 crowd was all the tickets sold not the attendance at the ground.
The MCG would hold 105,000 if they ever sold the 10,000 standing room tickets that is allowed but the MCC have the crowd capped at 95,000 seated and 5000 standing so with no shows a crowd of over 100,000 like this year would have sold at least another 1000 + tickets.

Heard on the radio that with some of the 110k+ crowds reported in decades past they were including not just patrons, but everyone in the ground, including media, staff and football personnel, etc, and that if we went by that standard, the ground attendance would have weighed in at 115k this year.

Having tickets available on the day for the NRL GF, though, is just crazy.

Amazing that our finals average was up despite a game at Skilled, and two finals involving Port (one of which was at the MCG against Geelong). Imagine if Richmond make it to week 2 next year....

Next year we can also look forward to a boost in crowds at the new Adelaide Oval, and the completion of the protracted redevelopment of the SCG (just in time for Buddy-mania). As the Giants and especially the Suns continue to improve, the negative impact they have on crowds (both home and away) will also be lessened. I thought it would take about 10 years for the short-term crowd pain of expansion to be corrected, but it's looking like things may be back to where they were (and possibly better) in half that time. Then in 4 years average crowds will skyrocket when the 65,000 Perth stadium opens. The future is looking bright indeed.

The Docklands Stadium deal (requiring 44/45 games to be played at the venue) is also due to expire in 2014 or 2015. A greater number of higher drawing fixtures at the MCG (and 2-3 more Carlton home games) will also likely contribute to greater crowds.

The said the average across the home and away season (32,163) was still a long way short of the 2007/10 period of mid to high 36,000's.

By 2025 hopefully 40,000 plus averages will be the norm...

Yep

Yep the Docklands deal has always been a dud for both the AFL and Clubs right from day one.

Ian Collins has a lot to answer for along with the idiots at the clubs and the AFL who signed off on the deal.Collins was an accountant so he knew how to get the best for his employers.

its due to reduce to 40 games a year until 2025. That takes place from 2014 - the same time Carltons deal at the stadium expires. Carlton have already made it known that they want their games at the stadium reduced. it should be noted that due to finals not being played at the venue the league must play make up games at the ground (IIRC its 2 for every final missed, played the following season), so the actual number of games reduced will be minimal.

it should also be noted that the league exceeds is contracted game amounts at Docklands (48 games in 2013, 47 in 2012, 48 in 2011 etc)

This.

It'll be interesting to see how the league approaches MCG/Ethiad games going forward. Currently Collingwood + Melbourne (9), Richmond (8), Hawthorn (7), Carlton (5) and Essendon (4) typically share in 42 home games at the MCG (though that varies on whether or not a final is played at Ethiad). If Carlton shift a further 2-3 games to the MCG (as predicted) will the Docklands stadium games slide in line with the required games at the venue?

Much of that could depend on how many games North play in Hobart and how many games St Kilda and the W Bulldogs play at Docklands.

By 2025, that is when Essendon's anchor tenancy is up for renewal, the AFL may just well sell the stadium to a development company and build a stadium in a new location....

it also should be noted that the league is still required to stage a large number of matches with the potential to sell out the stadium, even after 2014. I dont expect much in the way of variation unless more Essendon games are dropped to docklands.

Gee, that is a big average, that average though, may be topped, a big if !!, but a WCE/Freo final at the new Perth Stadium, combined with Adelaide at their neww stadium, and some of the big 4 in Melbourne, with even some big Swans games at the new SCG ( yes i know :D, it is a big IF !!), would see that average move up to around 70,000 +

Finals series havent averaged more than 70,000 since the final 8 was introduced. Last time was in 1989. In fact, 1981, 1983, 1984, 1986, 1987, 1988 and 1989 all ranked higher than 70,000. 1980 topped out over 80,000. 70 and 80 k averages were the norm in the 1970s. In the 1960s the average finals crowd was in the 90,000's. The true hey day for finals crowds was 1968-1971, but then you only had 4 finals to worry about.

Average Finals Crowds

1968 - 106,432
1969 - 109,305
1970 - 111,747
1971 - 105,070

For any NRL fans out there, the NSWRL's heyday for finals crowds was also during this time...

There has been some conjecture as to how they used to measure those old crowds. Did the VFL include all non paying attendees in the numbers?

From my understanding Yes

I went to the G a couple of times with 100,000 in the old days and there is no way they would get away with the overcrowding on H & S grounds nowadays

There had to be 30,000 + standing room at those games and dont forget the tickets were sold on the day no pre booking and the Police determined when the ground was full and to stop selling.

The MCG was even packed at 80,000 in those days before the Great Southern Stand was built.
