Czech Republic just beat Switzerland 24-22 in the 5th set of the doubles. They needed 13 match points to get the job done in a little over 7 hours.

A Swiss win would've set the Wawrinka vs Berdych encounter up perfectly. Oh well.
Glad I went to bed.

Who do they have apart from Istomin?
Farrukh Dustov is a good solid player. Istomin/Dustov make a very good doubles team, and Istomin plays very well. Can see Istomin beating Hewitt and Ebden/Matosevic, and Istomin/Dustov could certainly give our doubles team some troubles. We should win without Tomic, but it'd certainly help if we did have him.

It'll be away, probably on clay, going to be a tough tie
Clay is Istomin's worst surface, they won't risk it. Will be on either grass or hard courts in my opinion. A fast hard court would be the best choice in my opinion; Istomin plays well on them and Hewitt is still great on grass.

Given they played their last 4 ties on clay, I can't imagine them changing it. Toughest surface for us anyway. Tomic's and Ebden can't really play on it

Really? That's really odd, Istomin's never made it past the second round of the French Open. I stand corrected. :p

Did take Lleyton to 5 sets at the French a few years back

Uzbekistan v Australia draw - Dustov v Tomic, Istomin v Matosevic, Dustov/Istomin v Ebden/Hewitt, Istomin v Tomic, Dustov v Matosevic

Interesting that Hewitt isn't named for the Singles rubbers. I think that is a good decision, particularly against Istomin. I could see Hewitt being put in for the 5th rubber if it comes down to that match.

Very important for Tomic to get a win in the first rubber. Is it being telecast on 7 or Foxtel?

Istomin has smashed Hewitt twice this year already so not surprised they are putting Marinko up as the sacrificial lamb. Hopefully Matosevic brings his Munich form from last year, but looks like we will be relying on Bernie winning the first tie. Dustov is the guy that the clay favours over everyone else involved in the tie. Interesting doubles pairing given Ebden is about the only Aussie Hewitt hasn't played doubles with this year. Marinko and Hewitt did ok in their tournament together (beat the Bryans). Ebden and Hewitt seem a little similar to play together, the Gooch while incredibly limited was always a good foil for Hewitt.

Wow, I'm actually agreeing with Rafter's decisions for once. Doubles is pretty key this tie. Tie doesn't look like it will be shown anywhere. Seven never show these ties

Tomic should account for Dustov but I can't see Marinko winning either of his matches (Istomin is a better player when on song [depends which Denis turns up though] and in my opinion Dustov is a horrible matchup for him). Tomic can beat Istomin, but whether he will is a different matter entirely. I'll back him on a matchup basis, though. We shouldn't have much trouble with doubles.

Can see us being 2-1 after the doubles. After that, it comes down to whether Bernard turns up to play or not. Have little doubt Hewitt will be brought in for the fifth rubber if it's not dead.

Will back us for a 3-2 victory.

Matosevic ended up losing in 4. First two results pretty standard. huge doubles match tomorrow. 4 quartefinal ties, with the home team first:

Canada vs. Italy
USA vs. Serbia
Argentina vs. France
Kazahstan vs. Czech Rep. (Czechs are already 2-0 up without Berdych)

Looks like there will be some tennis tomorrow morning.

Australia won the doubles match in 5 sets. Yikes.... Hope Hewitt pulls up alright for the singles tomorrow.

The other 3 qf ties are 1-1 after the singles, going to be some interesting day 3's this weekend

Zimonjic/Bozoljac beat the Bryan bros 15-13 in the fifth in almost four and a half hours!

Nestor/Pospisil and Bracciali/Fognini currently locked at 7-7 in the fifth after three and a half hours too.

Serbia leads USA 2-1
Argentina leads France 2-1
Czech Republic leads Kazakhstan 2-1
