I would think that Monash's performance against eltham was a better indication that they are a good side than last week's effort.

Monash have a lot of good hit up medium targets and are a good tackling side.

Will be a tough game for the Hoes and I'd see it very much a game that could go either way.

Agreed.

Inaccuracy cost Monash that game, inaccuracy of the opposition helped last week.

Round 4 Preview
Should be a cracker of a round. I suspect none of the pundits on this forum will select all five winners! SMD over Emmaus by 16 Pts (Despite the fact this game is at Bennettswood, the Animals were deplorable last time out and the Bloods should be buoyed by their comfortable win against the Gryphons. No doubt St Leos will give a more passionate performance, but I still reckon they will fall just short. Elvis Costello to be best afield).
Eltham over St Johns by 15 Pts (What may have been considered a lay down misere for the Turtles a couple of weeks back may now be the game of the round. St Johns, if they are to be a contender, need to take a scalp like this, however, Eltham are very highly skilled and structured as well and unless they can keep Ciavola under four goals they will fall short).
SMS over Gryphs by 35 Pts (Lock of the week on form and these fixtures are usually one-sided affairs. St Mary’s were ultra-impressive when the heat was on last weekend and their ability to win the contested ball has been a real area of improvement. They are also a most adept team at stoppages and should beat the Gryphons comfortably. Jake Kenyon to be prominent).
Yarra Valley over Hoes by 5 Pts (It was back to earth for the Bushrangers last week, who haven’t been so soundly beaten for a couple of years. I suspect they will have had a hard week on the track in order to regain some of the passion that was absent against the Jocs. Ivanhoe were blown away early at Research, but will be far more competitive at home especially as these guys played off in last season’s D3 Grand Final. I expect some fireworks in the first half, but the visitors to take the points in a low scoring affair).
Therry over Parade by 11 Pts (Tough one to pick as I still rate Parade but their poor percentage is a worry for all at Bundoora. The Lions were impressive last weekend, but I doubt they will be allowed as many uncontested marks against the Raiders. The home side just, with the Bannister Brothers proving the difference).

Round 4 Review

No time for thorough analysis this week, so apologies to all…

3/5 (13/20 cumulative) was reasonable but perhaps I was too hasty in singing the praises of the Bushrangers, whilst the win of the Gryphons was typical ‘backs to the wall’ style victory that has defined their play in recent seasons. The other matches went as predicted but the Jocs were most valiant in their loss at Eltham and Emmaus were a tad unlucky against South.

Round 5 Preview
Eltham over YV by 15 Pts (Two weeks ago I’d have selected the Bushrangers at home but not anymore).

Gryphs over Ivanhoe by 4 Pts (Nothing in this one but Matty Fletcher to star and get Monash over the line by less than a kick two weeks in a row).

Paradians over Emmaus by 21 Pts (Surely Parade couldn’t drop this one).

SMS over SMD by 13 Pts (Another that could go either way in another very tough round for the tipsters).

St Johns over Therry by 14 Pts (I’m finally on the Jocs bandwagon, so it is likely they’ll lose now).

Good luck to all

I think the lack of hit up targets are what have cost monash games. I have only seen them once but they didn't have a lot of tall timber up foward. There backline was considerably taller, one bloke down in full back who was quite handy, but that tall bloke that plays across half back was useless. Timid as a field mouse.

Mmm. Got over 50% correct last week and still tracking at 70%. Now if my locals cold all win it would be much higher !

Yarra Valley vs Old Eltham
Monash Gryphons vs Ivanhoe
Old Paradians vs Emmaus St Leos
South Melbourne vs St Marys Salesian
St Johns vs Therry Penola

Another interesting round with a few different results. The league looks really close but Therry seem to be the team to beat in my opinion.

looks like a season where the top 4 may not be settled until late.

Didn't get to see my boys Ivanhoe in action, dissapointing result against the Gryphs.

Well done to Yarra Valley who in my opinion are one of 3 teams fighting for a spot in the GF (and promotion) with Therry and Eltham.

from 4th - 9th spot, who knows.... it'll be one of those years where you may need 6+ wins to avoid relegation.

Went down and watched the Monash vs Ivanhoe clash on the weekend as I live close and my knee was playing up, missus would only drive me as a far as caulfield.

Anyway, Ivanhoe are possibly the most overrated side in the entire VAFA if that performance was anything to go by. If it wasn't for Paul Harris, they would be in Div 4. Ash close is not a good footballer. The bloke is a bean pole. The only reason he kicked 6 was because of 4 free kicks from the umpires and the fact that 100% of forward 50 entries go to him.

Word of advise Hoes, if you want to stay in Div 2, get a better game plan then kicking it to that overrated hack every time.

Scathing as always CC... I love it.

Good luck with the knee and the Mrs you might need a new one of each if they will only get you to Caulfield and Your boys play all the way out in Dandenong.

Anyone rate Monash as a chance this week against Therry with or without Robbo playing?

Defintely a chance.

Therry would be favourites but Monash aren't too far behind them IMO.

jarrod Bannister's in fair form so you wouldn't want him to get too much latitude.

No clear standout this year and injuries (or lack therof) and availability will play a big part for all sides.

Has anybody got a match report from the Eltham Vs Yarra Valley game? All reports it was a cracker.

A lot stronger side available this week for Yarra which proved too strong for Eltham right across the ground. Our run off half back proved the difference I think as the Eltham half forwards refused to chase. Their mistake I guess.

Injury is the only thing which will stop us this year.

I just need to confirm that coach Robin isn't the Yarra Valley coach, that is me and if Coach Robin could stop acting as me that would be great.
Thanks

There is a reason why they go to him a lot - the kid kicked 100 goals in Div 3 last year (which doesn't seem to be that different to Div 2 in terms of standard based on how YV and the Hoes are going). I'd do a bit more research before calling him 'not a good footballer'

Agree.

Although Yarra Valley should have been in D2 before this year and Ivanhoe are performing about where you would expect a club who has just come up in any division to be.

St Leos v SMS
Eltham v OP
Ivanhoe v St Johns
Therry v Monash
SMD v Yarra Valley

It looks like an easier week this week to tip. Expect big wins from Eltham over OP after being upset last week and expect YV to follow up last week with another big win.

It was a poor return last week as the locals didn't do me any favours.

Emmaus St Leos vs St Marys Salesian
Old Eltham vs Old Paradians
Ivanhoe vs St Johns
Therry Penola vs Monash Gryphons
South Melbourne vs Yarra Valley

St Marys over St Leos by 6 goals. Should be one that St Mary's don't have to come from behind to win.

Eltham over Parade by 10 goals. Are Ciavola and Crooks available? Won't make too much difference. Eltham by 10 goals.

Hoes over St Johns by 8 goals. St Johns are a decent side but I don't think their game style will match up well against us. Been wrong before of course ;)

Therry over the Gryphs by 3 goals. If it was at Monash I'd go for the Gryphs but they've got a touch of Guinness about them. Two even sides across the ground. Egglestone at centre half back could be a problem for Monash who don't have anyone to make him accountable to curb his attacks from half back.

South Melbourne v Yarra Valley Don't know anything about South except they are competitive. Yarra should win though by 4 goals.
