Yeah but what I got from it was that he seemed to be heavily regretting it.

I think Nickos is right that people are probably blowing it out of proportion. Anyone would be a bit bummed if they missed out on a big payrise by a few votes.

I just can't buy that. Regretting it, maybe, but "heavily". I'm not picking on words, but I think you're over stating it. Maybe he's having second thoughts, maybe he's just disapointed about not making top 5 and that is how it's being expressed - when all is said and done, his actions on the field and off, from what we can tell, seem to say he's pretty comfortable with things (though next season will be the test in this case I suppose).

BTW, not saying your wrong or making it up, just think it's a bit over stated.

Also, Mayne would have comfortably finished top 5 if he had have put in at least one 'good performance' in one of the finals. He was average at best, and slightly better than 'average' in the PF (where there were many great performances). Surely reason would see that he was still valued and just got pipped at the post in quite reasonable circumstances. I don't think he has much to complain about.

Regretting a move to a club that is still rebuilding and young whilst the one he is with is primed and has the best mix in years? All that hard work through the lean years of 08 and 09 plus 11 is gone because he greatly regretted going to Port for a little extra? Come on.. He is a huge part of the 22 and made the AA squad of 40. He would be heavily annoyed that had he played better against Geelong in the Qualifying final and a better contribution in the GF he would be comfortably in the top 5. He came runner up last season and then makes the GF the next, probably still bitter over the result like we all are still..

And while we're all criticising his finals performances, lets not forget that he was almost a late out for the GF due to ongoing back problems and spasms. That much has been dropped by numerous sources. I'm sure he'd have had more of an impact but the cumulative season is a war of attrition and he was clearly cooked from putting his body on the line all year.

Seems I need to clear up the fact that I personally don't think Mayne is actually regretting anything or even has plans of leaving Freo in the future, that's just how I interpreted the original comment. I don't think he's that disenchanted with the club.

I don't know why anyone would even mention something of that nature if that's what they weren't trying to convey.

Seems I've inadvertently garnered some pretty strong reactions on the basis of a misunderstanding.

I be bummed and whinge a little too if I knew I've just miss a good pay rise by a few votes. Doesn't mean that he is regretting decisions or anything. If anything lets hope it'll spur him up for another solid performance next year.

I actually don't like the idea of basing payments on B&F results.

I don't believe its a pay rise as such, but a bonus system. It would throw out the salaray cap too much on unforseen results during the year.

Can't see anything wrong with it. Every player gets their base salary as agreed to in their contract and if they have a good year, they get a one-off bonus.

Come on what is this? Last year was his break out and most consistent. This year he was solid but 5 players played massive roles and got the places ahead of him. Spurr was momentous in some games this season, Geelong Qualifying final being one. Mayne went largely missing during the finals series, and would definitely would've liked to had more goals.
If Port did offer that much, then why didn't he grab it and run? These sort of rumours from families of a player's is a tripe. Fyfe missed out in 2011 and rumours he wanted to leave, unhappy etc coz Pavlich nabbed it..
Id agree but it wasnt from his family, it was from him. Apparently he was pretty merry by that stage so I was told it could be the alcohol talking!

Well, should be based on a dialogue with the coaching stuff.

Player will dislike being dropped for structural reason a lot less then. And the current system could cause soem discontent when player A think player B is more like by the coaches when it comes to votes...

That's why our voting system works well and removes any bias.
5 coaches vote and they have to rate every player, not 1 or 2 people hand out selected votes to favourites.

At the conclusion of every game this season five members of the Fremantle coaching staff, including senior coachRoss Lyon, gave every player votes on a 1-5 basis. Top votes are awarded for what is regarded as an elite performance.

Fyfe polled votes in all 22 games he played in this season, including 15 or more on 10 occasions.
He entered the finals series in second place on 213 votes, 10 behind 2013 All Australian Michael Johnson, who polled in 21 of his 23 games this season.
That "every player" is actually what confuses everybody for years. My guess is still they give votes to the top 5 players of match. Otherwise not polling in games would be impossible.

I'd really like the club to clarify the voting system:

Crowley won on 146 votes while Fyfe on 263. Looks like they added a 5th voter, but that should only increase average votes by 25%.

The votes for individuals are difficult to reconcile with what we have been told about the voting system. Clearly the Doig results should be referred to the AEC for investigation. They may be able to find Mayne's lost votes - or not.

Are you sure there were four voters last year?

That article says Pav received 12 votes for his 6 goal haul in the Elim final, which would mean they only gave him 3 out of 5 on average. That seems a little low.

Stop talking about Chris Mayne leaving Fremantle he will never leave us if I had to pick the first 2 players in our club right now that would never leave it would be Pavlich and Mayne. SO STOP!

I wonder where Hill finished overall. Need a consistently great year from him next year, he definitely has it in him.

This x 1000. I love hilly and think he has taken a few steps up in the past two years but would love to see him in the top 3 - could be a Brownlow for him too!

I think the key is "rate".
I not sure how you get to an average of 11 votes per match but.

I imagine the only way this works is if the votes are not based on if you are the best out of five people but you get a 5 for executing your role perfectly and if you missed it completely you get zip. This to me would appear to be more the way I imagine RTB goes.
In one week you might get a bunch of players getting 5's and the next none.

Yep. They actually clarified this at the Doig and Snoz had some slide up on the screens explaining the votes process.

The votes for every player was something like:
5 - Completed their role with excellence
4 - High standard
3 - Good standard
2 - Minimun standard
1 - Low standard/Not satisfactory
0 - Rubbish

Whoo not totally of my rocker.

That's a bit more generous than last years. According to the 2012 year book it went;

5 - Outstanding: Elite performance
4 - Excellent: exceptional performance
3 - Very Good: strong contribution that influenced the match
2 - Good: fulfilled the role and made a solid contribution
1 - Fair: fulfilled the role asked
