Dustin Martin just doesn't seem to be worth the effort. The only saving grace is that most clubs would hold the same view, so it might mean that Martin is desperate to find a club and might come with an attractive salary. Otherwise, we shouldn't go near him.

Buddy is a different proposition again, I would not put buddy in the same category as Martin in terms of being a trouble maker.

I thought getting Daniel Cross to the club for one or two seasons might have been a good move. He'd be a great role model to the young midfielders, and he's an Albury boy.

I would even suggest that Martin isn't so much a trouble maker but rather lacks life skills and from my understanding one of the rare times that he started to get it together was when he moved up to Sydney to live and work for his dad after dropping out school in year 9.

Also it seems that he has had a minder all the way thru his time with the tigers which isn't really teaching him life skills and helping him grow its just having him under a mini house arrest.

Here is an up date of trade whispers from afl.com
GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY
If one club is set to dominate the upcoming trading period, it is surely Greater Western Sydney. The competition's newest franchise has pressing needs everywhere on its list and has repeatedly stated its intentions to add some experience. Lance Franklin, of course, has been the name linked all season and some believe he is firming as a likely Giant. His combination of size, skills, experience and charisma would instantly improve the club's fortunes, on and off the field. Dustin Martin's situation at Richmond, where he appears to have reached a stalemate over a new deal, has vaulted him into the GWS frame too. Those additions alone would transform the Giants, but a ruckman and a key defender are needed just as badly. Sam Fisher and Shane Mumford have been linked. Chad Cornes and Dean Brogan have retired, while Bret Thornton and Setanta O'hAilpin are among some early delistings as the club clears the decks. Taylor Adams appears set on a move back to Victoria, while Jonathon Patton falls into the rumour category. There have been whispers he could be moved on at a club that could have fellow key forwards Franklin, Jeremy Cameron and Tom Boyd on its pay roll. The Giants would need to get exceptional value, however, if they were to ship the No.1 pick to another club. - James Dampney

if you did opt for martin, do you think you'd trade for him or just through the psd? if you decided to give richmond something would you just give them your second pick?

No disrespect to the Tiges, but if we could get him through psd why would we throw away a pick or player through trading and disadvantage ourselves.

It's called good business. Forcing him to walk into the PSD wouldn't do you any favours in the long run.

to remain on good terms with the trading partners upon whom you may one day rely.

I doubt any club has done it for the benefit of both clubs involved. I cant really see in 10 years when the Giants come up and say "remember when?" The Tiges will turn around and say "so what this is now not then"

No club looks out for other clubs (looking all through BF is proof of this)

GWS are looming as the key player during trade period. They need to juggle all the players they really need and want and how they might get all those deals done. If pick 1 is off the table, of value at trading are - a couple of well rated players who want to move on, ND picks 9 & 20, the possibility of letting one of their out of contract targets slip to the PSD (unpalatable for their image in future trades) and getting Franklin by Free Agent rule.

You try and work out if you were GWS, how you would spend your (above) tradable commodities to get all the other players you want across to you.

does GWS need to offload some picks to meet the number of player limit, cause all this talk of GWS getting buddy, martin etc... along with all these picks along with what they could get for adams has me baffelled how they are going to fit them all in their roster.. am i missing something here?

We still have an extended main list - so up to 50 players, and after some recent delistings and retirements we have 6 free spots not including the likely trades of Bruce and Adams. So list room isn't an issue.

My take on Martin...

Two things I'd bet on:
- we won't 'force' Martin into the PSD or use the threat to derail negotiations
- we won't trade pick one for Martin

I think if negotiations or bidding reaches a point where the trade price is too high, e.g. Melbourne offers pick two, then we'll walk away. But if it falls apart and he makes it to the PSD we'd reassess because the cost would be significantly reduced.

I see potential with pick 9 or Adams, but it's not as if we're so hard up for midfielders that we need to throw together our assets to get Martin. If Adams or #9 isn't enough or gets outbid by another club, which seems likely especially with the Dees, so be it.

So according to that update, it might General Patton we put up for trade bait instead of Boyd?

I'm getting the impression that there haven't been many interesting offers for Boyd, so clubs are hoping Patton can be prised out for less.

So according to this report Dees have withdrawn there interest from Martin, Lions will meet with Martin's management soon (would be brave of them considering what happened with Fevola), and we are now meeting with Martin after having already had discussions with his management so my read of the situation is he will either join us or back down with the tigers and re-sign with them.

How so? GWS are 1st cab off the ranks, it wouldnt effect him in any way other than the Tiges losing out on a trade.
Clubs generally don't try to bend each other over. Very rarely do you see a club entice such a high profile player into the PSD, because as the other posters were trying to explain, there will come a time when the shoe is on the other foot, where GWS could be in danger of losing a Patton or Cameron for nothing, or will need another club eg. Richmond to help them deal with another club to get a deal across the line.
He could still quite possibly end up in the PSD if everything broke down dramatically, but history says it won't happen.
Will stay anyway IMO.

Fisher would be a great get for the Giants backline while the young players develop.
Martin has issues but the Tigers did offer him 0.5m a season and he is a very good player and worth the punt IMO.
Are Sam Fisher and Dustin Martin mates?
Then for fun throw in Franklin, Alan Didak, Heath Shaw a Dayle Gartlett.
Fortunately psychologists, publicists, body guards and life coaches aren't included in the salary cap.
Greater Wild Western Sydney.

As shown this year the Giants don't leave things till the last second. Extending all the contracts of players we want to keep well in advance, and as for the others well...

The Fev issue was that the Lions overpaid for him. The Blues wanted to get rid of him, so we offered Rischitelli and Bradshaw. That would've worked out alright - not fantastic, but not the club killing mess it became. Instead, when Rischitelli knocked them back, Gubby went a little loco and decided to outbid himself with Henderson and the Lions' first round pick for Fev and the Blues' second round pick. The initial trade would've been a car crash, but one the club could've walked away from as only Rischitelli would still be playing, and he's a workmanlike player at best. Mortgaging the Lions' future for Fev was what backfired and set the club back a couple of years by effectively trading the Lions out of two first rounds.
