GREATER Western Sydney could pull one of the biggest recruiting surprises of the year, turning to a 205cm basketballer to fill its first ruck void.
Largely unknown big man Rory Lobb has soared into first round calculations despite playing only nine senior games in his first serious season of football in the WAFL.
Swan Districts senior coach Greg Harding described the late-bloomer as "the perfect package", given his exemplary attitude and athleticism, and said "every AFL club is interested in him".

RICHMOND midfielder Dustin Martin has flown to Sydney to meet with Greater Western Sydney on Thursday as he continues to weigh up his football future.

Martin's protracted contract negotiations with the Tigers reached a flashpoint this week when the 22-year-old requested more time to consider offers from other clubs.

Richmond expressed its extreme disappointment at Martin's request on Monday, but the midfielder took to Twitter later that day to deny he had walked out on the club.

AFL.com.au understands Martin was due to meet with a Giants delegation on Thursday led by senior coach Leon Cameron, list manager Stephen Silvagni and CEO David Matthews.

And you think the best we can do is a spud ith baggage?
I think we can do better, if indeed he does want out. Besides, Martin can walk to the PSD where we can get him for nothing.

I'm calling it now. Martin for Adams WILL NOT HAPPEN.

It may not happen, and Martin does have some baggage...

I was speaking to one of his former class mates who also played junior footy with him. I think he came from a very rough area as according to his class mate, he is one of 3 of all the boys in his class that have NOT gone to jail. If you grow up in that area you are going to have a distorted view of what most think is right and wrong. He has done pretty well to aviod major trouble I would think as his environment didn't support anything else...

I would be devestated to lose him from RFC because of one reason. He is one of the most talented players in the comp. period. Once he fully matures around the ages of 25-27 he could be the best player in the game. A spud you say - I don't understand that comment at all.

Also - I hate how the Giants are being given so many freebies. Taking him in the PSD for nought would make me hate Demetrio and his disciples even more - for allowing this kind of thing to happen.

For you the upside with Martin is you have a ready made gun mid - have you any idea how big the kid is btw?

The downside for you if you take him in PSD is that you will have less money to re-sign a plethora of 1st round picks in a few years and they will all want big $$. Then you have to ask what happens if Martin is signed and has ... some off field issues. He ceratinly is not a clean cut no risk proposition. That is probably why many clubs are baulking at talking about offers with him.

Is that risk worth taking?

your telling me hes readymade pppfffffttt
cant run out second half.after enough preseasons
went to a tough school.rubbish his dad saergent at arms at bikie gang

I think his granny got him clean in country vic and that's wher his 16yo talents were spotted
the tiges and AFL have moved heaven and earth to keep him honest and it hasn't worked
to be back in NSW will present a major prob for this bloke
the tigers have secretly hoped for 12 months somebody would garner a trade

We'd need to pay him his money regardless of whether he was signed via the PSD or a trade.

Is he a risk worth taking ? I wouldnt bet the cap room, the cultural risk *and* the cap dollars.

But two of them ? Yeah, I think I would, because as you say he's a very talented footy player coming into his prime.

A spud you say - I don't understand that comment at all.

I didn't call him a spud, one of your fellow Richmond supporters called him a spud earlier in the thread and I was responding to that comment. I think he can play. I just don't think we should be paying overs for him.

What's the likelihood that GWS will get Martin for nothing? That would almost ruin Richmond's finals chances next year immediately.

No one to blame but the Tiges there. They should of tried extending his contract or swapping him out well before now.

His contract is over as such he owes nothing

If GWS want him, and are prepared to meet his personal terms, then if he goes into the PSD as an uncontracted player then Richmond dont get a thing.

Yeah, I'm wondering how likely that is to happen. I fear that Richmond will be bent over here. I mean at least the clubs got compensation for losing guys like Ward and Scully. But the rules are the rules I suppose. I'm also wondering how likely it is for GWS to not try and organise a trade, given they might need to trade with Richmond in the future (although they might consider the payoff to be worth it). I'm guessing that if Richmond was to get a compensation pick, GWS would have to pick him up as a unrestricted free agent, not through PSD pick right?

How are Richmond bent over? His contract is finished with them. Why did they wait until recently to reopen negotiations?

First things first - do GWS want the kid ?

My guess is 'Yes'. He'd play firsts for us.

Second, can we afford his personal terms ?

This comes down to the Franklin Sweepstakes - I dont think we can afford him and Franklin.

Third, is he worth the cultural risk ?

Thats the big one.

My guess is he's 50/50, and his manager will play hardball - and it'll be hard for Richmond to climb down and compromise on, say 550x2 to keep him in red and yellow.

I think he's going into the PSD and GWS will get him.

Care to wager on that point. Say If it happens I will put whatever you like on my sig and post whatever you want on the main board. Same goes for if I am right.

You have no reason to trust what i am about to say but here goes. The AFL will not allow Martin to walk into the PSD for nothing. Considering the AFL have a active interest in your club they can make sure you give a fair trade. Martin's management knows that and so do the tigers

Delusional.

FWIW i don't think he'll go through the PSD, but it wont have anything to do with the AFL.

That is either speculation or wishful thinking on your part, as a neutral observer I think a fair deal will be done, it will be less than you want and more than GWS want to pay but don't kid yourself that Vlad will ride in on a white (straining with the weight) horse and force the Giants hand as it just won't happen.

If Martin is enough of a grub to walk into the PSD draft as I think you believe he just might then you can't talk about him as being worth a top pick, you have to judge the entire Martin package not just the talent and if you do that he has a big potential down side.

Still under contract until the end of October I think yes he could walk to PSD but trading between the two clubs will cease to exist for some time if that eventuates. Not good business really will only happen if the right trade can't be worked out if gws want him.

Still it makes it interesting either way, personally think that if he leaves trading will occur. But if it doesn't no one to blame. It will just be dumb luck that an uncontracted star wants to go to the team running dead last. Would these complaints be coming if he was a bottom or mid player?
