In 2014, the club was abuz by the pickups of Duggan, Lamb, Nelson and Cavka and so far they are showing glimpes of being a great draft bunch, as opposed to burst picks.

But what of 2013? Admittedly, Sheed will go just fine (albeit not sure of comparisons to Pendlebury, but who knows?) but what about Karpany at 31, Barrass at 43, or Main at 49. They all seem fringe players to me, or are they project players?

Do people think that the draft of 2013 has been a waste, or do you think we will see these guys debuting soon?

When you look at some players of class of 13 picked after the above players, we look at Tom Cutler, Honeychurch, Tom Langdon, Sam Lloyd, even Trent Dumont debuted last week :-( did we fail again?

Probably too early to tell with any of those draftees, Barass was hampered with injury when he started and is now doing well in the WAFL in a very tough position to be a young player in.

Main and Karpany are more concerning. Both have had injury issues but for AFL-standard players in their second seasons you want them to at least be pushing for senior selection, whereas these two are on the fringes of the WAFL side. It's not like they're RoPo (developing tall) either, the types of players they are you want them to develop early and display their talent - an example being Jake Neade or Jay Kennedy-Harris in comparison to Karpany who while not exactly the same types of players have at least shown something at AFL level.

2014 was a very good draft, i reckon you need to wait 3 years before you can actually make a call on a draft year but so far I'd say Sheed and barass yes, Main and Karpany no. So not bad but not brilliant

Wasn't Dumont taken before our second pick?
I know we were hoping he would slide but the only player he could've replaced on our list was Sheed.

For the sake of speculation:
- Sheed: will be a quality player without being a superstar. We won't regret trading pick 6.
- Karpany: career will never take off, with his career peak some reasonable WAFL games.
- Barrass: will be super awesome
- Main: won't play a game
- Maginess: will come back from injury and play AFL in 2016
- Powell: will play AFL

Can't remember if we drafted anyone else.

Think you are spot on there but i do hope Karps will show something.

Yeo was the only other addition.

Yeah I really hope Karps can string together some form over the next month.

For me the 2013 draft will be remembered for our trading. Giving up 28 was weak as piss. Trading away our 3rd round compo pick to Gold Coast was also puzzling (but maybe good as we got Barrass). The collingwood deal (where we upgraded their pick in the 40s was also weak). I feel I'm usually realistic about what we can get via trades, and I think this was a poor effort overall.

Sheed will be serviceable and Maginnes will be more so i have high hopes for him

Barass could be anything

Have not been impressed with kapany at all and think will be a flop

Main i don't think will go anywhere either

Of all of them, Karpany is arguably the furthest back at the moment (as far as getting a senior AFL game goes) - it's tough to crack a HFF/FP spot in our team. LeCras and Cripps are pretty much locks ATM and Hill has earned his place so far. Tunbridge and Newman are injured but both have potential there as well as being a bit older, so if one of LeCras/Cripps/Hill is out they are more likely to be the replacements (or McGinnity...). On top of all of this, you have players like Masten and Wellingham rotating through HFF and Yeo even featured in the forward line, not to mention McInnes...

With so little exposed form it's a bit tough to judge him just yet though - could go either way this year, if he can at least put in some good WAFL performances and if homesickness isn't an issue then I think he'll get another year.

You have to include Yeo in the exercise due to the exchange in draft picks.

I reckon Barrass and Powell will be the best of that bunch.

Sheed I'm lukewarm on. He has shown glimpses but looks a bit limited to me.

Karpany I was annoyed we took - then I came around to it - now I'm worried again. Would have much preferred Nick Robertson but let's see how he goes.

Main I really like but I would be surprised if he made it. Still, he looks to be making incremental improvements. He seems to be played as a half back due to his footskills but it would be nice to see him develop into a midfielder. Delist and rookie option.

Maginness I like. If he can tidy up his disposal I can envision him playing a few games for us.

I agree on main, he's got a bit of zip, height and foot skills which are all pretty valuable commodities. I'd be prepared to let him develop for a while longer, perhaps on the rookie list as you mentioned.

Maybe limited but you could also say Patrick Cripps is limited and look at the game he just played. Cripps is taller and a better clearance player atm but Sheed has shown glimpses of his ability in close.

Ok sure.

I think Yeo will be a gun, but never reach true A grade. He is not clean enough to be a top 20 mid or anything like that IMO.

Yeo for 28 was awesome value, but it was a horrible trade as they would have (IMO) accepted 31 at the deadline. The trade sent a clear message that we will blink first in future trades IMO.

I am with you on Main. He has all the attributes to be a good player. He had setbacks earlier, but is now plaing off hb and doing it well. He is coming along nicely ... slowly, but nicely.
Barrass and Powell will be terrific players ... one more preseason and bang!
Karpany is the worry. He needs to find some agro,, or intent as Simmo puts it.
All in all, i am happy with our 2013 picks.

Too early to predict the outcomes on any players, perhaps you can place ceilings on a few of them.

Sheed progressing reasonably well. His inside game is quickly getting up to pace but where he needs to improve to become elite is his outside game and versatility. Getting in space, getting positive of the contest and offering more legs is something he needs to do and at his he has.

Karps. Had a crummy start to the year but showed a hell of a lot last year. Decision making in congestion, disposal by foot and strength over the ball unusual for smalls. If you didn't see that last year you didn't watch him play. Might need to give him a run in the reserves to build his confidence.

Barrass. Injuries are his problem at the moment and he needed to be managed last year and will do so until he fills out. Undoubtable talent though. A savvy defender, strong mark, great kick.

Main is coming on really well from my perspective, and calls to delist him will probably be silenced as the season progresses. Physically he's added substantial mass to his his frame and his game on the weekend decries the decision to leave him in the reserves this long. Can play the flanks and wing well enough, the upside for him has to be looked at in terms of midfield ability. He played their at colts level.

Mags isn't worth talking about just yet. Had a big 2014 where he showed he had a lot to offer the club. 2015 is crunch time for him as a rookie, will no doubt get an extension.

Powell. Physically come on a long way like Barrass but he's not been given opportunities backward of centre this year, which doesn't take advantage of his running and disposal ability. Exposes his lack of contesting marking prowess and needs to get a long way up the ground. Plainly too good for WAFL reserves at either end of the ground though. Probably not worthy of elevation but depending on delistings.

Main and Karpany are the main concerns. From what I've seen, there really isn't much to suggest they'll make it at this stage.
