With Lester pencilled in for a midfield role, I am not seeing that 3rd tall defender or playmaking defender on our list. Yeo isn't far off the 190cm mark but I dunno if he's the right "type". Docherty seems to me to be less of a playmaker and more of a line breaker.

I'm thinking someone of the Sam Fisher mould or even Luke Hodge. Tall enough to play tall if required but a real playmaker from the back half.

Definitely a need for us and is the position I was hoping Wearden was being groomed for. His injury in an out of contract year does make it tough.

Personally, I'd easily give him a one year extension. I think he's shown enough to at least deserve that.

I think I'm moving in here already. Richy's injury was the tipping point.

If it isn't the tipping point, 1 more big injury will be. Just when we need to be getting some momentum you get a soul sucking injury like this. This year has been horrible, after what started as such a promising preseason.

****.
Ing.
Hell.

I hate finding out this shit this way (by reading a post alluding to it before reading the actual news post in Injury Watch, etc). It's like a kick in the guts. :(

Considering our recent luck with what would be high draft picks getting bumped down, what's the bet that Essendon gets stripped of their premiership points and gets a high draft pick? :P

Surely if the AFL does that to any club, they'll need to remove them from the first round or two of the draft.

Yeh someone in the Mackie, birchall mould would be brillant, Pattfull is a solid shut type player but doesnt offer A LOT in rebound
The more you think about it the more areas you realise we need a touch of class.

I think Tickner could fill the third tall defender role pretty well. He would struggle to play small I think but with teams stacking the forward line with height atm he could go alright.

Shades of 2010, in some ways.

At least I didn't get quite as carried away this year as that year.

Exactly what I thought when read the original post about us needing a playmaking third tall, though how has he been playing has he been showing potential to become very good or just serviceable?

think we need a superstar mid to really take us to the next level like cotchin is doing for the tigers or dangerfield for adelaide someone who can win games on the back of his own efforts like dangerfield did against us

And just now, according to Fox Footy Leuenberger is a prime target for GWS when he comes out of contract at the end of this season.

Can it get any worse? Of course it can, much much worse.

especially after we let go of Grundy as welll :P, if this news was legit would it be under trade or do GWS still have allowances from the AFL for recruiting uncontracted players

GWS have two players uncontracted end of this season. Nick Haynes (193cm, HF/wing) and Taylor Adams (179cm, 84kgs, inside mid).

I must confess that I haven't seen much footage of GWS. Any of those guys a good fit for the Lions?

I would imagine that an inside mid is high on our shopping list, and we can always find room for a tall winger/forward with nice skills.

No, they'd have to trade for Leuenberger or get him in the PSD.

Haynes has been underwhelming so far but we were linked to him early on. Adams has been a bit more promising, but neither would be a particularly fair swap for Leuenberger.

Could always pick them up through free agency? Adams sounds good the more I read up about him.

Free agency doesn't work how you think it does, unless GWS specifically delists them. Which they won't.

Wouldn't mind letting Luey go for a mid first rounder + young GWS talent.
I would. Leuy is such an important part of the team. Has the ability to be a top 3 Ruckman in the comp and I truly believe he will be if he remains injury free. Players like Leuy are not players you just let go for a mid 1st rounder and a young player. Very difficult to find top class Ruckman.

Yeah I understand where you are coming from, but personally I'm not a fan of the Berger ever since I saw him a few years he came across as super soft (which is imo an inhibiting factor in him becoming a Ruck/Forward). Leigh Matthews tried to sort that out but never really succeeded.

How is he "super soft"?
Because he can't put on muscle mass??
He still puts his body on the line in every contest, rucks well and is moving well across the ground. Show me an instant where Leuenberger has done a squib and avoided contact.

I wouldn't mind doing leuenberger + our 1st pick for GWS first pick (boyd) + coniglio or something similar.
