PV, that's why there's disagreement - the best available out of the group of Billings, Kelly, Aish, Scharenberg isn't unanimously defined; they all have strengths and weaknesses and it's not easy to split them. Lots of disagreement on who is best available in the 2-7 sort of range.

Well fronkalicious - if you want your big bodied natural footballer, Matt Scharenberg it is! I would be very, very happy if we chose him with pick 4 based on what we can see in the video footage of him. I can definitely see the Goddard comparison, but with more inside game than Goddard could ever dream of.

All I know is that 2 agents, who don't represent him, feel like he will end up the best player in this draft. Both totally confident he could play midfield if required and think he'll be an athletic beast with skills, vision and leadership. I've never seen the kid play live, so I can't pass my own comment, but the opinions i trust think the kid will become a star.

This discussion is good fun but isn't the reality that we don't have pick 2 after Boyd and can control our destiny, at least 2 will be gone by pick 4 and that we'd be pretty happy with any of them?

Absolutely - but at the end of the day we're going to have to decide between at least four of the Scharenberg, Aish, Kelly, Billings, Kolodjashnij and Lennon group, along with other 'wildcards' including Crouch, Sheed and Taylor. While I daresay most of them match a need, it's rare for the top 5-7 players of a draft to all make it, let alone having the same amount of success. Still a crucial decision.

For what it's worth though - I'm enjoying the discussion from more of a 'draft watcher' perspective than from a Bulldogs supporter perspective. I like discussing the potential draftees and hearing others' opinions; not necessarily just a simple "who should we take."

In the spirit of being excited about our recruits I thought to have Bergerman on the wing. And well both he and stronger seem to have beautiful kicking skills... And this team structure is in a few years time. But yer griff will of course still be in the wings/guts.

I also think people on here need to open up there thinking with structures. Bergerman won't be chained into defense. Like I said, he seems to be able to deliver the ball really really well with his racking kick and his vision. I think he could be a imposing combination with stringer and McRae in the midfield.

Well it's just a team sheet. Really guys like Berger, Smith, Dahl etc. will run through the midfield.

So from that link all I can gather is he is a fast, agile inside mid. Sounds good. People will probably complain about another inside mid if we took him but just because he plays as an inside mid in the juniors doesn't mean he will play the same role. If he's fast, agile and a good kick but also good inside and hard at the ball then I'd love him.

I don't think our inside mids are as strong as people think (for the future). If best available at our picks is an inside mid I'd take him.

Obviously not a worry for our first pick, but after that.

If I was Melbourne or St Kilda I'd take Crouch with their first pick, the kids a freak.

Then Wally who people seem to think is stagnating in his development when really he just turned 21 and has been a lock in the 22 most weeks, he will be very good inside the packs too. Smith who is just an animal, Stevens and soon enough Stringer are both guys who are good inside the contest but can also break out of packs and are good on the outside too. Hrovat is another one who is also great inside but good on the outside as well. Think that compares pretty well to any future inside bunch in the comp. if we get another inside mid they have to have another string to their bow too like a Freeman who is extremely fast and kicks goals rather than someone like Crouch who is more your pure inside mid that we don't need.

Yeah I'm talking more about if there was a massive slider to our second pick who was an inside mid, then we should take them. Like Hrovat last year.

We have a very good inside midfield for the future, but I have no problem adding more to it if appropriate.

I'm looking at someone like James Tsitas at pick 38 for example. If he was there I'd be disappointed in us not picking him.

You'd think Sheed would be tempting too, just as a genuine mid with a good all round game, prob one of the safer picks

Yeah, Sheed is the safest pick of the year. Just like with Wines last year, it's an incredibly easy bet that he'll be at least a pretty good player.

Warming to the idea of taking KK at pick 4. Was pretty prolific this year and just looks a really really good footballer. Could easily play midfield in the future too. Reckon he could be a bit like Fyfe (with better disposal) as a midfielder because he marks quite well.

Macrae ended up going exactly where he was predicted to. It was a very evenly-rated top 10. Any of O'Rourke, Toumpas, Macrae, Wines, Mayes, Vlastuin and Menzel could have been interchangeable and no one would have thought anything of it. The Dogs just took what they thought fitted their list-management needs best and took a tall, hard-running mid in Macrae.

Personally, I rated Nick Vlastuin the pick of that bunch at underage level and believe we dodged a bullet with Menzel. The rest is a lottery.

Macrae was a bit like Sheed this year in that he was a pretty safe selection but probably not with the potential to become elite like some of those in that range in my opinion. I had him exactly where we took him, factoring in both talent and risk.

I liked Plowman but not as much as others. I had him outside the top ten (13th or 14th I think?) on my ratings but expected him to go top ten. Top three I never would've guessed and I still think it was a dumb selection for GWS.

I think there was a bit of talk about them taking Stringer or Menzel for a little while but it obviously didn't amount to anything. I can't speak for them. Stringer could've gone #1 if he wasn't injured but he was a risk. Who knows where he would've gone if we didn't take him - but I'm glad we did.

For most of the year it was a clear Whitfield, Toumpas and then...far out I don't remember, someone help me out.

He'll be a very solid player but I still disagree that he'll be elite. He has an uncanny ability to find space where there is none and that's why I perceived him as a low risk player, but he isn't especially exceptional in any other area. He's also very one-sided and until I see that change it's unlikely I'll change my mind.

I sort of see where you're coming from but personally I reckon he can be much much more. His vision and ability to find space is very good so when he puts on some more size with his height he will become a weapon inside the contest. The majority of his kicks are weighted perfectly too, while his kicking can be a little hit and miss at the moment I think he has that next step in him that can take it to elite. Just needs to get a bit more consistent with it because some of his passes are perfect. Can kick goals too and what he had done in his first year with the body he came to the club with was pretty amazing. I think he will be an elite player eventually IMO.
