Because ruckmen were shorter than they were now.
No it's because he could jump. Ruckmen in the mid 90's to 00's were mostly above 197cm

I love how Tom Liberatore can be over 10cm taller than his dad but still be considered small.Alright **** it I'm right on the B-train, come on down Bontempelli!! Seriously in a few years were going to have Macrae and Bonts, 2 tall mids who just dance around opponents and can pull off some amazing handballs and then Big Bad Stringer as the tall wrecking ball who will just burst his way through players, to go along with smalls like Libba, Wally and Smith... Good luck afl.
It's a new era immortalmike!! I love how Bontempelli is taller than some of the best full forwards we've had in the game yet he's an athletic, agile midfielderI love how Tom Liberatore can be over 10cm taller than his dad but still be considered small.
Cheers for the update - no Bontempelli is interestingSorry to intrude guys - but the Hawthorn Head Recruiter was on SEN, and thinks that the top 10 will go like this:
1. Boyd
2. Kelly
3. Billings
4. Aish
5. KK
6. Schaz
7. Lennon
8. McDonald
9. Salem
10. Freeman

You're welcome here anytime mate, you know that.
No Bontempelli at all is interesting. It almost looks like how the draft would go if Bontempelli slipped through to Carlton, switched Salem and Freeman, and changed Lennon with McCarthy.
Why? Richo was 197cm and nearly won a Brownlow playing off a wing. Bontempelli is a midfielder, regardless of height.
I was only just clinging on to it though, now I'm right on boardnice try...pretty sure you've been on the Bonts-train for weeks now! ha ha but I think like me you've also been happy with Aish, Billings, Berger, and KK too - but now I think I really want Bonts the most!

I think at the moment we have an extremely good core of young talent, in all parts of the ground. But besides a few we don't really have many young match winners or absolute superstars, I think in this draft we can afford to take the gamble. Now before someone inevitably hauls out that hoary old chestnut ..."high risk for high reward", please note/consider the first two words ...HIGH RISK !
Why the hell would you take it if it is totally unnecessary. Gamblers anonymous, and various rehabilitation centres are full to overflowing with folks that thought that was a smart philosophy.
The majority consensus before the last few days revelation that we were "into him", was that his draft ranking while highly variable and subjective, usually fell into the 7-17 sort of range. When most of the "experts" [ Dalrymple included] have suggested that the top end of this crop is elite, why would we look outside the top 4-6 to pluck another player. It simply does not make sense to me.
Call me old fashioned if you like Igloo, but I just can't buy that. If at 196-7cm a player can beat the very best midfielders in the land at their own game, he would be one of the all time freaks of nature, and the odds against that would have to be astronomical.
As I have said, I am not against us having Bonts on our list per-se, what I am struggling with is taking him at P4.

Not bad, I'm just not sure if he's what we need really at all.Turner is a 180cm competitive midfielder with a fierce attack on the ball and good skills.
Both clubs will also take multiple selections to next week's rookie draft.

Also said he played as a Small Forward and Defender. Depends on how fast he is if he is lightning on his feet and has good foot skills then I'd say he is the smokey at 60.
