No it's because he could jump. Ruckmen in the mid 90's to 00's were mostly above 197cm

I don't remember back that far I'm still only a baby :p

Alright **** it I'm right on the B-train, come on down Bontempelli!! Seriously in a few years were going to have Macrae and Bonts, 2 tall mids who just dance around opponents and can pull off some amazing handballs and then Big Bad Stringer as the tall wrecking ball who will just burst his way through players, to go along with smalls like Libba, Wally and Smith... Good luck afl.

I love how Tom Liberatore can be over 10cm taller than his dad but still be considered small.

Sorry to intrude guys - but the Hawthorn Head Recruiter was on SEN, and thinks that the top 10 will go like this:

1. Boyd
2. Kelly
3. Billings
4. Aish
5. KK
6. Schaz
7. Lennon
8. McDonald
9. Salem
10. Freeman

Cheers for the update - no Bontempelli is interesting

nice try...pretty sure you've been on the Bonts-train for weeks now! ha ha but I think like me you've also been happy with Aish, Billings, Berger, and KK too - but now I think I really want Bonts the most!

You're welcome here anytime mate, you know that.

No Bontempelli at all is interesting. It almost looks like how the draft would go if Bontempelli slipped through to Carlton, switched Salem and Freeman, and changed Lennon with McCarthy.

Cheers mate - if the word about Richmond being interested in Zak Jones is true, looks like he could fall through to our pick.... but I won't get my hopes up (just yet!).

Why? Richo was 197cm and nearly won a Brownlow playing off a wing. Bontempelli is a midfielder, regardless of height.

Call me old fashioned if you like Igloo, but I just can't buy that. If at 196-7cm a player can beat the very best midfielders in the land at their own game, he would be one of the all time freaks of nature, and the odds against that would have to be astronomical.

As I have said, I am not against us having Bonts on our list per-se, what I am struggling with is taking him at P4.

The majority consensus before the last few days revelation that we were "into him", was that his draft ranking while highly variable and subjective, usually fell into the 7-17 sort of range. When most of the "experts" [ Dalrymple included] have suggested that the top end of this crop is elite, why would we look outside the top 4-6 to pluck another player. It simply does not make sense to me.

Now before someone inevitably hauls out that hoary old chestnut ..."high risk for high reward", please note/consider the first two words ...HIGH RISK !
Why the hell would you take it if it is totally unnecessary. Gamblers anonymous, and various rehabilitation centres are full to overflowing with folks that thought that was a smart philosophy.

I was only just clinging on to it though, now I'm right on board :p really, like you, I'll be happy either way come tomorrow night but I'm finding it pretty damn hard to go past Bonts now :p

I think at the moment we have an extremely good core of young talent, in all parts of the ground. But besides a few we don't really have many young match winners or absolute superstars, I think in this draft we can afford to take the gamble.

There's always the chance that we rate Bontempelli in the top end of this crop and we rate him as elite?

I'm with you I do not see the need to take such a risk with pick 4.
We could take a risk last year as we had two top ten picks.
Stakes are much higher this year when we dont have a second chance at securing young talent.

if you want a mid - pick the confirmed and best mid with the runs on the board.

Put it this way if we forgo Aish and he turns out to be a gun I will arc up. If we go Aish and Bontempelli turns out to be a gun I will not care nor abuse the club for picking Aish - as on exposed form he was the logical pick at 4 if we were wanting a midfielder.

Great post, pretty much sums up my thoughts.

Most recruiters (from what i've read) rate the first 6 (+Mcdonald) - Boyd/Kelly/Billings/Aish/KK/Scharn/Mcdonald in a different echelon to the rest of the draft/Bonts. I'm not against Bonts (check my post history, was liking him mid season) however at pick 4 his just too risky for me, the other guys are safer picks. Aish would also fit our structure better, his an elite outside midfielder who paired with our inside mids in Libba etc would just see more gain which is why I'm puzzled were most likely going to take Bonts. Everyone is raving about how Bonts is a great guy, amazing work ethic blabla yet Aish is touted as future captain material and has been a consensus top 2 pick since he was 16. Next year is also a KPP draft, which i think everyone on this board can collectively agree we need, so we won't be getting an elite outside midfielder next year with our first rounder.

Im not saying we should take Aish either (although i would) but i would of liked our pick to of come from Aish/Billings/KK/Scharn

Also said he played as a Small Forward and Defender. Depends on how fast he is if he is lightning on his feet and has good foot skills then I'd say he is the smokey at 60.

If he can play as a small forward then I'm liking him a lot more, if he was just a midfielder then I wouldn't be in favour of taking him. But now you ruined the fun if we take him, he's not a "who?" pick because we've heard of him :( :p
