Prefer my footballers not to have come from Scotch, frankly.

Not saying that he would be a good fit, I mean the top 4 that have been talked about (Kelly, Aish, Boyd, Scharenberg) all suit our needs a lot better. I'm just hearing a lot of negativity towards getting Billings, but I don't think he would be a bad pick, especially with his skill set.

But of course if we push him to half back, then he could become a weapon there for us.

The problem is he's not very defensive minded at all. Could potentially be a bit like Higgins in that regard.

But I agree he wouldn't be a bad pick up. Would still be happy, it's just I think most people are pissed off it's been reported we would pick Billings over Aish. I'd be disappointed as well.

That can be taught, especially under Macca.

As for Billings over Aish, I completely agree. I just don't see why we wouldn't take one of Berger/Aish/Kelly. Even though I don't rate Kelly, he would fit us perfectly.

Well as you know I think we definitely will take Kelly or Scharenberg if available. It's more Aish I'm worried about. If we don't rate Aish, I don't know. Billings doesn't seem to make a heap of sense to me and I don't think the club rates him as highly as 4. It makes more sense to me to go after a KK or Taylor who fit us better. And I know the club have some interest in Bontempelli as well and if you read the article on afl.com it seems the recruiters do as well. GWS could go as high as pick 2 with him and Collingwood seem to want him potentially at 6 also. While I'm not a great fan of him, he could potentially be the best player in the draft and would offer the team something totally unique.

Anyway, whatever player the club drafts I'll still back them in even if I don't agree with it.

Does anybody here (that knows more about this batch) have an opinion on who the Demons will grab now they've slipped to pick 9?
I'm intrigued that this years trade/draft decisions could set them up for a decade...or bring them undone. Josh Mahoney stated that the kid they want will still be there at 9.

No Doubt he will be this years Tim Membrey

Darcy Hourigan (SA)

Billings has all the tools to be a great midfielder. He just hasn't had luck this year with injury to build up his engine. One thing I'm not totally sure about is his speed. Although he takes a lot of marks in the forward line, so he must be quick off the mark.

We talk about players complementing each other a lot. For example I have mentioned that Berger and stringer would be great. Well Hunter and Billings would be awesome to have swap between midfield and forward line. That way, we continually have two intelligent and natural footballers combining to cover the forward entry and the final blow side of the game :)

... And then of course we have McRae to help.

I've been on the Billings bandwagon since the beginning. I compared him to Johnson but now that I think about it again, Nathan Brown is probably a better comparison. If we do pick him, I think like Brown, Billings will start on a half back line to get his hands on the ball and use his kicking. Then gradually drift to the forward line and eventually midfield. Hopefully he did some separate testing to gauge his tank.
Also like Brown, I think Billings will prove so effective as a forward, that the coaching staff may leave him there. Not because he is not a gun mid but just because he will be better there than anyone else we have and therefore we are better as a team.
Wouldn't surprise me if StKilda pick him actually which leaves us with Aish.
You normally can't go wrong with dual All-Australians.

Matt Crouch, Dom Sheed or Nathan Freeman will be the three on their list. I imagine that their order will be Sheed, Freeman, Crouch.

The best Billings comparison for me has already been mentioned: Higgins. Great kick, good overhead for his size, excellent vision, hasn't yet transferred into the midfield, poor defensively, doesn't win a heap of his own ball, etc. Their style may not be the same but they are really similar players in terms of strengths and weaknesses.

To set context, I'm not as big a fan of Higgins as others. Even in 2008 when everyone was going nuts over him, I only saw a good player, not a superstar that people were saying about him. IMO Higgins main weaknesses to me are his speed, kicking depth, inconsistent work-rate and tendency to stay off the contest. I see Billings as quicker, better kick, better hands and stays in the game through on ball and off ball positioning.
You could actually use your Higgins description above on Nathan Brown and wouldn't be too far off :p

Logic would dictate we take which of Aish, Kelly and Scharenberg is available. Hope we don't "reach" for anyone, we've had bad experiences in the past with that.

Is didak a fair comparison for billings? Never really a full time mid, but devastating on the left when he gets the footy and kicks goals.
yep and like Didak he is tagged out just as easily.

Not the kind of player you give up a top 5 pick for IMO.

I'd happily give up a top 5 pick for a player like Didak. He was a freak.

I don't mind if we take Billings, as long as it's not ahead of Aish.

Thats a tough one and I'd probably take Aish as well.
I wonder though, since being a famous SA name, whether there'd be constant pressure for him to go back home (similar to Ebert).

Bontempelli, I think we will take boy, big bodied mid, can swing forward or back, gives him a point of difference. One hell of a lot upside to him. A lot of good judges think he will be our pick 4.

hopefully you are right

Hahah sorry I mean pick 4

Was joking :p Key point there is that she used the word "maybe".

But "maybe" we might take Aish. "Maybe" we might take Billings. "Maybe" we might take Bontempelli.

It doesn't mean that much.
