If billings is the smartest and most skilled player in the draft, we take him don't we?

So many mixed reviews on scharenberg. MASSIVE wraps from some inside the game. Then who think he's a bit "meh". Interesting. No one seems to think there's anything "meh" about billings tho.

Defensively needs a lot of work, endurance needs work, can be easily tagged out of the game, when he can't find space he's not overly damaging (which he won't be able to do as easily at AFL level). There you go.

2 draft gurus on here pan the idea. There you go.

Thanks lads
Hahaha not panned - Billings is still probably my preferred option at 4 out of the usual suspects in Kelly, Scharenberg and Billings...

Buuuuut I still think we should take a punt on Lennon.

A good draft in terms of filling holes on our list would looks something like this in my opinion:

1st Pick: Kelly, Scharenburg, Lennon
2nd Pick: Taylor (unlikely to fall this far), Garlett (Pending attitude assesment), Hartung, Dumont
3rd Pick: Battersby, Brown, Thorp, Templeton, Impey, Jay Kennedy-Harri, Harvey
4th Pick: Orazio Fantasia, Jarrod Stokes, Ben Cavarra.

Preference is for us to use pick 22 on Docherty and PSD Crameri, but any of the above players could really suit our list.

Looks similar to what I have at the moment:

1st Pick: Kelly, Lennon, K. Kolodjashnij (If we have Pick 7 like speculated)
2nd Pick: Hartung, Dumont, Sicily, Garlett (attitude assessment)
3rd Pick: Battersby, Brown, Thorp, Templeton, Jay Kennedy-Harris, J. Kolodjashnij
4th Pick: Ben Caverra, Alex Pearce (could go earlier), Brady Grey

I doubt we'll have that second rounder though, If I had to choose only one of these guys I'd have to go with the ones that I've bolded given they are available at that pick. The top three I found rather easy to fill but the last pick was harder had to choose Pearce in the end though would make a hell of a combo with Stringer if they could both play through the middle at 191cm and 197cm respectively it would be scarey for opposition sides trying to find guy tall enough to go with them I can't imagine any team that could deal with something like that in the middle and in the forward arc. I like us going with a group of mobile talls that just run there opponents into the ground so I could imagine a Forward line going something like this could work quite well:

Dahlhaus|||Jones||| Hrovat
Crameri||||Brown|||A.Pearce/Stringer

at one stage you could have three athletic 197cm+ Talls up there which would make lining up on us difficult for teams that lack tall backmen that can run with them, then you have Crameri's marking ability, and the mosquito pack at the toes of these guys to worry about let alone our goal kicking mids

Haha, wow. That's so close, its uncanny. Great minds think alike. Haven't seen much of Alex Pearce. Small forward?

what makes you think that lennon is a better pick than billings? (not disagreeing with you lads, i've got NFI myself. just curious).

Roosy thinks scharenberg is in the mix at pick 2. Quoted as saying any club that trades for it will be getting a quality mid or scharenberg. Interesting.

Wouldn't read to much into it - he was just pointing out that their Pick 2 (if traded) could land someone a quality mid OR Sharenberg - depending on that clubs needs.

Lennon is just the whole package; a complete footballer. He is pretty close to the best kick in the draft (both penetrating and accurate) and has a mix of both inside and outside attributes. He has explosive speed in bursts which aids him in finding space and allowing him to make the right decisions and hit a target every time. He's brilliant in one-on-one situations, good overhead - without giving up ability at ground level - and always gives it his absolute all.

The biggest problem at the minute is his tank. Hasn't played much midfield as yet but apart from his tank has all the attributes to be a very effective inside/outside midfielder who rests forward. There's also been a few moments I've seen where he hasn't given enough defensively when playing up forward, but I think it's mostly attributed to his tank.

Him and Stringer together would be an incredibly formidable combo. I really do think that Lennon will be one of the best out of this draft crop.

Agree with this dannn, he is so versatile too. could run off half back and be a weapon, could play forward and wouldn't be surprised to see him kick 40+ goals in a season and in a few years he could definitely turn into a Griffen like midfielder. Would love him, downgrade pick 4 to 7 for docherty (+ something else obviously) and take Lennon, wow!

sounds a solid plan
..but if he's taken at P4 to P6?
1) boyd; 2) aish; 3) kelly; 4) scharenburg; 5) lennon 6) kolodjadnij
7) = ?

Well what player would you pick at pick 2 that isn't a quality mid or Scharenberg? McCarthy? There aren't that many different options in the frame for pick 2.

Re-watching some champs games. A couple that I feel have slipped under the radar a bit:

Tom Vandeleur - really underrated key defender that will likely play as a third tall at AFL level. He has the pace, agility and leap to go with the mediums as well as the tall forwards, and is very solid one on one. Nice skills too and comes off his man at the right moments. Would be prepared to look at him in the 3rd-4th round.

Clayton McCartney - his attack on the ball and the man is ferocious. Very good to watch. At his height he probably doesn't have the pace to be that really dangerous small option but as a midfielder he could really make an impact. Decent skills, looks quite good overhead and one on one and has good vision. Needs to work on a few things and I probably wouldn't have a look at him but I feel like he deserves a bit more notice that he's being given around the traps.

From the little I've seen Lennon is my favourite too. Even we can't down-trade 4, I'd take him there anyway.

My hope is that we can snare Docherty and then take Lennon instead of Scharenberg but from all reports this seems unlikely to happen.

Haha, wow. That's so close, its uncanny. Great minds think alike. Haven't seen much of Alex Pearce. Small forward?

Alex Pearce is a tall guy who has really impressed from mind he needs some work (mostly strength) but he has run a beep test at the combine of 15.5 which is leaps and bounds ahead of some midfielders in that category, also ran a very good time trial. Named in the middle for Tasmania (during the championships) a few times he appeared in their best a couple of times and played mostly high up the ground.

I'd have Jones and Brown playing deep (around forward 50) and Pearce as the guy covering the ground because of his huge motor (leading up the wings etc) if the forward line is a little big at any stage of a game Pearce has the motor to play on a wing (Moving Hunter or Lennon to the forward pocket). When he plays mid he'd be the ultimate third man up due to his height (Around same height a Liam) the athletic forward combo we'd have would mean teams would find it impossible to go with all three, all day, one would always get run into the deck.

I agree with the extra small being an option here but at the moment Jones is being run into the turf by half year because he has no support, hence Brown (Ruck/Forward) and Pearce (Huge wingman/CHF). I'd delist Greenwood and if someone leaves (Addison) upgrade Goodes or Austin. Rookie a small forward (Anastasio, Caverra, Stokes) and a young mid (Kane Lambert). Then we have 5 rookies and can upgrade one at the start of the year.

This is the way I see things and makes for a good amount of success (Filling list holes) in the draft.
