It's like it matters anyway, he was wet impressive for Brisbane last year.

i agree that both clubs should be happy with their kids, but Macrae deserved to be picked where he was and word was at the time Brisbane would've snaffled him up

Watch the Bulldogs vs Port game earlier in the year. There were a few 1:1s between Wines and Macrae and Macrae won every one of them. Quite easily I may add.
Had to radio that one because I didn't have Foxtel but I'll find a way to watch it!
I think Macrae's going to be a seriously good player in a number of aspects. His composure is Pendlebury-like but I think he can be a more complete player barring injury or any attitude problems.

I haven't scanned back to the start of this thread but all? most? of the posts concern our pick 4. I think pick 42 could be very important and could deliver us another key forward which is still a high priority IMO. If we could snare one of Ben Brown or Mitch Thorp I think it would be a great addition. The former as a tall marking, straight kicking, rucking forward, the latter as a guy who has dominated in Tassie (albeit a second level comp) and who is desperate for another opportunity at AFL. Apologies if these suggestions were raised earlier.

Hmm, I thought I would do some more reading regarding your suggestions...

Ben Brown
21 years old in 2014.
199cm / 98kgs?
http://www.sportingpulse.com/team_i...=192152266&client=1-118-10455-253880-18717710

Originally a ruckman, but has found playing as a forward more suitable to his game. Pretty big year this year, moving from Tassie to the VFL, and kicked 29 goals for the season (from 18 games) for Werribee. That included a bag of 5 (albeit against Coburg who were crap), and three matches with 3 goals (one of which was the Preliminary final). His stats indicate a bit of inconsistency in the middle of the year, but 12 goals in the last 5 games is encouraging. Known for his strong marking, agility and efficient conversion.

I take back what I said before, I would consider this guy at pick 42 if he's available. Didn't realise how young he is, and just finding some maturity now (as we all know KPFs take time) but at 21 could pretty much get game time in 2014. He also seems to be a true FF prospect, and fully developed, would be the right type of player to compliment Liam Jones.

Low risk, high reward selection.

Mitch Thorp
25 years old in 2014.
194cm / 94kg
We all know about his past - originally pick 6 in 2006 (ahead of Joel Selwood) and delisted after 2 years due to a poor attitude. Reportedly turned himself around as he's matured emotionally in the Tasmanian State League, and captained a club (in Bulldogs colours btw) this year, kicking over 50 goals along the way. He is moreso a 3rd forward style player.

At his age, I would probably look past him for pick 42, but if available at pick 60 then would strongly consider. I really like Macca's no dickhead policy, so would need to really show that his attitude has turned around. If all that was ok, then would simply add more potency to our forward line.

Medium risk (if his negative attitude comes back we don't want him around), high reward selection.

The only problem with going for both these guys, is that we would only be getting one 18 year old this draft, being whoever we take at pick 4...

Who knows in terms of being a utility yes......

....I think we all see Stringer one day becoming more of a mid who plays forward and we all hope he can....and Scharenberg is a similar type. The only thing is at the U18 level they have used him a lot as running defender and he was not really left in one position as such which has some wondering if that's an issue. Maybe it is? Maybe he can't play mid for enough time? Neither could Stringer, he still can't. But in time?. I just see the way he plays, how he moves, and just think in 2 to 3 years with development that he will be able to play mid.

Someone on here said a couple of days ago....I can't remember, might have been Dannnnnnnnnn??? but he said you need to look at what the player might become, not so much what he is now. Really it's just what I think, based on limited information and footage of the players I see.

Correct me if Im wrong but didn't Stringer play midfield before he broke his leg?

The Hawks are not an overly tall midfield, but they do have some body size about them. One of the real strengths of the Freo midfield is that fact that they have quality tall midfielders. Amoung them are Barlow 189cm, Mundy 192cm and Fyfe 190cm. We are lucky to have Griffen at 188cm, Macrae 188cm, Stevens 187cm. Stringer is 191cm with the body to match. Crameri is 190cm and there is talk he will get some midfield time next year. The rest are normal size mids around 180 to 185cm....with Hrovat, Hunter, Prudden and Dalhaus as the genuine smalls.

But I reckon we are another brutish tall mid shy of ideal. If Scharenberg can play as genuine mid who swings forward and back then I reckon we have the makings of a top line midfield. I just can't see him lasting to our pick sadly. But the above is why I want him.....

Issac Smith is their tallest at 188cm and 82kg. The rest are under 186cm, but like you said they have body size.

The obsession with height is a bit crazy. We don't need a lot of tall midfielders for our midfield to be ideal. They just have to be good. But we can't go around with a midfield of sub 180cm players. I think our mix in the midfield height-wise is fine, as long as we don't go for another midget. It's the ability to mark overhead that would be good, but that doesn't necessarily mean someone who's tall.

I'd take a good small over a mediocre tall anyday.
Not even Mrs Morton would swap Cale for Hrovat.

Good to see the 'Draft Prospects' on the AFL website continuously get updated.

Anyone else like the look of Ziggie Alwan?

i enjoyed watching him play during the year
could provide a decent swingman for a team but don't think we will be looking at him.
got a few players similar to him.

Re Brown : if this draft is as shallow as we are led to believe , Brown won't be there at 42.
If he is , we must take him. In an AFL system for a couple of years , he could be anything.

Hourigan carrying that baby blubber just makes me want him more.
At 192 he is just a little short, may still grow a cm, but what beast
But more importantly, he is such a natural footballer, running patterns elite, marks well, kicks well, appears to like it physical, ooh yes The Macca's will have think about him long and hard

And if he can get rid of that tyre around his waste he will only get better
Appears to be a fine line whether he will last to our pick 40 and we maybe after a speedster at this pick
But for mine if available I would snag him

Just the sort, in two years time, everyone is shaking their heads why they past on him. Beauty
Of course he needs to show he has the work ethic to get rid of the tyre

Hourigan: 192cm
Pavlich: 192cm
N. Riewoldt: 193cm

Really Keen on Hourigan, Put him in our now top notch development system Superstar in the making :D

Anyone else kind of like Alex Spencer?

Yep. I think he's one of the people who will probably be taken with a late pick who will transfer to AFL really well. Would be happy to pick him up.

Yes spot on.....it's about the quality of the player....but that said if you can get a gun mid who is 190cm with body size......I want us to have an awsome midfield in 2 years....a blend of the shorts....likes of Dahlhaus, Hrovat, Hunter....mediums....likes of Liberatore, Wallis and the talls likes of....Griffen, Stringer, Stevens (Crameri???, Scharenberg???, Bontempelli???).

Imagine being able to mix and match those guys, with rotations only going to tighten, the ability of players to remain on ground as forwards or defenders. Imagine rotating Crameri, Stringer and Scharenberg through the guts complimenting Griff and Cooney. Scharenberg drifts back...Stringer and Crameri Forward. Grant can spend time on a wing too.

Of course Aish would be a great addition to the medium size mids and he can play forward and impact.

I am just not sure Kelly gives us much as a forward....happy to hear thoughts of others on this.

I think you might be over complicating things a little too much. If we think Aish is the better player and is going to be the better player, then take him. If we think Scharenberg will be, then take him. If we think Kolodjashnij will be then take him.

Also I don't think Kelly will be all that good personally, I'm sure he'll be a solid player but not enough to justify pick 4.

Overall I'd be disappointed if height was the man reason we passed on someone/selected someone.

To contradict what I just said, anyone have Kolodjashnij's height? He's one of the players I wouldn't be sceptical in drafting.
