Not to turn this into a Quigley bashing thread but in his first post he explicitly states: "As per usual accept that I do not see a huge amount of these kids (in fact very little) and am making calls on very little evidence. Chances are high that I am overly influenced by particularly kids having really good or bad games when I am watching and I am not getting a true indication of their ability."

You're hardly qualified to do a mock then Quigley, are you? You narcissistic ****. :D

That sets a really dangerous precedence, if clubs start hiding players we may see a draft in 5-6 years time where the best players are all going in the third round.

Or am I over worrying?
Clubs have been hiding players for years. Wouldn't worry. The absolute top liners will always get some attention regardless of where they're from, but it's easy for the interstate clubs to hide those mid rangers.

It doesn't always work out, either. West Coast put a lot of effort into hiding Papertalk in Geraldton, and while he did get to their selection, he didn't last long.

Agree. Plus we hid future stars Prudden (& Redpath).... ;)

.

To be fair, Quigley's phantom drafts are always lengthy, and always offer some opinions that are a bit different to the mainstream.

He does do a lot of research though (despite his proclaimations that he doesn't), and his opinions are based on his own thoughts - not on other people's write-ups.

All in all, I would say his phantom is definitely worth a read.

What I find interesting, is that Aish has slid due to him 'not handling a tag that well'.

Kelly is also an outside mid, but nobody mentions whether he has been tagged, nor whether he can handle it.

He's biased towards the Div 2 players but I actually quite like it. They get next to no notice over here so it's nice to hear about them in a more positive light.

As for the bolded, I quite like that too. There are a few detailed posts on the BF phantom thread explaining why I quite like negative standpoints on draftees which I can't be bothered finding, haha. If you're interested have a look. In a nutshell, though, a kid can have an absolutely elite right boot, but at AFL level it's his poor left boot which is going to be locked onto by the opposition and define him as a player. That's just an example, not the only way to apply it.

Like I said, it's good to get a different viewpoint on the players rather than the cookie cutter approach that a lot of the other mock drafters take. But it does feel like he's being overly negative in a lot of them. Just once I would like a mock drafter to actually hit the middle ground! Is that so much to ask?

I think a lot of people seem to forget that Aish was AA last year as an underage and absolutely tore apart divvi 1 teams like WA. He racked up 25 and had something like 7 inside 50s. Plus he was bloody fearless. I've seen him smack in at the footy too.

A lot has been made of his year this year but he went in very under prepared

Suggest a few here should read Quigley's write up on Aish.

Forgetting all our respecting biases, if you look at all the available evidence, we should be picking one of

Sharenberg, KK, Billings, Kelly or Sheed before considering Aish or Bontempelli

Whilst, I personally prefer KK, I can see that Sharenberg is less of a risk and ready to roll.
we should be picking one of those players before even considering others?

Brett Anderson changes his mind a lot. I wouldn't be surprised if we took Bontempelli, nor would I be too disappointed, but I'll still be a long way from locking it in.

Thinking about not reading Quayle's phantom this year, but I'll no doubt run into it somewhere on here, so resistance is futile :p

My guess is if we take MB over Aish he must be a dynamite kid.

Bontempelli reminds me of simon cox. Anyone else old enough to remember him?
i remember him although i was youngish when he was playing. wasn't overly athletic though was he? Raking left foot though

I rate Derek Hine as one of the best in the business and if he was going to jump on Bontempelli at 6 then that fills me with a bit confidence if we pick him.

Can someone sell bontempelli to me?? I just don't see it.

Clean skills, good mark, super composed, plays inside and out. Aish is a better pick, but I wouldn't be upset about getting Bontempelli. He'd fit our side very well getting it off guys like Libba and Wallis on the inside.
Needs to get involved in the play more is probably his biggest downside, but if he's getting fed the ball I think it could be worked on fairly quickly.

Good lord what 18 y/ o handles a tag well?
Ryan Griffen has taken until his mid 20's to shake a tag!!
Utter nonsense .
This whole Bontempelli is younger than the rest of the draftees, is irrelevant as there all in the same age bracket.
Derek Hine is on record as saying players who play senior footy are players they look at more favourably , and that is'something the two SA boys have done.
Lots of red herrings and smoke and mirrors are thrown out there by some clubs and we have to pick the best player available. No ceilings , needs, no reaching

I swear multiple mock drafts have him going to the Pies.

If you look at all the recent ones, Bontempelli has slipped as far as Carlton.

The Bontempelli love goes in cycles now. First it was "who?" then it was "This man is the greatest player!" then it was "Eh I'm not sure, he didn't perform that well and was incredibly inconsistent", then it was "He has the potential to become Scott Pendlebury, he could be the best from his draft class!" Now it's more along the lines of "He's a risk, he could be anything, but he could just as well be a complete flop" which is closer to the mark.

Geez that's not a good sell.
I don't remember him well, but always thought of him as a guy who was just making up the numbers.
Lacked a bit of intensity right?
