Isn't Aish younger than the rest of them though as well?? So maybe his spurt is still to come?

Haha, you can look at it that way. I think more likely he has stopped growing earlier than others. 184-185cm is a good height for a midfielder though, so I'm not too concerned about that. Whether he can put on weight would be a bigger issue than his height I reckon.

It seems to be either Bontempelli or Aish, and word is that we're cooling on Aish and heating up on Bontempelli.
Yes we were burning a flame for AIsh, but that might have turned to ash. Others are now getting top billings, like Kelly and the gang, whilst the Berger has been flipped there are others we are going bongo for. Manuel is confused and says "K? K?" ......While Sylvester says, "I taught I saw a tweety Boyd"

He did he did!

Interesting article on Conlon for those interested:

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2013-11-16/drafts-man-of-mystery

CAMERON Conlon has the all the attributes of a first round draft pick.

He stands at an imposing 198cm, can leap like a flea off a wet dog, has a strong pair of hands, deft touch in the ruck, and is accurate in front of goal.

The only problem? Thanks to an untimely run of injuries, he hasn't played a single game of football in almost 18 months.

It is for that reason that the big Victorian is one of the unknown quantities of next week's NAB AFL Draft, with recruiters faced with a serious quandary.

Do they use a speculative pick on Conlon now, knowing the pay-off could be huge but not sure how fully his fitness and form will return?

Or do they play it safe and wait 12 months, aware that a strong 2014 season could see him priced much higher at this time next year?

Almost all of the later mock drafts ive been reading today have us taking Bontempelli, seems like a huge reach to me and i hope we take Aish. If we don't take Bontempelli people have him falling to as low as 13. Im starting to get a Howard feeling!

Howard was a thrid/rookie in most peoples estimation, it was just us and Adelaide that had him as top two rounds pick. No one ever said he had the potential to be the best player in the draft like at least one unknown recruiter has with MB.

Scott Clayton? :D

All of the mock drafts last year had Stringer going at pick 17 if we didn't take him, talk like that doesn't concern me.

But Stringer was talked about as pick 1 before he broke his leg, that's a completely different scenario.

Can anyone remember back to 2005? Was Pendlebury thought of as a top 5 pick? I'm preeeetty sure he wasn't, was he?

I think most had him as a mid first-rounder but I'm not 100% certain.

I don't really have a strong opinion on who we should pick.

While I don't mind Bontempelli, taking him at 4 is definitely a stretch. Really, considering the position we're in, I think we should be taking a more proven player like an Aish.

Should we select Bontempelli, and he doesn't come good, then I think it's time up for Simon Dalrymple. He's already made one huge mistake in taking a player too early (Christian Howard), it would be disgraceful if we made the same mistake again.

I won't complain if we get him though. I just don't have any strong preferences atm.

Pendles was rated a secound rounder around 20-30 iirc
my point was that taking Bonts at pick 4 is reaching when we have a much safer option in Aish who is a better mid right now, we would be taking Bonts on his height and "potential" instead of the better footballer.

Huge 4th quarter against Vic Country

Very exciting player to watch as he takes huge strides as he runs and has good penetration on his kicks
Has the frame to be a giant and I am hopeful if we recruited him that we would teach him to attack more contests as in all the games I've seen him play, he has sort of hung at the back of a pack and waited for the ball to come to him

Damn kid can fly to

Kid tall enough to be a KPF but instead plays elsewhere. Super light frame. Silky. Grant II?

Chris Grant - you've said a few times that your source thinks we're cooling on Aish. Have they said anything about why? I'm really curious to know what it is that's caused this slip. He's gone from being one of the best of the draft for the past two years to being someone who may slide to god knows where. Is there a legitimate reason or do people just get bored with the same prospect being at the top for so long? :P

I've been having a look at a few potential choices for #42, Tom Vandeleur could be worth looking at, haven't seen his name mentioned a whole lot. Thinking we could probably look at Conlon/Brown in the PSD.. thoughts?

^ Also for those who haven't seen Vandeleur he is a 193cm 90kg defender, with pretty decent athletic qualities, seems to read the play fairly well too, missed the first half of the championships with an ankle injury

You're not alone, has been mentioned a few times throughout the thread. He's a funny one. I'm a big fan, but for me he falls into that awkward range where 42 is likely a bit too early but someone will take a punt before 60.

Admittedly I only watched one highlights package, but what are the gaps in his game? he seems to have a fair bit of upside but if 42 is a bit of a reach then what is the knock on him?

He's just not very good one on one. He's very athletic, uses the ball exceptionally well and reads the ball brilliantly in the air, but he'll never defend those big key forwards. I reckon he'll be a solid third tall at AFL level, giving that drive from defence as well as a bit of coverage on the smaller, more athletic guys, but I wouldn't be backing him in big one on ones. I also don't see a huge scope for improvement.
