If you've got a pick in the top 25 I'd say you're quite likely to get a good player who'll step up but past that it's chook lotto........There's a few players I like here and there but it's definitely not as strong from 20-100 as it was last year from my perspective.

where would an issue-free garlett sit in the draft pool? it seems as though his game would fit nicely into our needs. his exposed form seemed pretty consistent in the WAFL.

as it is 'a bit of a lottery' to spot talent after 25 or so, why not punt on the talented kid with a few rough edges? you'd be punting on a less talented kid overcoming deficiencies any way. granted, personality and social issues are tricky to turn around - but it was only this time last year our B&F runner up was shovelling soil for $17 an hour.

if j.grant left for brisbane, i'd love for us to take the punt with that 2nd rounder (and would be happy enough to use 22 if crameri goes to PSD)

Issue free, top ten quite easily and potentially top five. With issues, anywhere from a 2nd rounder to not at all.

He would fit in very nicely, but I don't expect us to take him. I'm feeling more and more like we only plan on taking two players in the draft (then one or two rookie upgrades). 22 will likely go for Crameri, and our fourth rounder will be involved in a Darley trade you'd think if the rumours are true. We won't take Garlett at 4 and if we've really told Brown we'll select him if he's available that's our second pick.

From what I've heard, he's allergic to tackling. So I don't really see how we would get a game for us.

We were screaming out for a ruck/forward for most of the year, i think it's still an area that we require. If Brown can fill that role(i know f*** all about him, being from WA) he'll be a very welcome addition to the list.

thanks for that, dan. more than happy for the darley to come through in exchange for a later pick.

regarding brown...i think we've had our best ruck/forward playing fullback this year (don't get me wrong, he's playing the role well and was an asset to the side). i'd like to see us find another KPD to pair with talia (this year or next) and eventually have campbell ruck and roughead relieving from the fwd pocket.

While i somewhat agree, i think it's alot easier to get a ruck/forward than it is to get a 10 year FB as Roughie will be.

I agree a ruck/fwd would be a good idea for us with a later pick (e.g. Brown).

I also don't think we will take Garlett. Apparently lacks accountability (poor defensively) and hasn't worked very hard to build his tank so is stuck in the forward half. Doesn't sound like a Macca type, even before you add in the off-field issues.

Potential scenario:
Pick 4 - Aish (or Scharenberg if he's gone)
Pick 22 - Trade for Crameri
3rd round pick - Ben Brown
4th round pick - trade for Sam Darley

I'd go home happy with that

I reckon you got it in one right here. There's a chance Brown could be gone by our 3rd round pick though and then we could grab anyone really. But if he's there this looks like what we'll do.

Or maybe we trade Addo for Darely instead of using our 4th pick. I understand Addo can walk without a trade but it might be a convient arrangement for both parties - as GWS will not be using a 4th round pick.
We wouldn't be using our 4th round pick either so it's inconsequential. We'll have pick 4, our 3rd round pick, and then upgrade Goodes.

Quite a few draft experts think brown may not even be selected until the rookie draft so id be surprised if we used pick 38 on him to be honest.

The talent is thin after pick 25 and there's very few tall forwards available. In this year's draft we're gonna see a lot of players being rated differently. To my knowledge we are keen enough to use a main list spot on him.

So since Campbell is seen as a future number one ruckman
where does Brown fit
key forward?
Yep, if we got him it would come down to which one out of him or Cordy makes it as that second ruck/KPF. Think it would make for good competition personally with both being great kids who would be constantly trying to better one another.
Pretty damn similar players, agile, quick, great skills for a big guy, play same role (although some might argue that Cordy doesn't really show those attributes now, he did when he was drafted :p)
I would love him at a late pick because if Campbell is going to be our number 1 ruck then we are really relying on Cordy as that 2nd ruck. And we all know he is definitely no certainty to make it.

Quite a few draft experts had never even heard of Prudden - in the end only one recruiter has to rate him there for him to be taken.

would like a forward line like this in the future:

Crameri, Stringer, Dahlhaus
another small forward, Jones, Brown

Brown would be a ruck/forward, the other small could be someone between 170-180 but they need speed and need to tackle, a rookie like Anastasio if Austin or Goodes is upgraded would fit in quite nicely as he is deadly at ground level and chases like a maniac, his height would not be a problem with Jones,Stringer, Crameri and Brown all being capable marking players, him and Dahl would cause our forward line to become a pressure box once it hits the deck and the marking talls would cause headaches themselves in the air. I like guys that run both ways, use the ball elitely and get a lot of it (for a small forward) hence my choice there. Others may have different opinions though.

After re-watching the U18 championships I have the following observations,

  • For mine after Boyd (Who I am yet to see, but I'll take everyones word for it.) the best player in the draft is clearly Lewis Taylor, could care less that he's 175 cms, his balance is amazing, he's tough, nimble, the skill he has of either foot is Aka-like and has no quit, the game against Vic Metro was particularly impressive how he kept at it. I know its a big risk to take someone so small with a top five pick but a few inches doesn't make Kelly, Aish and Billings better players.
  • Really not sure about Kelly, aside from his endurance ability I don't see much there there upon further review, thought he had more of a burst and better footskills, 30 plus disposals in the SA game but not many of them impacted it.
  • Are we sure Jack Billings isn't just a small forward?
  • Aish was impressive when he got it, wish he would take the game on a bit more.
  • Freeman is interesting to me, had read that he needs to work on his disposal, but in the VC game it seemed more than adequate. Not saying we should take him at 4, but at least look at him, his speed is something we don't have in our Mids.
  • I get why Bontempelli is so tantalising to people.
  • Would stay away from Ben Lennon, has some Josh Hill-esque body language on the field.
  • Luke Dunstan is criminally underrated.
  • So is Zac Jones.
  • Its a shame he can't be drafted till next year cause Clem Smith is exactly what we need, a tough fast kid that takes the game on, would love him.
  • Matt Scharenberg will be a really good AFL player, he does everything really well has great composure, I'm not sure though how much upside he has, seems a touch slow, still really like him but you have to look at a players negatives as well as his positives.

I thought every club had to take at least 3 picks in the draft not including rookie upgrades . if we use pick 4 and 22 on Crameri we still need to use our third and forth rnd picks in the draft and then if we elevate rookies with our 5th or 6th picks.

It is including rookie upgrades. So say we take Scharenberg with 4, Ben Brown with 38ish, then use 56ish to upgrade Goodes, that's enough.

Thanks timtamWB for that. Do we have no interest in Thorpe.

We've told Brown that if he's available at our pick then we're going to take him. I haven't heard about any interest in Thorp but we could be, who knows? If I were a betting man though, i'd bet that Thorp will get taken before Brown, so I don't think we're going to pick him up.
