I don't see it really. Pick whoever's left out of Kelly/Aish/Berger/Boyd. If someone before us picks Billings, well then pick them in this order: Boyd, Aish, Berger, Kelly.

It's interesting to hear the difference of opinion on Scharenberg. I'm of the opinion he plays in a similar fashion to that of Enright. He's not particularly fast, but he reads the play very well, spreads very well and sets up attacks coming out of defence. Plus I have confidence that he can push into the midfield in time as well. I'd be very happy with him as I would be with Kelly and Aish as well.

For me he shows all the attributes of a young David Mundy. Just remember that this time last year there were some on this board who wanted us to avoid picking up Jake Stringer at all costs...

So what has caused the blow out in expectancy with Aish ? Doesn't fit needs to teams with 1-3 ? Attitude? Deep &dark mystery? Mischievous journalism ? He has Pattonitis knees ?

It all seemed simple at #4. Needs/availability said either Kelly or Berger. Now, it's as clear as mud. If he IS still there at #4 do we take him (under best available mantra), or another who we consider "best available", or do we punt to fill a need ? Would seem awkward knocking back an opportunity to take the kid lauded as the "best young mid in the country"

Well I hope we do, I just have this awful feeling in my stomach that we won't.

The contested ball is of some concern but no more so then that of Kelly's. Doubt it's injury related as well, he's been back playing senior footy for months now and won a premiership. Fits our needs well. For mine it would have to be something he said in his interviews or something off field related (perhaps he tested poorly in something). If we pass because of his playing ability that would be quite strange.

You're right with the Mundy call, I can see it.

And I'm pretty sure the avoid Stringer at all costs was because of his broken leg. I wasn't super keen because of that, never questioned his talent.

I'd love to get Scharenberg. Really want to have a midfield in 4 years time that boasts 3-4 giants. It definitely is where the game is heading. Stringer is a start. Scharenberg is the next piece.

chris judd had shoulder problems.extending the logic, it's possible aish could have a similar career to him too?
I'm just highlighting the fact that there's more of a risk involved with Aish than there is with Kelly.

I asked gilbert gardiner before on the herald sun chat who the dogs liked at pick 4 and he said they like jack billings alot

Interesting - he had an injury hampered year in some respects but doesn't seem to get enough of the ball for a top 4 pick (granted he uses it well when he gets it).

I think he's a small forward.

I think he's a small forward.
Not necessarily - some have likened him to a Sam Mayes type who also played predominately forward in his u18 TAC year - Billings averages far less disposals though, despite descriptions of how good he is overhead, and the talk seems to be how he will make the transition to midfield.

Comparisons seem to be with Bartel but I remain unconvinced

I have no idea about who we will pick but Macca does seem to lean towards players that are first and foremost footballers rather than athletes. Billings is a very natural footballer.

The thing that people need to realize is that the journo's typically have no idea what they are talking about. Remember last year when we were big on Wines, Menzel and Simpson? Then apparently Stringer was going to slip to Geelong at 16?

The clubs aren't in the business of releasing to the media who they are taking in the draft.

Gilbert Gardiner saying that we like Billings couldn't be any more of an understatement. Of course we like Billings, who doesn't? The kid is a star, but does that mean we are going to take him at pick 4? At this stage, if everything goes accordingly, probably not. I can't see it.

Talk in the media is all opinion and none of it holds any more weight than mine or yours. Typically, most journalists are bumbling idiots who were in the right place at the right time. Just because some flog who was lucky enough to do enough work experience to score a job at the end of his arts/journalism degree says something, doesn't make it true.

So the general concern on billings being if he is able to transfer into the midfield or being a permanent smallish fwd, but until his interview with that twoomey bloke (however you spell it) i didn't realise he was managing injury for most of the year...
Could this explain his lack of game time in the midfield ?

Watched a few 18s champ games the other day.. Even though bontempelli didn't dominate.. He did all the right things... From everything I hear about him in the tac etc he seems to be dominating later in the season which shows he is a player that grows in confidence the more he plays in a certain league etc.. And he is a bottom age player.. I really hope we get him.. He is 192cm but runs like he is shorter than that.. He has proved he can play in the midfield.. You could also put him off half back etc.. Versatile player.

From what I saw I didn't really notice anyone grabbing the game by the scruff of the neck.. There was no absolute stand out.. Obviously this is excluding boyd..

And from what I've seen of Scharenberg.. I can not see him playing midfield at all..

Someone please tell me it's not possible, Kelly or Aish could end up a Tambling or Ray type.

Where do u rate him in the draft pick wise? 10-25?

TBH I'm not exactly someone who knows a lot about the draft its self.. like who to put above who.. im only commenting based on the national champs which ive seen combined with the things ive heard others in the 'know' say and who pay more attention to it.

All I can say is.. I love the way he plays.. I can just see him making it at AFL level.. He will probably go 20-35.. but yeah thats my take on it..

I've got serious quarries on Kelly. I don't think he's got the skill people think he does nor the pace, but is probably a lot harder worker and better person than those two.
