Doesn't exactly fill a need but he's a good player. Think Daniel Cross; not the most naturally talented but makes up for it with sheer work ethic and courage. Somewhere in the 20-30 range but may go earlier.

Disagree. Fills a need as a running defender or can lock down on an opponent. He would be a better version of Darley IMO.

I compare him a bit to Brandon Ellis from Richmond.

Yeah I can somewhat see that. Personally I just think he's a much more natural inside mid than he is a defender and probably doesn't have the skill set to play as a permanent half back in the AFL from what I've seen.

Jones wouldn't be available at our second pick anyway, and I think there would be better options if he was. Battersby is one I like a lot more for that role than Jones.

Can't say I agree at all. What are your concerns?

Battersby would be ok, but is pretty small at 177cm and wasn't as good in the champs games as Jones IMO.

I just think he gets caught out in between offense and defense too often and comes off his man at the wrong times. In the midfield he can win his own ball and distribute it beautifully (or chase down and lay a tackle), but at half back he can really get too caught up in the attacking side of things and it sometimes leaves his man goal side. At AFL level he'll likely be playing on those aggressive and dangerous smalls and I think he could get into a little bit of trouble. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying he's defensively poor; he can play a very good lockdown role and also launch an attack from the defensive 50 but I just think his instinctive switch between the two isn't quite where it should be for a player like him. I wouldn't be at all disappointed if we got him, I just have a few preferred options there. That's mostly because I don't see him off half-back/in a back pocket long term though. Can see him being a Macca type.

His size isn't a huge issue for me as I'd have him playing on smalls anyway; playing the three talls in Roughead, Talia and Morris (or his future replacement) allows Young to play on a medium type and also give us that rebound. Battersby can take a small and pair up with JJ to distribute it out with some pace and skill. He's only about 3cm shorter than Jones isn't he?

6cm shorter according to the combine results. I agree he needs to find more of a balance in his attacking and defensive games, but I think you're over exaggerating it a bit as well. I think he tries to cover for others or help out his team mates and can misjudge the situation which can be why he gets caught out a bit. Anyway plenty of U18 player's are known to be over attacking yet have developed a good defensive side. With more experience he should be able to read the situation a lot better and he has the right mind set/attitude, application and a good footy brain to do this. I think he could well be available at pick 26 by the way.

I see your point on Battersby. I'm just generally not a fan of having two player's below 180cm. Plus his work in the champs wasn't that great. I mean he was good, but not great. I never came away really excited by him and the player's he was on I didn't think were that great. Personally I wouldn't use pick 26 on him, for our 3rd round pick yes. I know there's others that disagree with me like yourself and Chris25 has talked up his midfield work but I just haven't seen it.

Oh and regarding Young, I kind of question whether he's reached his ceiling. While I know he's young, some player's develop sooner then others and I wonder whether this is the case with Young. I don't see where the big improvement is going to come from to make him a regular in a finals side. Does anyone think this too?

Video up of all the draftees on the afl website.

Just checked out Cutler & Miller, would love to get either at 26.
I really hope we're ruthless bastards and take Crammers in the PSD.

Miller looks to have a nice turn of pace, does anyone know how he tested at the combine?

I get where you're coming from. I think he will develop his defencive game with more matches and become a solid contributor, but I agree that he lacks the tools to improve much beyond that.
Think Ryan Hargrave early 2000s vs late 2000s.

Anyone think we might pick up a Billings over a Scharnberg or Aish because of the go home factor?? Since both McCartneys have been at the club we haven't recruited a single player through draft outside of Victoria. Just a thought with some news we are into Billings. I'd be happy with any three of those.

Tom Young was a NSW scholarship selection, played junior football in NSW.

I don't believe the go home factor would come under a heap of consideration unless something was said in in an interview. We are building a strong, tight culture. McCartney said it himself, whoever comes to the club I'll treat them like my own kid. I'd back our coaching staff and playing group to make them feel at home no matter where they came from. We should draft whoever we think is the best available/best fit for us regardless IMO.

Don't forget Callan Ward left and he lived just down the road.

Not real well, but he only did the jumps, agility and 20m sprints. Assume he had an injury.

Oh man that's a much bigger difference than I thought. They don't look that different but maybe I'm just a bad judge of height, haha.
Oh yeah absolutely, I wasn't meaning that it's something that can't be fixed, it just takes a bit of experience in the right system. I'm just saying that he looks more natural in the midfield where the game is more or less on his terms, and I think that's where he plays his best footy long-term. He's actually a very similar player to Prudden from what I've seen - both hard at the contest with great vision and an awesome kick and can play both half back and midfield despite looking more natural in the latter. He could well be there at 26 but I'd be surprised to be honest. Looks like we won't have 26 at the draft anyway.

I'm by no means as keen on Battersby as some others are, I just think he has a higher ceiling than Jones. I've got Jones ranked higher - I just like Battersby more for the role we're looking at. Midfield talk is speculative at best and I haven't really factored that in.

I can kinda see your point. He doesn't have an awfully high ceiling from my perspective but he's a highly effective extra man behind the contest. He works into space magnificently and at the right time and can play much smaller than he is if need be. Defensively he's never going to be a close checking tall defender but his rebound is something that's really valuable, especially when we play a seven-man defense. You can't teach his ability to work himself into the right places; it's instinctual and something that makes me confident he has a place in the team. It's absolutely an area we need to bring in some depth for though, agree.

Blake Acres has some real impressive highlights for me, though I am not suggesting we will take him with our first pick

Same with Cameron Giles, very agile for a 195cm player; playing as a KPD

Our two top South Australian picks, Cooney and Griffen, stayed despite bigger offers elsewhere.

Our local boy, Ward, took the cash.

I want us to draft the best player available, period.

Where do the draft watchers see Jay Kennedy-Harris going in the draft order?

Just watched his highlights and he seems to have great pace, vision and foot skills.

To Fremantle as a Father/Son I'm pretty sure

ahh. cant wait to see who we end up drafting. I really hope Bontempelli falls to us. I think melbourne need more midfield grunt, same as St Kilda. GWS is our only worry.. thats if they rate him. Those highlights on the afl website looked very impressive. same as Acres.

Falls to us? Bontempelli will definitely be there for us to select, it really depends whether we decide to pick him. He's gone missing in games a lot, and while he has a lot of potential, there's a reason that he's not a definite top 10 pick. He's not consistent, and he plays some bad games. And at AFL level it's only going to get harder for him.

Don't trust highlights. I could probably put together a damn impressive highlights reel of Tambling.

I see so much potential there.. I have a feeling he will go in the top 7. He would compliment our midfield nicely.

Miller strained him hammy in the 20m so didnt test much at all

I've love to get him but I can't see how :(

Got a feeling that West Coast will take him if they miss out on Sheed.

Lewis Taylor's video:

Now this is what you call a player with a high floor and a high ceiling. Has the footy brain of a 30 year old, loaded with pace & agility and a great kicker of the ball. I still think he's the most talented footballer in the draft along with Aish.

On an unrelated note, these videos from the AFL Site are absolute shite. The audio is either silent or horribly out of sync in all of them, and sometimes they don't even show the right player (Lewis Taylor stops appearing in the above video after the 2:40 mark.

I have to bow to your expertise GrandBlue because I have only seen the highlights of the boys that could come our way, but to be honest there was not a lot about Aish that gets me too excited. Kelly I have a similar concern with. Anyone else feel the same ?
I think I can see why Melbourne were happy to trade away their second pick.
Taylor I agree with you , looks a beauty.
Acres, Bontemtelli, Hartung ( next Boommer Harvey ? ) Sharenberg all have a point of difference that to me will translate into good AFL players.

I am now hoping we miss on Kelly and Aish.
