It was 'fingers crossed we can get Aish' this time last year, now that we're a good chance to get him everyone is making excuses not to pick him.

Not me.

You obviously think we will be going backwards next year then?
On talent/ability/how we play? No.

On ladder position? It's definitely a possibility.

Playing better doesn't necessarily imply a better ladder position.

Interesting Knightmare has written up his 2014 preview and he thinks Hugh Goddard is a Jack Watts type, good athlete but doesn't think he's one to take games by the scruff.

I kind of agree with him there. I've seen a couple of his game and he doesn't seem like he does too much. He'll stand around the goal square and somehow end up kicking quite a few goals, but he just doesn't seem to stand out or really be all that influential.

McCartin on the other hand seems to get involved much more, running all around the ground, taking marks all over the place, and if he's not kicking a goal himself, he's setting someone else up.

Petracca will be an interesting one next year. Only 185cm so not a KPP. He has some incredibly dominant games sometimes though. Was at the Ranges vs Falcons prelim final game and he absolutely blew me away with his performance. Took contested mark after contested mark. My friends and I were thinking "holy crap, who the f*** is this kid?"

not at all
they can't all be #1 pick so
we'd have to at least be some sort of chance of getting one of them
because we won't be going THAT high up the ladder
10th maybe at best, any higher would be pretty amazing

yeah we are still at a stage where we have to sacrifice a few wins to get games into youngsters that aren't necessarily in our best 22 yet. And a lot of teams just above us on the ladder would consider this year as underachieving so we aren't going to just leap frog a bunch of teams. Best case scenario we finish 8th (still a decent pick) but more likely in the 12th sort of area.

Some recruiters were saying this time last year, Aish was a safe bet for pick 1-2 and he might not get picked even till pick 5...
but yeah, I think if we can address getting the best available for our pick next year and they happen to be a KPP or a HBF that would be brilliant because I think our biggest holes are our KPP stocks and HBF/Wingmen for the future
but don't worry, I am only babbling on because I am drinking because it is Halloween

Let's pick up the best player at that pick
James Aish
No reaching, no project players, no players with upside. Best player at that pick

Macrae and stringer were arguably a tad speculative last year to be honest. Obviously stringer with the injury. A lot of mock drafts had him going to Geelong at pick 16 if we didn't take him.

And macrae came from nowhere. He hadn't been a highly touted recruit, and had question marks on his game. Wines and Mayes were proven stars at underage level and we passed on them both. I'm completely happy with those decisions (all 4 will be outstanding afl footballers IMO), but I don't want us taking bontempelli this year if a guys like aish, scharenberg or billings are available.

I'm not so sure on Macrae - rate of improvement is a massive tick for recruiters (Ward was a BP at the start of his u18 year - it was his teachability & rate of improvement that shot him up the rankings).

Stringer was touted as a possible no 1 pick pre-injury - he wouldn't have lasted to #5 without the leg break.

I think Macrae will be the best out of the last draft his upside is massive class and a goal kicker -Wines one trick Pony the 2 boys from GWS struggle the only one the looks the goods is Mayes a gun.

BP? Back pocket?

Wow. That's a massive "Balls On The Line" call. Hope your right.... but I doubt it.

I definately see it - Stringer had all the hype, but Macrae is special. That sidestep and the ability to 'buy time' on the field is something that you simply cannot teach - and few players have it

Macrae is pretty good, I watched him at Torquay last year, first game against men, playing Geelong, 33 possessions, and he has never looked back from that game. I don't know how much footy some of the posters have played, but believe me it is easy lot easier sitting in an arm chair.
Last years draft on performance, all boys were outstanding , Macrae, Stringer, Hrovat, Hunter, all set the foundation for long AFL careers, Prudden before he got injured was terrific also, his game for Williamstown against Collingwood when he killed Luke Ball and had a match winning last quarter, I walked away from Williamstown thinking what a good kid he is.
It is fine to be critical of somebody in the system for 3 years, but first season. Fair go.
This season draft , like I said on a previous post, Macca was keen to take Wines last year. I cannot split Aish or Scharenberg , Scharenberg is ready to go,190 cm 90 kg he fits Macca's profile, he was outvoted on Wines last year, I don't think that
will let that happen with Scharenberg. My footballing friends in SA tell me, they cannot split them. Both great talents.
I think Dogs will take Scharenberg.

I think people get discouraged when it comes to Scharenberg as he seems like a player who will only be able to play half back. We are lacking polish and run through the midfield and I think that is why everyone is jumping on Aish and off Scharenberg as it means we are letting a gun midfielder slip through - even though Scharenberg may be better overall.

Can Scharenberg be that BIG bodied midfielder as well?

Really ? With Brazil & Peru so close. That's it. It's Peru, Argentina & Brazil for me in 2015...scrub Chile..

I'm a roaster so i hope these countries you've mentioned do have better coffee. I'll be visiting the coffee farms for the next couple years in those countries though so should have a few nice cups.
