If Ben Brown and Conlon are both available who is the preference? http://www.afl.com.au/news/2013-10-20/ben-brown

Similar gap. Conlon perhaps higher potential, Brown lower risk.
My preference would be Conlon - but it's not as though they'd be the only two to choose from. Brown, Nankervis, Apeness, Conlon and Harvey (plus a few others I'm probably forgetting) were all still on the board in the BF draft. Conlon's my preference out of all of them but I imagine most feel differently.

Hourigan carrying that baby blubber just makes me want him more.
At 192 he is just a little short, may still grow a cm, but what beast
But more importantly, he is such a natural footballer, running patterns elite, marks well, kicks well, appears to like it physical, ooh yes The Macca's will have think about him long and hard

And if he can get rid of that tyre around his waste he will only get better
Appears to be a fine line whether he will last to our pick 40 and we maybe after a speedster at this pick
But for mine if available I would snag him

Just the sort, in two years time, everyone is shaking their heads why they past on him. Beauty
Of course he needs to show he has the work ethic to get rid of the tyre
Couldn't agree more. Just watched a highlights package of Aish , and Hourigan was on the end of everything.
The guy needs an AFL body no doubt, but I reckon pick 42 he'd be worth the risk.
Aish was very impressive ( I know they show all the good bits) took a couple super gutsy marks in an SANFL game.

Hourigan will be gone by 42, I'd bet my house on that.

The inside footy experts have him going at a late pick, but agree reckon he'll go early.

I'd be very surprised if he lasts past 40. He's too talented and the draft pool is too shallow for him to last that long.

But his skinfolds are poor as well as his endurance. Talented yes, but he has no excuse to be in that kind of poor state. You might be losing your house son.

I like my house :(

I just don't see how he'll last that long. I know his endurance is poor and so are his skinfolds, but his natural talent means he should be selected before our pick. If the draft wasn't so shallow then I wouldn't be saying this. He's gone before our pick in most phantom drafts I've seen.

Natural talent only gets you so far, if your not putting in then clubs will be very cautious. I think he'll get drafted still, but even then I wouldn't be prepared to say he 100% will.

He also plays only in brief spurts. Granted, these spurts are quite good, but players who can only do what they do occasionally always make me nervous. His endurance would certainly play a part in that but you've gotta ask how sure you are that his endurance is the problem. Some guys just lack the ability to put in those consistent second efforts and get themselves in the right positions all the time.

Comment From James
Hey Cal Does it look likely James Aish ends up at the Dogs?

Callum Twomey:
James, He's right in there. I think Kolodjashnij, Billings and Scharenberg still around there though, and maybe Bontempelli. There is some interest in him at pick 4.

Damn you Mr Twomey, that is too many players :p

So basically every player who might be worth pick four is in the mix for pick four.

That's some real good expert opinion there Twomey.
Well, he did rule out Billy Hartung for pick 4, so that narrows things down a bit.

Still cant believe someone in the chat actually thought that we'd take Hartung with our pick.

I'm not keen on Brown at all. Has he ever taken a 1 grab mark?

Ok only saw him play 1 game , so perhaps a fluke , but he marked everything.
The best big man on the ground by a country mile.
And by the way the only thing he has in common with Cordy is he is very tall. Much more athletic and also a better kick.

Well yeah, but that's pretty obvious.

What shits me with Twomey is that he parades himself as an all-knowing draft expert with ties to clubs and recruiters alike, yet there is literally nothing separating him from your general close draft watcher except the fact that he gets into the combine and such. He never says anything that your general draft scoper couldn't tell you despite being such an expert and having such professional links. He's a good reporter but his 'expert' act really grates on my nerves.

Post that in his next chat session, would love to see his response :p

Lets see how Twomey went last year with his predictions...
This is what Twomey, Shifter and Mick Ablett predicted 3 days out from last years draft..

Ummmmmm, I think I will wait till Emma does hers...

Dannnnnnnn you cynic you...love it......seems to me also that there needs to be someone who is prepared to push some boundaries in this area and call it as it is or just give some insight......As much as I like some of these guys.....they all seem to say just about the same things.

Haha - I've got nothing against his perspective on draftees as more often than not he has good opinions. I've got nothing against him personally either. Whether it's him or his editors, or those who run the AFL website, though, there seems to be an aura that forms around him that paints him as a mammoth of the draft watching world, yet he never seems to really have any information short of what you'd get just watching casually.

Agree with your post though. It's rare that any of the draft coverage group disagree with each other and that's just not realistic. Look at the BF draft thread - so much debate and differences of opinion, because that's what it is: opinion. For starters there's NO coverage of weaknesses in draft journalism - everyone in the top 50 are elite footballers and those lower only have minor issues that are easy to work on. Secondly, if a player has a bad attitude or anything like that it'll never come out officially; they focus solely on the positives and it's quite annoying.

Anyway, just thought I'd clarify as my last post sounded like I was taking a weak pot shot at Cal, haha. I like him as a journalist and like his work but regardless of who does it his portrayal as a complete draft expert shits me.

lol....well maybe they got it right.....and the clubs got it wrong time will tell......I am not so much interested in what order they pick....but what insight they have into the players and clubs....in that area I think they lack some honesty.....I reckon they need to be a bit more brutal on the player analysis....this is after all the big time.....big bucks to be had. I also don't think they really look at what the clubs are doing....e.g. Dogs lack KP forward....so let's find one for them one at pick 42......happens every year....it's slack. I reckon there are guys on here who know more.....
I don’t think I have ever heard Shifter say anything but a glowing review for every player he talks about…..admire his passion….less excited about his player reviews…what I want to hear is what he really thinks.
What is needed is an honest review…no holds barred……and that may have to come from others.....

I was being sarcastic about Hartung narrowing things down. But yeah, Twomey doesn't seem to bring a whole lot extra to the table, though I do like looking at his write ups anyway.

I think with most reporters though, they don't really know more about the players themselves than any of the amateur draft followers on BigFooty for example. I think their real value is in predicting where the players will go, given that they probably have more contact with the teams than we do. However, most of the time, they can't get a good prediction until right before the draft anyway.

I do like Emma Quayle's work though, she actually knows a lot about the players. I like Landsberger only because he provides some supercoach scores for players, but he does make them all sound like superstars, and his videos are pretty cheesy.

Twomey annoyed me a little last week when he implied that we reached and went against the grain by picking up Stringer and Macrae. I reckon it's mostly because he was a bit bitter that he didn't get close with his predictions for our picks.
