The chorus of noise is growing that we are taking Bontempelli.

More reports are around that we are cooling on Aish, and getting hotter for Bontempelli.

It's really interesting, I know that Knightmare has consistently rated his abilities throughout the year, and his level has slowly slid up his power ratings (which I respect as a very good indicator of talents).

If dalrymple passes on aish and scharenberg and bontempellis a bust, that's a career killer right there. Massive call if he makes it. Balls on the line stuff.
Not sure I 100% agree Fronk. Macrae was seen as too early by some (and was rated that highly based almost solely on one year of football), and Stringer came with his risks and was taken over much safer players - Wines included, who most acknowledged would be a good AFL player at the very least. Bontempelli on the other hand is a guy that Collingwood are hugely into at pick 6, and that GWS also absolutely love. Bontempelli is a risky pick, on that I completely agree - but if he's a "balls on the line" pick, I'd have to say that both of our picks last year were also "balls on the line" picks, yet not many would agree with that.

Hear what you're saying dannnnnn, but I'd argue that macrae (unbelievable champs form against the best in his age group) and stringer (regarded as best player in the land as a 16 year old) were much better credentialled than bontempelli. Id also argue that we didn't pass on a couple of two time all Australians that also fill glaring holes on the list for macrae and stringer (Mayes was as an underager but missed out in 2012 from memory?).

Clearly it's not as simple as "pick the all Australia kids". But it's also true that sometimes recruiters get too cute and look for things that aren't there. Would be a hugely ballsy pick to take bontempelli. Of course he could turn out to be an inspired selection, and of course we'd all hope he does if we take him. But based on the opinions of some industry guys that I seriously trust, I wouldn't be passing on aish and scharenberg for bontempelli under any circumstances.

I just don't understand why there is even a possibility we'd pass on Aish. There must be underlying issues, because as a player he is exactly what we need in our midfield.

All fair points Fronk. I'm just not sure it's a pick that could spell the end for Dalrymple should he fail. Is it gutsy? Absolutely. But is it a pick completely out of nowhere and contradictory to what most recruiters think? I don't think so. I don't agree with it, but I don't think it's a pick that will decide his career.

If there's a legitimate reason for passing on Aish, I don't mind if we do. I just hope like hell our reason isn't because his champs stats showed he was "too outside".

A mouth-breather perhaps?

I can't imagine we'd be that short sighted... I hope.

He's 194cm. Remember Twomey tweeting it in excitement at the time and you've just gotta look at the kid, he's a giant. No way he's 191cm.

I do often ask myself if he was 184cm would he be top 30? But i go harsh on him. He's got good disposal, kicks well on both sides, he is a good mark (but i feel that's on players smaller than him) he definitely can play midfield and win clearances, and he's super agile. He's already a pretty bloody good player as his TAC cup season showed and if he's coachable then i'll get all excited about his potential. He won't end up a "just wasn't good enough" player i'm confident on that.

Having said that i do hope there's nothing wrong with Aish

CLUBS are facing an agonising decision on whether to risk a top-10 draft pick on one of the country's brightest prospects as it emerges Matthew Scharenberg is battling injuries affecting both feet.
Throwing a major curve ball into the likely order for Thursday's draft, word filtered out last night about growing fears the ready-made South Australian faces running issues because of bone-stress reactions in his feet.

Things are getting very interesting.

I'd prefer pick KK or Aish over Bontempelli myself, but if the club do make the bold decision to go for Bontempelli, i'd be trusting and even more happier than actually getting KK or Aish.

Did they tell him not to run at the combine as well?
Not saying he doesn't have foot problems, but they've been around for a while. The fact that the news just happened to spread really quickly last night out of absolutely nowhere, less than a week before the draft, is very suss.

I'm not a fan of taking Bontempelli PS but this isn't a convincing argument, in my opinion. Every recruiter has their misses and every recruiter has their hits - while one rates him as the 17th best, the one who rates him as the best could be the one who ends up right in the end.
Could be, but obviously the kid's very inconsistent with those vagaries.
Using pick 4 on a kid like that is just to risky.
Recruiters fall in love with players size and athletic abilities way to much for mine.

I'd say he'd have had a medical and all clubs would know his status.
Unless it's career threatening, he'll still go early

If we take Bontempelli, would he be expected to play a fair few games next year?

I do like that our recruiters aren't afraid to go against the grain, but sometimes the obvious pick is the right one.

Depends on how the team plays, I think. If we are in finals contention the I'd think he'd play only two or three, but if we struggled, I think he'd play around the same amount that J-Mac played this year to speed up his development.

Same would go for Jimmy Aish, I'd imagine.

Sure, we have holes all over the field but IMO our worst problem post 2013 is having no good tall forwards.

Picking McCarthy would be a brave, inspired choice.

We can also pick up another good tall forward next year when we finish bottom 4-6 in 2014 albiet not top shelf.
