Chris Grant - you've said a few times that your source thinks we're cooling on Aish. Have they said anything about why? I'm really curious to know what it is that's caused this slip. He's gone from being one of the best of the draft for the past two years to being someone who may slide to god knows where. Is there a legitimate reason or do people just get bored with the same prospect being at the top for so long? :p

Never said we are cooling on Aish, I've had doubts we would be taking him for a long time. He just reckons we rate Bontempelli higher. Apparently Bontempelli aced the good people test and we obviously rate his ability. Regarding Aish, there's a combination of a few things which I have mentioned before. The big difference between Kelly, Scharenberg and Bontempelli to Aish which i was told was work ethic. Aish doesn't work hard enough especially defensively. It's not awful or anything, it's just certainly not as good as those guys. Size was also mentioned. Whilst not a big deal Bmac does prefer the bigger bodies.

For versatility, why no Scharenberg for us then? Most versatile and best performed. Surely we're not being scared off by rumours of foot issues. I hope Chris Grant's mail is right, and we are still interested in him.

I haven't spoken to my source since Scharenberg and the club had it's final meeting together. Since then there's been late breaking news that he has had serious foot troubles and clubs only found out late this week. I'm not at all confident we will go with him now. I think it will be Bontempelli now as he was the back up option to Scharenberg as stated. Anyway will be speaking to him early next week to confirm that.

Also, reading through Chris25's thread, came across this comment which I think explains my view really well:

Think that describes it perfectly to be honest. I'm not a massive fan, no, but the above (combined with the fact that Aish has shown more on a more consistent basis) is pretty much bang on why I can't understand us taking Bontempelli over Aish.
Both Knightmare and Chris rate Bontempelli high, but they rate Aish higher.
Aish has had two years playing under a more structured environment of senior footy .
Surely this has to be an advantage over a kid playing against his age group.
It's not a recruiters pissing competition or I'm the smartest person in the room, pick the least risky proposition

Problem is, this isn't Aish. He's absolutely a risk, just a lesser one than Bontempelli.

Given the information from grant that we are more likely to pick bontempelli because he seems like he will work harder, I think I'm more comfortable with getting him now. I think a lot of talented players fall because they don't have an attitude that matches. If we feel that he has both, he may be less a risk than he looks on the surface.

Emma Q's rankings are out.

Anyone else find it interesting that KM now ranks Aish higher than ever? Is it his Collingwood bias? He has always had Bontempelli higher until now

Lol that's exactly what I thought but he seems pretty professional so I doubt it..

Looks like Collingwood will get Aish at pick 6 and Scharenbuger at pick 10... wow making out like bandits yet AGAIN after Grundy + Kennedy last year. Reckon Aish will be one of the best from the draft.

My 2 Bobs worth I prefer Bontempelli - we are seeing with Fremantle the body size of midfielders getting taller and heavier
The similarities although raw between BP and Pendelbury swing my vote his way
Tough choice for the club and that bloke with the long K name may also come into contention - regardless we will get a good player - WOOF

This is the argument I don't understand for Bontempelli - one club in the past however many years has reached a grand final with such a tall midfield, and they didn't even win it. Now all of a sudden it's the way the game is trending towards?

Not having a go at you acker I just think the whole "tall midfield" trend is being seriously overblown and I'd be really, really disappointed if that's why we're taking Bontempelli.

I put that in as a FACTOR and stand by players do seem to be as a trend getting taller - I also emphasised BP similarities to Pendlebury one of the best players in the competition
Aish is a nice player but I just feel BP has a bigger upside and Im sticking to my view

Sorry, wasn't insinuating it was your only reason or questioning your opinion - the height thing is just something I've seen numerous times from a lot of people and I'm not sure I understand it. Wasn't directed at you personally it was just a general comment.

And if we take Bontempelli we are no doubt the team that goes against popular (media/fan) opinion in the draft. I guess it's not necessarily a bad thing as Clay Smith, Macrae and Stringer look the goods but sometimes the obvious pick is the right one. Will obviously be a long time to find out whether it's the right move

All this debate on Aish or Bontempelli reflects pretty well which way we'll go in the draft. For two years now we've been crying out for a faster, classier midfield so one of these guys is our likely target. In terms of ability I can't see much between the top 6 picks (excluding Boyd of course), so I'd be happy with any of them. But in terms of stated need, it's Aish or Bontempelli who'll wear R W & B next year.

I am curious though, if we get Bontempelli, where does everyone see us using him? The wing? Off the back line? Roaming the forward half with time in between the midfield and forward line? Given his height and marking ability, plus he isn't a bad shot at goal either, would not surprise me if we see him down their a bit.

Macrae, Stringer and Bontempelli will all play almost identical roles so they'll all rotate between the forward line/centre/rover positions.

Yes ,Emma Quayle has Aish rated higher than Marcus!
We're picking him because he is tall? Of course because Freo are doing that !
I'm totally staggered to be honest

I feel sick just thinking of Collingwood ending up with Aish and Scharenberg. They are just smarter than other teams
Well if we pick up Aish they don't look smarter. We could afford to reach last year with two picks, but this is a no brainer.
We were linked with O'rourke and even Plowman, and ended up with the next bestmacrae( could have been Wines )

just because BF has had Aish higher for a couple years doesn't mean Collingwood's smarter than us taking him. IF our club takes MB it's because they think he'll be a better player in the future. Its logic isn't too bad either, the kid has continually improved in his weaknesses and has all undeniable qualities that we like - good contested work, good mark, great disposal, moves well... yes he hasn't played two years of SANFL but this year he went from being a half back to just about the most dominant mid in the TAC cup and a clearance machine- averaging over a goal a game. The club doesn't have their eyes closed just hoping.

1 Kennedy from Sydney is a tall mid fielder and they did win a flag

2 could Aish have deliberately eased up during the U18 champs to avoid GWS, Melbourne, St Kilda and maybe even us. Mid 2012 the bottom 3 in particular looked pretty ordinary and he may have wanted to see if he could wrangle his way to a stronger club by easing up. I am trying to understand his performance in the champs and square it with the rating so many have of his supposed class. His highlights in the SANFL look so much better.

If there's any inclination he did, then that's not the sort of player we want
