Lol 2011 was a ******* great draft, Talia at pick 39 is huge and Smith is a beast, you can't say those two only "look ok" but then blame him for flops in the rookie draft when 90% of rookie picks do flop, also getting JJ and Dahl in the one rookie draft also deserves a hell of a lot more credit than "looks ok".

Are we recruiting lawyers or footballers?. Whilst, an interview may help clarify a few things regarding personality fit and motivation, surely the kids history is paramount and speaks far more eloquently and loudly than any words.

In fact, I would guess a number who know their behavior and motivation is suspect, will spend the greatest amount of time preparing to impress in the interview. Whilst, a kid who works his butt off, is fully committed may just be perplexed by the questions. They are not there for their persuasive abilities.

If your son is a likely first round pick, your not likely to think about the interviews at all. Whereas if there is some doubt where he might be taken or even overlooked, then I am sure the parents and local coaches educate and prepare the boy.

Imagine interviewing a grumpy 18 year old Matthew Scarlett who gives you monosyllabic answers? Or Dwayne Swann who carries himself like he has no care in the world? I would be very dubious making assessments on interviews with kids who have so little life experience or had any time for personal self reflection. You would be better off interviewing their parents/teachers/coaches/friends to assess what and who they are.

It would be fascinating to know what questions they ask these kids and why the kids would find the interviews tough?

I'm not worried by that. It's all pretty full on for them and Even though these TAC kids get some media/speech training. You would not have got 5 words out of me when I was 18 y/o at a job interview..... Now you cant shut me up.

It doesn't mean we won't pick him (Billings), was just a general comment. It's not like he said I don't want to play for the bulldogs or anything like that. They interview friends, family etc. so they would get a better gauge as to what kind of person he is.

Good point but i dont think clubs use at as the be-all and end-all like a job interview. Its just another way to help find who is the best fit. If Billings is clearly the best footballer and is a decent enough bloke, we take him regardless of if he didnt "interview well"

Had another look at Kalashnikovs highlights and that left foot has to be the best in this draft by some margin.
And he seems to spot short and long targets under pressure and find them.

I know the Berger / Billings option seemed settled but a kick like that can not be dismissed.
The kid moves with such grace too.

I shall now channel my Prudden and hope to find the answer

Had his named shortened by Collingwood President Eddie Maguire shortly after he arrived at the club to help Collingwood fans with its spelling and thereby avoid the unnecessary years of correcting it.

I'd say we are a tough interviewer for most draft hopefuls because of the type of person Macca wants at the club. Footy skills are just part of why, it's the questions relating to their families and upbringing and things like that which will unstick a 17/18 year old

Interviews are overrated. Is the kid a good kid?? Is he a team player?? Does he work super hard?? Does he know right from wrong?? Will he bleed for the club and the team?? If yes, then who cares how smart the kid is. I know its been used as an example before, but Dough Hawkins is barley literate and was an absolute maestro on the footy field.

Im a massive NBA fan and a couple of years ago my team (Golden State Warriors) drafted a guy on character off the back of his interview (guys name is Ekpe Udoh). We passed on a guy (Greg Monroe) because he didnt come and interview with us. Udoh wore a suit, spoke well and charmed everyone. And now he cant get off the bench for arguably the worst team in the NBA (Milwaukee) while Monroe is a young borderline All-Star with huge value around the league.

Interviews are very overrated, but if you're splitting two players who are 50/50, like Aish and Billings, it is handy to have.
