My understanding is that both the South aussie boys are the ultimate pros and work their asses off. Passing on them for bontempelli on account of work ethic or the "good bloke" test is absolute bollocks I'm afraid.

Why?
Most/all kids coming through work their arses off. Shara didnt interview well and didn't gel with his future coach and employer, so why on earth would we employ him when there is someone that is equiped just as well and gets along well with his employer.

.

What put you under that impression? You don't think guys like Aish & Scharenberg would do the same?
Obviously I don't have any personal insight into the characters of these kids but everything I have read about Bontempelli paints him in that light.
According to a few rumors floating about, the interviews that the club has had with these kids is what has put Bonts out in front so it would seem this might be the case.
The rumours circulating about interviews with Billings & Sharenberg are not as glowing. Haven't read anything either way on Aish.
Essentially it is all just speculation. I am only trying to point out that the club is working with far more information than is available to anyone here, or in the media for that matter.

Aish looks like a future leader of a club, speaks and handles himself really well.

I think guys like Bontempelli, KK and Blake Acres off the top of my head sounded like really genuine down to earth kids whereas Aish sounded like he has been doing media training since he was 5, sounds very professional. Not saying I'd prefer one or the other just making an observation

Also said Scharenberg was a flight risk in two years for anyone bar Collingwood. Wouldn't be surprised if this has been promoted by him/his family and is part of the reason it appears he's slipping.
SA kids going to WA/VIC these days aren't flight risks, only if they end up at the Gabba they might be. Griff, Minson and Cooney have stuck with us and Lake left for another VIC club.

It may not necessarily be work ethic or professionalism, but there definitely seems to be an element at play that is not apparent to us, but is heavily influencing the club's opinion on these kids.

Maybe it is as simple as the club deciding that Bontempelli has a personality that is going to fit in better with the rest of our list. I know that seems ridiculous, but whilst we analyze our list on paper & in short videos, the club is dealing with actual people. Nobody wants another Acker. (off-field anyway.)

Or maybe they genuinely do think he will become the best player in the draft.

whichever young buck's name we read out tonight, i reckon he's going to a club that is much better equipped to develop him than he would have 5 years ago. our coach is forging a wonderful reputation for developing young players / young men and the support staff reads like an All-Australian team from 5 years ago. i've never been more confident that our young players, so long as they are prepared to listen to the advice given, are going to develop into quality players.

so if wego with MB - i can't wait til BMac, Joel Corey & Shagga Grant get their grubby little paws on him and see what we're dealing with in 2 years time!

Just repeating what was said.

Considering someone else has previously mentioned that Scharenberg seemed "disinterested" during his interview with us, it suggests to me that he has made it clear he has little desire to be drafted by us.

I read somewhere on the d&t board that it was suggested he was a flight risk to any team bar Collingwood.
I don't personally buy that, but I wouldn't put it passed the underhanded scum to get in the kids ear & tell him that the mighty pies with their piles of cash & elite facilities are the only club that can manage his foot problems.

Reckon they might have got in Grundy's ear last year too. Apparently he was spouting some crap pre-draft about wanting to go to an elite club.

I think it would be the latter. If our guys think bontempelli will end up the best player out of him, aish and scharenberg, then sweet, go ahead and take him. Happy with that.

All I was saying was that people who know these guys, are adamant they're great kids with outstanding work ethic and leadership skills, so id be surprised/disappointed if we passed on them for reasons other than talent.

My source isn't overly convinced we will be going with Bontempelli either. He said he wouldn't be at all surprised if Aish's name is called out. Said Scharenberg appears to be a bit of a dark horse as is Billings.

No matter what happens it's going to be pretty exciting to see what happens.
Sounds like he has changed his mind. But the good news is, your source is going to get it right. Bontempelli , not surprised with Aish, Scharenberg and Billings dark horses, surely he could have thrown a couple more in. He's a top source, I think he will get it right.

Fair go GrandBlue and fronkalicious - perhaps you should re-read what TBOW actually wrote before you bag him out.

I think it's important to remember that talent is only part of the equation.
Plenty of highly rated draftees have thought they could get by on talent alone & been quickly surpassed by guys will do whatever it takes to become an AFL player.

Bonts does seem like a guy who will work his butt of under Macca.
That doesn't really seem like a high risk selection to me.

I think that the point being made was that Bontempelli has a huge potential upside - seemingly much higher potential for improvement than most if not all potential first round picks. Given that he seems very likely to work hard to realise some or all of that potential, he really isn't the huge risk that some are making him out to be.

TBOW didn't mention the South Aussie pair at all.

Not bagging him at all Mutt. Just making general comment about the notion of taking bontempelli on the basis of work ethic/character and pointing out that the other guys likely available at our pick tick the "no dickheads" policy box as well.

Tonite going to be fun. Particularly excited about picks 42 and 60. Hoping for Isaiah miller

Hi Emma, What's the latest news on the Dogs Picks 4, 42 & 60?
Great work with the coverage everyone appreciate it :)

Thank you. Don't be nervous! I think it'll be Bontempelli at 4. But you never know, they could surprise us all and take Aish or Scharenberg. I think there will be some good players get through to 42 and depending on who's there at 60 they could look at grabbing ex Gold Coast player Mav Weller.

I've got some very good late mail on these two late picks, which I will put up on the other thread before 7pm when the thread gets unlocked. I cant do it now as it will get back to other clubs and this bloke will lose his job and I'll lose a mate. And these names we are looking at might surprise and haven't really been linked to us by on BF or in any media Phantoms that i can see. :thumbsu:

Are other clubs interested in these speculative picks too? Or is it another Prudden type pluck?

Seems to still be a decent chance we go with Aish.

Callum Twomey: Bontempelli is how I see it at the moment, but there continues to be talk about Aish and the Dogs.

Our pick will dictate a lot of the top 10.

Without giving away too much and based on what knowledge you have, how do you feel about your late mail - excited, hesitant, indifferent?
