I tell you, i lose sleep every night over Lennon/Cripps and Buddy/Tambling. Heck, even Richard Lounder at number one in the draft for us back in the 80's. It really vexes and plagues my thoughts. Is this the Bay? Asking for a friend.

Mmmm

Memories
Light the corners of my mind
Misty water-colored memories
Of the way we were

Scattered pictures,
Of the smiles we left behind
Smiles we gave to one another
For the way we were

Can it be that it was all so simple then?
Or has time re-written every line?
If we had the chance to do it all again
Tell me, would we? Could we?

Memories, may be beautiful and yet
What's too painful to remember
We simply choose to forget

So it's the laughter
We will remember
Whenever we remember...
The way we were...
The way we were...

Could be the words of an all time great song, but I’m no big city lawyer

A much maligned OP, and I reckon a few didn't quite get to the point. Our player development has been exceptional.

This is a league that uses the draft to equalise. Being the best at the National Draft is never going to be a competitive advantage. Doesn't matter at all if you occasionally get a Ben Lennon or Corey Ellis - as long as you have kick-ass development.

McRae and X Clarke are our secret weapons.
Yeah thanks for recognizing that. I think I may have come from the wrong angle in the pre-amble but the main point wasn't that we screwed up but more praising our player dev. Which is a much better base for continued success - rather than going through a full re-build.

two things we can rejoice in

we have got better at darfting and trading

and we have been lucky , or luckier

Not convinced the "full rebuild" actually works anymore, anyway.

I've been re-watching the 2019 Richmond season. Had a look at Carlton in Rnd 21 on the weekend. Their no ******* good. That team had Murphy, Kreuzer, Weitering and Walsh. Four number 1 picks. Wouldn't have mattered if they also had Gibbs to make it five. Let's add in their other top ten picks, Plowman, Petrovski-Seton, McKay, Setterfield, Dale Thomas. Their all good footballers. I don't pay enough attention to know what they were like as juniors, but I'd expect they were good selections on draft night. But here we are. The last 13 games - Richmond 13, Carlton zero.

Suns, GWS, and Melbourne have all had more high draft picks than you can shake a stick at, and generally, have picked a good kid. But it counted for less than most people would have predicted ten years ago.

The National Draft is a lottery, and by and large, does not convert to the scoreboard. Player development is where you get a competitive advantage in this decade. Benny knew it. The Fighting Tiger Fund is one of the best things his done.

I reckon getting Grimes in the pre-season draft when Melbourne had a pic in front of us and took one of the McDonald's is a classic. Especially given that Jack Grimes was captain of Melbourne at the time.
The Shai Bolton compo pic for Vickery is genius.
I reckon we did alright with Jack Riewoldt instead of James Frawley is well. Thanks again Melbourne

Kmac was drafted with one of the picks we got from the Richard Tambling trade with Adelaide. Helps mitigate against not picking Buddy.

Amazing how much our 2014 rookie haul shits all over our 2014 ND

Our rookie selections have been off the charts.
I reckon this is because they actually put more thought in to and were more circumspect with the rookie picks ie what sort of role do we need, whats their attitude like etc - whereas with ND we were more best available strategy - the success with the Rookies has changed the way we look at the more recent NDs.

Still a chance for Cripps at end of year. If he wakes up to himself and decides he wants a flag where else would you rather be?
