They're raving about Carlton adding a bigger midfielder who wins his own ball. That appears to be what we'll be picking from at 13. Not saying Cripps is my man, but you're underselling him more than the next best inside mid.

I'm an unabashed fan of Offsider's work...

That's all well and good. But given Mick's comments following the semi final about our extraordinary lack of run and Andy McKay saying on radio pick 13 will be used on the best available outside mid/sweeper, I just don't see how Cripps fits into these plans. But if the club have changed their mind, then fine.

The draft is a very subjective topic. Everyone has their opinion. Each valid. And for me, picking Cripps and potentially overlooking a Lennon, Dunstan, Acres or a few other players, seems like a bit of a reach. We wanted Cripps with pick 32 before we traded it for Everitt (and got 39 back). I guess I just want to know why all of a sudden we want to use 13 on him.

So according to everything I've read, Cripps is: One-paced, an average kick, lacking versatility, but gets a lot of it, and should improve.

I... I can't get excited about this at pick 13.

I understand where you're coming from in regards to reaching for a player because it does seem like that when we supposedly wanted Cripps at pick 32 and now our pick has been downgraded we are using a first round pick on him, now I'm not sure if that is the case as all are just speculations until the 13th pick is called out tomorrow night.
But having to move a kid from a second round to a first round pick is a big deal, the club must see something that the outsiders like us don't see. There are always the intangibles in athletes that can never be measured and they are absolutely immense in terms of making it at the top level.

Where did you read/hear that?!

Saw it somewhere on BF, but was just restating that from etsal's comment, she said that we wanted Cripps at pick 32 before we downgraded that pick for Everitt.

I honestly doubt how anybody would even know that, I remember seeing the post at the time which was posted after our interest in Cripps was made public by somebody who always "claims" to be in know but never gets anything right - and it stated "we want Cripps at #39 not #13 - that's why we wanted to keep #32" ... which I think would be a total fabrication.

Cripps is being spoken up in media circles now as being a mid-late first round pick, after his performance in the Champs (where he was AA), even if the above was true - our recruiting team must have been dreaming to think he'd still be there at #32/39.

Its even more ludicrous to suggest that because we now have conceded that we have no chance of getting him at #39 we are going to reach and select him at #13 over players we rate more highly.

If Cripps is selected at Pick #13 it's because our recruiting team rate him as a top prospect who can add a dimension to our midfield, and still has scope for improvement (when he fills out even more, and grows into his frame), not because we were scared he'd be gone by #39.

This time last year we were all hoping for Ollie Wines to slip through to our pick (not that we're unhappy with Menzel) and suddenly this year, we are against recruiting big bodied midfielders, who provide leadership after they captained WA (when Sheed was injured).

That's the thing no one knows, half the stuff on here are based on rumours and things people hear here and there.

I'm just saying it seems like we're reaching if that's the case, just a hypothesis in reply to etsal's post.
I'm in no way saying that I definitely think that is fact, it was all just suggesting that when you've heard someone we're into for our second round pick is all of a sudden going to be our first round choice that made it seem like reaching.
I did say it's all speculative until tomorrow night so settle down.

I personally don't think we're reaching and have the same belief that whoever we add at pick 13 is what our recruiters believe to be the best pick that suits our club and the culture we're building.

You don't have to believe me about us wanting him at 32.

But other than recent phantom drafts, where has Cripps been spoken up as mid-late first round pick?

The post wasn't an attack on you - SO YOU SETTLE DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:mad::(

Anyway, read on the Collingwood board that Hawthorn recruiter was on SEN and said the top 10 would look like this:

1. Boyd
2. Kelly
3. Billings
4. Aish
5. KK
6. Schaz
7. Lennon
8. McDonald
9. Salem
10. Freeman

So, if you assume Sheed goes to WC at 11. Who do we think Richmond may take?

What does that leave @ 13? Who would be everyone's choice out of the players available?

I think no matter what, we are going to have a choice of some really good players at 13. In this scenario, we may have a choice of McCarthy, Bontempelli, Cripps, Dunstan, Sheed (although WCE will take him), and others. I think no matter what, we are going to get a good player at 13. Luckily Richmond are the pick before us so they will probably get the worst player in draft.

This is whats so appealing IMO.

These days the game is changing - and we are looking more and more for hybrid players, such as a KP sized midfielder (192 cm) that moves like a rover yet can still throw his weight around and use his size to bullock in the contest.
Would love to roll out Judd, Robinson, Bell, Murphy, Gibbs, Graham, Mclean, Curnow, Carrazzo, Menzel, Thomas and a bullocking mid next year.

With number eight backing them up in the ruck. :hearts:

If we get Cripps, then he might be what we were hoping for in Grigg.

Leaves Richmond taking Bontempelli IMO.

Leaves Richmond taking Bontempelli IMO.
Their fans say they're interested in Jones.

Personally think they lack an Acres type flanker/mid who could play tall and small. They don't have a Garlett, let alone a Menzel or Yarran.

Cripps had good numbers all year in the WAFL despite not being suited to that type of footy as it's not stoppage riddled like footy in the southern states.

Once he got to nationals and they were all on the same fields he led the championships for clearances (more than one clearance per game more than the next closest) and second among all players (first among midfielders) for contested possessions.

Had better disposal efficiency than noted good ball users Acres and Johnson which is impressive given the way most of his possessions were earned. Had nearly 20 touches per game in these shortened games, I would think once he gets to an AFL standard with his endurance and can get to more contests plus being in a league (AFL or VFL) where the stoppages are a lot more frequent with the wet grounds and higher numbers around the contests he will be winning a lot more of the ball.

Very big boy that uses his body extremely well to win the ball.
