Much prefer a mature aged Ruck than an 18 year old bean pole who would be useless if called upon, just not convinced that Wood was the best available mature aged out there.

The only reason we would have taken Wood is for us to have a competitive ruck-man at the NB's.
I know that may not coming off as much sense at face value but it's obvious that without a competitive ruck-man at this level, our mids don't get as much opportunity.
We're clearly not into building rucks as much as we are making sure that the mids get plenty of opportunity. For this reason it makes sense.
cameron woodWhat do you think happens to high draft picks who don't make it, and there are plenty of them, that they give away footy? Most play on, for money, at a lower level, where they star because they have the skills that led to them being a high draft pick.
How many do you know of that then get drafted again?
I can't think of any either. Anyone? I am genuinely interested.

Name one better in the state leagues.
Surely a case of 'better the devil you know' in Mick picking up Wood. He knows his game and vice-versa and has worked with him before.I don't watch much/any state league football, but looking through the VFL (Russ Gabriel) SANFL (Seb Gailhaus) WAFL (Paul Johnson) teams of the year. Then surely these are better options
Rowe and Casboult were drafted as forwards first and foremost. Now Casboult can concentrate on his duties as a forward and kicking them through the sticks.Wood is never going to make it. Why not pickup an 18yo beanpole basketballer or Canadian rubgy player as a project. Really think that the recruiting team has lost the plot. It is also a kick in the teeth for Rowe and Casboult as they are seen to be not good enough as emergency backups. Can't remember their contract durations but it seems a renewal is unlikely.
But we all know that with his ball drop he is never going to kick them through the big sticks. I thought being a potential backup ruck was his 2nd string but Mick obviously feels otherwise. We can only hope the track watchers report a different ball drop otherwise he plays out his contract in the NBs.Rowe and Casboult were drafted as forwards first and foremost. So Rogers says Thorp was never coming to Carlton. Common sense prevails.
Casboult is a potential backup ruck. But what would we do it Kruz and Warnock both went down? We can't play Cas for entire games in the ruck. Especially for extended periods of time.
But the Hampson trade opened up the Docherty trade. Which also allowed us to get Everitt...and then we took the talented Giles. And we spent our second rookie pick on a back up ruckman. Structurally we're so much better off.You play Sam and Levi 30% each in the ruck and draft an 18yo kid to handle the other 40% gametime. (Darcy Cameron, for example, is already a 102kg specimen)
Wasn't the reason we traded Hampson because we had a surplus of rucks - now we rookie a less talented player who's a year older?![]()

Bombers lock in list“At the National Draft, Zach (Merrett) was a player that we ranked in the top 15 and we got him at pick 26 in exchange for Stewart Crameri.

I wasn't against trading Hampson. I just question the equation of
Rogers' pessimism over every remaining 18yo ruck prospect across every U18 team throughout the nation = Malthouse's optimism over a player who was rarely the first or 2nd choice ruck.
I take a long term approach of developing a quality ruck (Sam Jacobs style) for the next epoch. Clearly Malthouse believes in a 2 year window before Waite and Judd retire or he wouldn't recruit 3 players in their mid 20s.
So we'd have a team containing Rowe, Waite, Casboult & an 18 year old ruck? Not gonna work.
The whole point of getting rid of Hampson was because we had too much cash tied up in 3 ruckmen
Maybe they just think that we have the ruck position sewn up for the forseeable 5-6 years and their is no great pressure to develop a young ruck.
Warnock is almost 27; I personally can't see him lasting that long but at the same time I don't think Wood is the answer.
