List Mgmt. 2013 DRAFT

You can have one international rookie outside the list of 44.

The 44 players can consist of 38senior/6rookies, 39senior/5rookies, 40senior/4rookies.

With 38senior you can have two nominated rookies and the rest can be added if there's a LTI.

Rookies cost less and can be delisted after a year...a better option in a weak draft.

OK Cool. Cheers

Would people rather Hampson OR Docherty + Wood? I know which I'd chose.
We have turned Shaun Hampson and our 2nd round pick in too:
Everitt, Docherty and Cameron Giles plus we picked up a experienced back up ruckman with a rookie pick.

That's some good business if you ask me.

Cameron Wood, joke of a pick. CFC still has no intent to kick goals. The same forward line will get us further down the ladder this year.

We were crying out for backup for Kreuzer and Hampson. Our recruiting staff believe that Wood was the best ruck in the country not on a senior AFL list in 2013.

It's only a joke of a pick if you don't look at things logically.

Yep. I don't think Sydney are fretting about what Tom Derixckzxzs will do for them this year, or even Richmond with Orren Stephenson. Not everyone on the list can be an established or developing superstar.

Warnock is almost 27; I personally can't see him lasting that long but at the same time I don't think Wood is the answer.

Rookie listing a young ruck of recent years = club development spending for another clubs benefit. See Jacobs, Maric, Mumford etc. Happy for any teen rucks coming to Carlton to be considered in the elite category.

I just don't see why we wouldn't have gone after a key forward when it's the gaping hole in our team. Rowe and Levi can back up ruck. I see it highly unlikely that both Warnock and Kreuzer will be out injured at the same time. Yeah it's only a rookie spot I understand, but then what's the harm with Thorp as a rookie, or another kpp (I can't think of any off the top of my head). He's a figjam but he's got talent, we didn't pick him so moving on, my concern is that our forward line stunk quite a bit last year. Unless with Docherty, Everitt and Watson playing down back and Hendo forward that gives me hope, otherwise I dunno where the goals are gonna come from.

There's KPF depth in the team just not a heap of quality, which wasn't going to come in this rookie draft anyway.
I think the goals will come from the mids next year - Thomas, maybe Walker, a fit Murphy, etc.

The recruiters and coaches spend copious amounts of time throwing around all the permutations, yet we know better at the drop of a hat. :)

Make no mistake though that money has some say in the way we worked through things this year.
There may well be a loosening of the purse-strings next year though.

The loosening of the purse strings to keep our free agents I hope ;) and get some new ones if we can afford it.

The equation is a simple one.

Did the recruiting team believe there were any key forwards available at our selections who we believed would be of greater benefit to our side than the players we already have on the books?

Did the recruiting team believe we'd be better off improving other areas of our squad more than we would if we grabbed an available key forward?

If the answer to both of the above questions at all of our selections is no, then it's clear why we didn't bother with a key forward.

Given our recruiting direction this year, it is clear what the answer to those questions was. We didn't rate many talls in the draft. Why would we select someone we didn't rate or believe could be a contributor either immediately or down the track?

Other clubs watch VFL too. Mitchell was going through entire games without a touch.

Yes Mitchell has been a major disappointment as McCarthey was, I thought maybe one of the Adelaide clubs might have Rookied McCarthey.
So No one we delisted got a 2nd chance and Russell didn't get picked up by anyone either..

What I see from the past 2 months is that our club is progressing forward and trying to improve.
Firstly, I would say we've done reasonably well during trade month.
Secondly, I'm happy to see another few kids coming into the club and try to make a career and contribute to the team.
Last but not least, the decisions made by the club I believe is helping to build a strong culture, playing list and a better future. Decisions such as not to draft Thorp, or to trade down our second round pick in order to bring another player in to address needs (and still able to pick up the draftee we wanted may I add), are just some examples.
The decision to pick up Wood in the rookie draft is from a safety prospective. He'll be ranked as the 3rd ruckman on depth chart, and most likely spending the majority, if not all the time in the Northern Blues. Not only is he a safety net, he is also there for our developing midfielders who are coming through the ranks to help them in the ends to get them the ball from the bounce.
That is just being careful and smart, because failure to prepare is preparing to fail.

Yeah I see your points and I agree with them, I just don't see what the harm would have been in rookie listing Thorp, one year deal, see if he had changed. Alas, it matters not.

I totally agree - I am shattered that we didn't rookie list Thorp.

Not only am I unsure about the Cam Wood selection, but using two picks on kids from Ireland who have never played the game is surely riskier than drafting Thorp who would have immediately given us some cover in the area we are weakest.
