What pick do we get if Betts left and we didn't get Thomas?

If I had to choose now I would probably draft these guys with our first and 2nd.

1st rounder for Nathan Freeman ( mid/fwd) Judd/Dangerfield type with explosive pace and 2nd rounder for Patrick Cripps ( 6 foot 2 Inside extractor type mid whose inside game is apparently only 2nd to Matt Crouch).

This is only determined by the AFL once Betts has left. Until then they can only give the club an indication.

Looking at the facts as they present themselves, we can't say definitively what we'd receive in the situation above, but the compensation is likely to fall under the 2nd band of compensation, being an end of first round pick.

Billy Hartung would be an interesting selection at #13.

Adds pace, midfield rotation, nice big tank, beautiful disposal on off both feet.

.... but ... will his height work against him? 176 cms.

At Carlton? Definitely.

The knock on our midfield, other than the lack of depth, is the size of our midfielders, particularly in comparison to the midfielders at Sydney, Hawthorn, Geelong. I would be surprised if our recruiters looked at any midfielders under 185cm, unless they are too good to overlook.

Add Freo to that list too. This is the knock on guys like Ellard. Way too small for an inside mid in today's game, especially when the rest of the guys he's working with aren't big either.

Not saying I disagree with BluesMan, who told you he was an average kick?
To me sin he's a ball accumulator, that can get forward, though isn't the best defensively running. Pretty decent kick I reckon so thats a tick I suppose. Like I said, Im not sure he's a first rounder for anyone.

Yeah that's how I'd describe his game too, I was more curious about where BM123 heard he was an average kick. Gotta be careful about who you get your info from at this time of year.

We do have a couple of big bodied mids in Robinson & Bell, although they have big questions over their kicking ability. If only we could get Craig Bradley over the Summer and spend a heap of times with these 2. It frustrates me no end when these 2 get the footy, yet give it straight back due to their kicking errors.

Another reason why I would love to see Tuohy move into the midfield. Paid his dues as a backman, hard at it, and kicks the footy as well as anyone at the club.

For the knocks on his kicking Bell showed very clean hands again on Saturday...looked genuinely Judd like at times in his ability to scoop up the ball at pace. Most exciting part of his game. Agree on the kicking though. Even average quality disposal by foot would make him a very damaging player.

When you look at guys like Armfield and Carrazzo, both of these guys have improved their kicking over the years. No reason why Bell couldn't improve either.

The difficulty with Robinson so is that he is a bit of a scatter brain, I don't think he's as composed as Bell when he gets the footy. Often rushed, and this is what makes him turn the ball over.

Assuming we get Thomas, if we could get another hard bodied mid with good skills - I think we then go out into the market to see if we can find a KPP.

Unfortuantely with Bell and Robbo it isn't just skill. Decision making comes into it as well. Instead of lowering the eyes they continually boot it 60m, even if their 'target' is on the lead about 40m away. Composure is terrible and bombing it long without purpose falls right into the hands of modern teams defence.

Bell gets caught more than Robinson. Doesn't sense the tackler behind him. Would be hell to pay if that was Davies or Russell. Momentum killer if a player gets caught because he didn't move it on quickly.

Armfield still turns it over as an outside player. Different kettle of fish to a mid who has to win it in close and get rid of it in heavy traffic.

Mclean has the smarts and skill on both sides of his body to make up for his lack of pace.

Splitting hairs IMO.
Judd, Murphy and Simpson turn the ball over as well.
I was talking about big bodied mids - not about Armfield.
Bell has alot of the tools to become a pretty good player - we just need to harness this skill and work on the areas that need improvement.

spot on post.

We need to bring someone in who will keep the Armfields out of our best 22. We probably have those players anyway though. Carrazzo, Graham etc who will get more midfield time next year.

The composure of the whole team is at times poor, and in reality not everyone has the kicking skills of yarran who can direct his teammate to mark in space, it just comes down to having some footy smarts and doing the most sensible thing.
some players can develop that over time, some players already have it, and then there are those that just don't have it. that's what separates good players and average players.

You spoke about Bell improving his disposal like Armfield and Carrazzo. ;)

Judd, Murphy and Simpson aren't comparable to an Armfield.

Robinson's flaws are obvious, but the sum is still greater than the parts.

You don't miss a trick do you RK.
Pretty sure you know the point I was trying to make.
Bell has scope for improvement with the assets he brings to the table.

He's still a fair way from senior selection, but Temay has good kicking skills as well.
Probably needs another full year in the VFL though.

Bell GETS THE BALL HIMSELF and usually has made meters WAITING for someone to back him up or PRESENT - he is so far ahead of any other developing mid at carlton - even the COACHING STAFF have him starting. If he was playing at Sydney or Hawthorn or anywhere where teh midfield is actually a cohesive back up unit - he would already be a labelled a star.

DOH!!

Bell lacks composure, foot smarts and awareness and struggles in any situation that requires him to be more than a battering ram or dominating presence.

If he can improve his ability to keep his head and find the best option will be excellent. But as of right now call me a sceptic

Bell's pretty slow but I find it funny how often he seems to find space.

I think a lot of people 'look' - but very few can actually 'see'.

Sydney - are definately benefitting from being trained to deal win congested situations with many short sharp passes through tight formations of players spread around the contest and moving together knowing what the strategy is to escape congestion via hand balling. Te Sydney mids group and gather like a rugby pack - they handle the ball like a rugby pack thtey maul like a rugby pack and they tackle intelligently and rarely give frees. Sydney can do repeat mauls over and over and over again - because they play like a pack of rugby forwards- highly trained in how to move together to work their way through opposition - without the constraints of rugby - they can forward pass....

Pretty obvious to anyone who has played rugby....

Carlton play one out - a rabble - easy pickings.

Every carlton player played with no composure because they were forced to by a better drilled side - even Gibbs probably the coolest with ball in hand under pressure was forced to just put it on the boot and kick forward multiple times...Carlton ARE NOT TRAINED to play skilful congested football.

Why does Sydney make it look easy to escape and evade the forward press? How many times did they look hemmed in but managed to find forward runners and hand ball into gaps? No accident - watch the replay closely to see basic rugby smarts in action.

Yeah no doubt. "Someone heard from someone who quoted someones story differently", is usually what happens.

Fair enough. I'm just sort of fanatically obsessed with us drafting mids who are a decent size with pace ( Freeman) or have good quality extractors with a bit of size to them.

Bell isn't fast, or slow for that matter, however he does have a strong acceleration on the pick up. I don't think it's his decision making that's the problem, he seems to have the right idea, it's just his disposal is let down when trying to hit a target 50m away. Over the preseason he will develop the ability to hit targets over a long distance, as well as his endurance.

Also, the point about his awareness. Personally, I just think that will come down to more AFL experience. Coming from Morningside in QLD is a completely different game to just the VFL in Victoria. The ball movement and style of the game is much quicker. Something that he will have to adjust to, whereas a Menzel or Graham will not. Wait until he gets a full season of AFL exposure under his belt. We really cant be to impatient with these players.
