If that draft order originates - Bontempelli come on down
Too right. Bontempelli would be pick 13 w/o doubt if he slid. If McCarthy goes early, maybe to BRIS, that pushes a few down a peg and leaves us greater options. I'm thinking we'll get a real quality kid whatever happens. All good.

As a Victorian native who crossed the border to South Australia when he was eight, he loves Melbourne but said the adventure of living in an unfamiliar city was enticing.

"I've always wanted to go back. I think I'll eventually head back to Melbourne, even if I do stay in Adelaide for footy.

"I've done a fair bit of work on my kicking over the last year - I used to be fairly average and I guess it's that confidence that I've been trying to take into my games."

I feel this is a good opportunity to draft our own KPF with Mc Carthy if still abouts at pick # 13.
I mean there are are more than a few decent inside mids on our list ATM ,
Unless of course one of the previous mentioned young blokes in this draft is Diesel like in close :thumbsu: :) just got a feeling , a good one that we should take a good punt on Mc Carthy who from all reports will be good to v.good in the years ahead

So I've avoided this thread during exams and all draft related stuff really. When I read that Lennon was a mad Carlton supporter I looked him up on Instagram and turns out there is a picture of him and big lance when he was a kid in the Carlton rooms. What are our chances of getting him?

From reading the posts we need someone like a McCarthy to go before 13 for someone to slide. I think having pick 13 is a good spot to have. Just like last year with the Menz, the mid first round position is where sliders tend to get picked up.

From what I've seen/read about McCarthy, I'm kind of hoping we stay clear of him at 13. He is the 2nd best KPF in the draft, but I realllyyyyy think we need to take a mid with this pick. And I'm hoping McKay was right when he said on radio during trade period pick 13 will be used on best available mid.

I think Lennon is the most realistic (but that's probably wishful thinking) at lasting to 13 out of my favourites. But of course I'd be happy if there was a slider like Menzel last year like Bontempelli or Kolodjashnij etc at 13 .

Not sure if it has been mentioned here already, but I just read that McCarthy has been invited to the draft up at the Gold Coast. Is this what generally happens to potential top 10 picks or anyone who could go in the first round?

First round. Grundy and Menz were invited last year as TG mentioned in another thread

Is anyone concerned that Lennon is more of a flanker currently than a pure mid?
I guess I just dont trust out ability to play players in positions that suit them - re:gibbs

We have got a fair few flankers and wingers on the team, not as many elite centre circle blokes

The article in the West Australian re: McCarthy states that the Lions will take him at #7 if Scharenberg is not there, and if the Lions do take Scharenberg then Collingwood will select him at #10 (not sure why though?).

Despite the midfielders in this draft, and the fact that everybody wants a slider from the top 10 to fall to our pick, I think our recruiting team may find McCarthy too hard to pass up.

Honestly, I'm changing my mind daily (depending on media hype and which highlights package I watch), so I wouldn't be unhappy with any of Freeman, Salem, Acres, McCarthy, Crouch, Lennon at our pick.

So it appears that Travis has seemingly got his life back together and has sorted himself out. Still pretty young (25 years), best clearance player in the SANFL with good disposal skills - did impress me in a NAB Cup game against us when he was a Hawk.

There are two schools of though to this on my end:

1. He would provide a ready made, big body around the midfield to add to our rotation and would be relatively cheap (possibly our last draft pick?), however

2. It seems that he is finally settled and is enjoying life now that he has a girlfriend and that his brother has moved over there to expand their business ... given what he has been through already - he's mentally in a good place right now, so I'd leave him be.

Very deserving of a chance, but IMO does not fit our needs. We need talented young mids to provide the next generation. The team will be better served getting games in to Bell and Graham, and picking up one or two mid kids in the draft. Not against mature KPPs but we have enough over 20 yo mids.
Could "afford" to spend a rookie pick, but that would not be doing him any favours.

Yeah, that's probably our "pool".

What types with our next picks?

Assuming we end up with a "mid" rather than McCarthy, would love to see one of the KPF/Ruck types in Apeness, Nankervis, Brown or Conlon with a subsequent pick. MK and RW will lead the ruck division for at least another 5 years , so this would be more sensible than a less versatile dedicated project ruckman.

Can't claim first hand knowledge, and not getting much love in the previews, but after researching, can't help thinking Ben Cavarra would be a great last pick/rookie if he is still there. Seemingly overlooked because he is 3 or 4 inches short, but his achievements suggest should really be in the first couple of rounds. Could be Boomer Harvey like. (If we did "pull the trigger" on McCarthy, could be the midfield slider of choice in the purported shallow draft)

Edit: Just for a couple of "mates" on here, have no problem if the club chooses to use a late pick on Thorp.:D

This is one theory I'm warming to:

Take the second best available KPP in the pool (McCarthy) if he's still there - and then pick up the best available midfielders to bolster our rotations.

As has been mentioned ad nauseum - this is a shallow draft for KPP, therefore take the best you can early on and then load up on midfielders at the later stages.

Pick #13 - McCarthy
Pick #39 - Bourke/Holman
Pick #51 - Cavarra, Jansen etc

Or ... if we adopt the "take the best available" approach:

Pick #13 - Freeman/Salem/Crouch/Acres
Pick #39 - Bourke/Holman/Apeness
Pick #51 - Thorp/Conlon

Either way, I'll happily back the recruiting team in.

if were going to go down the mature player midfield track, Stephen Clifton from North Ballarat would be an ideal candidate, never really got a shot at GWS (had a broken wrist) Won the Liston Trophy twice, worthy rookie pick IMO

There should be plenty of recently delisted players finding their way on to rookie lists this year.
The likes of Cornelius, Mellington, Weller, Miles, Kennedy, Crichton and plenty of others surely get a look in. Add Tippett, Tuck, Thorp (if lasts), OB's Clifton, Cain, NB's Lambert etc and I think the age dynamic of the rookie lists are going to change a bit.
