I want Bontempelli just because with that surname he should be playing for Carlton.
But otherwise would love it if Billings slid, or Salem, Lennon

Or we just take him and then it doesn't hurt at all when he comes along in leaps and bounds.I hope McCarthy goes before our pick, simply so he's not an option at our pick and that way it doesn't hurt as much if he comes along in leaps and bounds.
Got told today that the potential number 1 pick isn't the nicest bloke going around.
Maybe just cocky because he knows he is good?

I like the look of McCarthy and it is time we started drafting some talls earlier in the draft, but with him being a mad Freo fan and WA boy I can't help but feel that with so many decent mids around our pick, we'd be better off picking up a Victorian lad and taking away the go home factor.
imho, if you are scared of the go home factor in a National Comp, then you are not a good Club.
It's just so easy for players to leave these days. No stigma attached to it any longer. Besides, if you have multiple players of similar ranking around the same mark and they all fill a need, then having a local lad is a decent tiebreaker.
It is. But I think we have a pretty good record at keeping interstate players. Last player that left for homesickness was Jacobs IIRC.
We do. Mind you we haven't had a lot of desirable interstate players over the last decade or so. Russell tried to leave but we threatened him the PSD. Yarran, Garlett, Gibbs, Lucas, Duigan and Armfield are the only interstate potential best 22 players that I can recall off the top of my head. The first 3 are the main ones to worry about.
I just think the shift has happened. Players have started moving around like NRL players, with no regard for being one club players anymore. It will make it so much easier for players to leave in the future.

If kids keep going home, they are confining themselves to being one club players. What are Polec's options from here?
For every Jacobs that goes home, there is a Grigg who moves across the road. It is just player movement. What happened in Brisbane had little to do with homesickness, it's just the most palatable public reason.
Good Clubs just simply have to draft the best and most suitable talent and back their Club to retain who they want to retain.
People just stress about players going home, but most of it is just unnecessary stress.
However, as I said, if you have a local player you rate the same as an interstate player in terms of need, that go home factor is a reasonable tiebreak. We know clubs rarely get value for money when a player does get homesick. I'd say homesickness was part of the reason for some of Brisbane's woe, just not all of the reason. The Voss sacking, some senior player attitudes ... all factors. Doc got to come back home and live a dream. Not the only factor but a factor nonetheless.
Who knows ... Eddie may have stayed for less money had it not been Adelaide, his boyhood team where his idol McLeod played, that came courting.
Brisbane is not a great place to be if you are feeling marginalised & it would be made worse if you are running around in the NEAFL. The Lions are always going to battle to hold onto players when they are not experiencing success, that is why they originally had a salary cap concession. Their three-peat made it easy to retain players, but that is now a decade ago & the club is not buzzing like it was during or immediately after the three-peat years. As a tie breaker....sure np.
But i wouldn't even let go home factor enter my brain when formulating my order if i was a recruiter at a good Vic Club.
Collingwood - 3 SA 1st rounders last year.
Hawks - Last 3 1st rnders interstate kids.
Us - Menzel, Boots
Go home factor is just flavour of the month because an ordinary situation developed in Brisbane.

Roughead, Franklin.Thorp,Dowler,Gumbleton,Sellar ............
Tambling, Oakley Nicholls...can happen with any position. Morton, Gysberts so as not to marginalise our Richmond friend.Thorp, Dowler,Gumbleton,Sellar ............

So what are peoples thoughts and would you be happy with Freeman as our pick next Thursday?
I think it was a major reason for some players such as Longer. I mean leaving Brisbane to join the Saints, as enticing as it sounds I can't think of a worse Victorian club a player would want to join. However, as I said, if you have a local player you rate the same as an interstate player in terms of need, that go home factor is a reasonable tiebreak. Marcus Bontempelli
Club: Northern Knights
D.O.B.: 24.11.1995
Height: 191cm
Weight: 83kg
Position: Tall Midfielder/Utility
Plays Like: Scott Pendlebury
The cousin of Nick Dal Santo, Marcus Bontempelli – is famous for his 50-disposal effort at APS level, comprising of some ridiculous numbers, but nonetheless I’ve had the astute pleasure of seeing plenty of Knights games this year, and Bontempelli is somebody who has quietly gone about his business, yet now finds himself propelled into the spot light and a top 10 selection on November 21. Best described as an athletic and more versatile Jack Watts type, with an injection of Scott Pendlebury’s deft touch and lateral movement – Bontempelli is a rangy midfielder, capable of playing an array of positions, which not only gives him some serious versatility, but a good dose of x-factor, too. A brilliant decision maker and an impeccable footy brain, Bontempelli has mixed an elite endurance base, with speed and agility whilst stamping himself along with Northern Knights teammate, Ben Lennon as one of the best marks of this year’s draft intake. Bontempelli offers an deadly kick rating, operating at a high efficiency of 79% throughout the championships, albeit he had a quieter than usual showing at the National carnival. Bontempelli has outside speed and enough class to go inside 50 and find a target, or finish himself from close, or long range. At 191cms, Bontempelli has earned high praise for his class at the stoppages, excelling in his clearance work making him a tantalising prospect on draft night.
Other Prospects: The Blues loom likely to land a gift this draft, and it could come in the way of Marcus Bontempelli, despite arch rivals not only overlooking Bontempelli, but in doing so have favoured Cameron McCarthy ahead of him – a player strongly linked to Carlton with their first round selection. Blake Acres still looks good here, but it’s hard to see Carlton overlooking Bontempelli should he drop this far down the order.
