NATHAN FREEMAN

Height: 181cm

Weight: 85kg
Club: Vic Metro/Sandringham Dragons/Dingley
Position: Midfielder/Forward
Player Comparision: Patrick Dangerfield
Draft Range: 10-25

Player Profile

One of the most interesting, dynamic and exciting prospects in this year’s draft pool comes in the way of Sandringham’s Nathan Freeman. Highly touted and incredibly gifted, coming into the championships in 2013, Freeman was considered to be a top 10 prospect whose bursts from stoppages, run and carry, and “raging bull” like line-breaking runs caused many to compare him to Adelaide’s Patrick Dangerfield. Freeman is a clearance freak, sublimely gifted by foot and is more often than not his team’s barometer and subsequent igniter. Freeman is a jet, he thrives on the contested ball, loves to push forward for long booming goals and is so well balanced as a midfielder, it’s hard to tell whether his best football is either as an inside midfielder, or outside player. Just like Dustin Martin’s standout trait is his fend-offs, Freeman loves a goose step, very much of the Pendlebury ilk, in that his lateral movements make him incredibly hard to contain. Vision and awareness are other traits of Freeman’s, he sums up pressure situations with ease, players the percentages, and is equipped with such good peripheral vision, that he is quick to put boot to ball and hit up a target, even off one step. If this wasn’t enough, when Freeman is assigned to play forward, he relishes the one on one contest, and in the same way that WA’s Dom Sheed can finish from all over the park, so can Freeman. He wins his own ball either in the air, or at ground level, and if roaming as a high half forward, when he gets the footy in his hands, 9 times out of 10 you can be assured he’ll send a bullet-like pass inside 50 and find a target.
Quote

“Nathan’s probably the best burst-running midfielder in the TAC Cup at the moment and has to be elevating his claims come draft time. He has really taken well to a more defensive focus so his game is not just all-out attack, which it might have been previously. I think that has come about through his work rate and his desire.”
- Sandringham Dragons region manager Ryan O’Connor
Strenghts

Vision, awareness, speed, line-breaking runs, goal kicker, clearnace specialist, prolific ball winner, elite side-step, dynamic mifielder, plenty of tricks, elite kick rating, big endurance, explosive out of the contest, fantastic foot-smarts, aggressive, clean hands, second-efforts and always looks to be opperating at extreme intesnsity, clearnace and inside 50 specialist, never slows down.
Weaknesses

Elects to kick the ball out of contests, rather than handball out as an extract to find a target. His kick to handball ratio is through the roof, and sometimes his rush disposal gets the better of him when teams are smart enough to sit in space, cutting off a blind kick forward and away from congestion. If he can tidy that up, he will be a weapon.

DOMINIC SHEED

Height: 183cm
Weight: 82kg
Team/Club: WA/Subiaco
Position: Midfielder
Player Comparison: Simon Black
Range: 6-15

Player Profile

Dominic Sheed took this year’s national championships by storm, before unfortunately breaking his collarbone in the fourth round of the carnival, which saw a premature end to his championships. The classy, prime mover from WA averaged 27.8 disposals in his four outings, eventually taking home the Larke Medal for Division 1′s best player award. Sheed is an incredible talent; and arguably was the best performed and well-rounded midfielder of the champs, who should be rated much higher than some are giving him credit for. Sheed is high production midfielder, easily shakes a tag, has the endurance and football smarts to run all day, and accumulates an elite number of possessions, whilst averaging 13kms a match throughout the championships. Sheed is a well-balanced midfielder; he can play as a ball-winning extractor, burrowed under the packs, laying tackles and clearing the ball from congestion, or as a free-wheeling, offensive midfielder, propelling his team forward. In attack, he kicks goals from all angles, none better than outside 50 off a step or on the run, in defence, he is cool, calm and collect and players the percentages, finding targets with ease – he is an unforgiving footballer. A super elite ball user, Sheed is damaging on either side of his body, and relishes a one on one contest when resting up forward. He’s a fantastic pressure player, makes good decisions when the heat is on, and when the whips are cracking – Sheed is at the forefront, willing his team on. Rarely ever caught with the footy, Sheed is one of – if not the most exciting prospect in this year’s draft.
Quote

“It was a disappointing way to finish, especially with only a couple of minutes to go. But I was very happy for us to win after the siren. It’s only a collarbone, so obviously an ACL or something like that would have been a lot worse. After surgery you can get back in four weeks.”

- Dom Sheed speaking positively about his injury to AFL reported Callum Twomey.
Strengths:

Elite endurance, fierce tackler and competitior, prolific ball winner, , incredible vision and awareness, composure under pressure, kicks goals from just about anywhere on the ground, wins his own ball, elite at the stoppages where he dominates clearances, strong bodied and is a standout leader, rarely fumbles and is rarely caught, and has a strong influence on the game. Very classy and effective with the ball, damaging, hard to contain and is an elite user of the ball. Very well balanced midfielder who plays inside and outside, is calm and cool under pressure, and runs both ways. When resting up forward, he plays like dominate key forward, able to protect the drop zone and mark above his head, plays tall, and will burn you if allowed too much space. The best, and most consistent midfielder of the championships.
Weaknesses

The only whack on Sheed is his “lack” of pace, in saying that – Sheed rarely gets caught with the football, he knows his limitations.

Then grab Daisy in F/A along with a solid defender and Jack Watts
That would have to be a 10/10 off season.

First Pick (~Pick #11): Dom Sheed/Matt Crouch

Compensation Pick (for Betts - ~Pick #20): Marcus Bontempelli

2nd Pick (~Pick #35): Billy Hartung

... forget about the talls in this draft - I'd only take a speculative one within the 3rd Round.

will be long gone. His recent form has recruiters rating him a top 6 pick. Dont think he'll make it out of the top 10, definatley wont be around at 20.

Id rather we go Bontempelli first pick, and hope Sheed/Freeman slide to pick 20

I respect your posts RK but you have been fairly negative recently I would really like to here your opinions of our potential 1st, 2nd and 3rd round draft picks + your smoky for the rookie draft or late national draft.
Assuming we have a top ten pick (9ish) a pick in the late 20s (27ish) and so forth

How do we really know for sure?

Grundy was a certain top three this time last year, yet was picked up at #18

this is true but i'd argue that he was a slider and GWS or Melbourne should have taken him in my opinion.
but your definitely right, even Tom Boyd isn't a guaranteed pick 1

What's the point in throwing out names and blowing your load over adding someone like Watts to our list?

The majority appear to be regurgitating phantom drafts and/or basing their opinions on watching a few games in the under 18 championships.

Blue and Silver hit the nail on the head..
Priorities for me out of any draftee:

Work ethic
Consistency
Leadership

That is what this group needs.

Seems to be a lot of relatively short players at the top end of this years draft.

Aish, Billings, Salem - 183....................Crouch, Freeman - 181..................Kelly - 182...................Taylor - 173

Our current selections stand at:

#9
#27
#44
#62
#80

If your looking for a bit of a height I think Lemmingmaster got Dumont in the BF phantom draft.

What is wrong with people having opinions based on this?

You've done it yourself many many times using youtube highlights clips of TAC, Champs & SANFL/WAFL matches. No need to talk down other peoples opinions if you don't have one yourself. And if you do have an opinion, share it.

I've only seen limited amounts of this years crop, but the sorts of types of players being thrown around in here seem just the sort of players we're looking for. Whether or not they're any good, time will tell but its a good discussion.

No biggie :thumbsu:

He doesn't play as a taller mid like say Ben Lennon but he's a very neat all round package. Safe disposal, fit, plenty of contested ball, I'm a fan.

Me too. Sounds like the type of player who could play from day one. I'm pretty keen on him since he sounds like the type of player who could be groomed for Judd's current role ( big bodied mid who win clearances and hands it out cleanly to other players).

edit: If we get two early first rounders I'd love getting Crouch and Dumont in the same draft.
