Nice Work, ianh. Beware the last time we recruited for need (2010), Mitchell and McCarthy are no longer with us, thus magnifying this deficiency.

Hampson's departure does halve the ruck depth we had 3 years ago. I'd expect to see Casboult and Kreuzer to trial swapping roles over the preaseason - each to add versatility.

It's worth noting the players in our best 22 approaching 30. Waite, obviously but Judd, Carrazzo, Simpson too.

We have 6 selections in total? I'd go 3 mids, 2 talls and a ruck. Could be the thinking behind Cripps at 13 - if he puts on enough muscle to play KPP.

Can't say I've seen Tippett or Sully but Everitt is a mature-body that will be ready to play round 1.

I wonder if Dayle Garlett is on our radar. The talk is he is top 10 on talent, and MM was coach when Krakouer taken as soon as he got out.

Mick was coach last year too though
We could have had him instead of passing at pick 80 odd

I dont think hes on our radar

I think Hawks v essendon will be fighting for him with their picks in the 20's

I wouldn't mind Garlett but hes not a priority

I reckon Jeffy may have some inside info on Dayle too. Hence, if we didn't draft him last year (or think of drafting him) I don't think he's on our radar this year. It's all well and good that he seems to have cleaned up his attitude etc but he still didn't turn up to meetings with either North or Port during the year. Reckon it's Hawthorn or bust. Maybe he's doing a Darling, and only behaving for Hawthorn so he gets to his club of choice.

Yeah, agree, this way they get a top 10 talent for a second round pick. Risky but high reward if it comes off and not a whole lot lost if not.

Not for us because as someone said, we are not short on fast skilled small forwards without the tank or defensive game for the middle.

Salem is mad Essendon supporter. Just when I thought I was warming to him if Lennon is gone, he has to go and ruin it :P

There seems to be from my research maybe 5 or 6 players from the 5-25 draft pick spots that have had injuries. I feel as though as long as Carlton does their research right we could pick up some real value at #13. Last year it was probably only Stringer and then Menzel who had injuries that affect their draft position, and they were both touted in the top 5. Im unsure if whether any of the 5 to 6 players who were injured could maybe have gone up that far if it werent for their respective injuries, but its interesting to note.

I couldnt be assed writing the list of names, but **** it ive got nothing better to do in Paris on a Sunday night -

McCarthy
Sheed
Acres
Dunstan
Scharenberg

I wouldn't ignore TG as he is too good a poster with regard to vids, news links, player info and the odd laugh. He's a lot less scary than he used to be. His opinions are usually well researched and presented but my beef is his constant put-downs of the humble dissenter.

Yeah the insiders familiar with the player tend to like to overlook the bad in favour of the good.
How did that work with Fev?

I'm trying to get myself mentally prepared for the drafting of Dumont - by watching his highlights over and over.

... and now I'm doing the same with Patty Cripps.

I'm going to wait until end of the week to watch the videos over and over again once we've drafted the kids to convince myself we've made good choices

According to FB rumours (read: CRAP).

Fremantle are set to pip Carlton in the race for the services of launceston co-captain and former pick 6 in the 2006 national draft, Mitch Thorp.

Fremantle are linked to Thorp at pick 37, which is two picks before Carlton's pick 39.

The blues do not hold a second round selection after trading it in the deal that secured Andrjes Everitt.

Thorp was famously selected before Joel Selwood in the national draft in 2006.

Then we take him with our first pick ;) :p

Cue abuse :D

Both good strategies. I favour C4s so I can enjoy draft day as it unfolds. Sick of saying 'who?' or 'why did we reach?'. I want to fist pump and pretend we knew something other clubs didn't.

Then I'll watch the videos over and over and point to one passage of play being 5% better than that of the other mids we could have taken. Mind you Lucas was a slider and is still battling to secure a place in the side, and McCarthy and Mitchell were sliders too so we can do nothing but have faith that reaching sometimes pays off more than grabbing the slider (yeah I know ... Selwood, Darling, Menzel).

Looking at the depth chart of the various clubs set out in The Age club by club guide to the draft

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/clubbyclub-guide-to-the-2013-afl-draft-20131115-2xm5h.html

and averaging them out across the clubs, we get (rounding up because we have less than full lists at the moment)

KPF Av 4.56 (11.88 %) round up to 5 Carlton 4 (10.81%) 9.01% below average
KPD Av 5.56 (14.48 %) round up to 6 Carlton 4 (10.81%) 25.35% below average
mid or small fwd Av 4.72 (12.29 %) round up to 5 Carlton 4 (10.81%) 12.04% below average
mid or small def Av 6.33 (16.49 %) round up to 7 Carlton 7 (18.92%) 14.74% above average
midfielders Av 13.89 (36.18 %) round up to 14 Carlton 16 (43.24%) 11.95% above average
Rucks Av 3.33 ( 8.67 %) round up to 4 Carlton 2 (5.41%) 37.60% below average
TOTAL ROUNDED UP 41 Carlton 37 (100%)

Interestingly, this may suggest our perceived lack of midfielders and small defenders is more a matter of quality than numbers, as they are the 2 areas in which we are above the norm. We are below average everywhere else, from Rucks the worst (37.6%) to Key Forwards the least (9.01%). With rucks this appears clearly a numbers issue purely, as both our ruckman have shown themselves AFL quality, The 2 areas where we are glaringly below average are rucks and key defenders (and in the case of the latter that is despite counting both McInnes and White as key defenders which is in my view borderline).

I've seen the media doing this and the truth is White and McInnes are third defenders capable of playing tall as a stop gap during an injury affected game, not as one of your two talls at either end.

We have Kreuzer and Warnock as our rucks who will both play in the same 22. We need a developing ruck in the VFL or Rowe and Casboult will be assisting Meese or whoever it will be.

Key position players are Casboult, Waite, Rowe, Watson, Henderson and Jamison. 4 will be in the seniors and 2 in the VFL. That's two Carlton listed talls as depth. 3 tall injuries and we are playing Kreuzer at CHF or playing White and McInnes as key defenders for however long it takes. It's just a matter of structure. We could play small in some games but we are robbing Peter to play Paul all over the park without having backup that we can at least try. A mature body is a must and a couple of developing talls.

Got a funny feeling we'll end up taking Sheed after West Coast pass on him and take Freeman.

Would like this. I reckon Sheed is being underrated because it seemed like a given he was going to WC at 11. Great leadership qualities too - which I reckon is a big criteria for us this year.

I'm going to quote knightmare and Emma Quayle. Good judges who wanted a top ten pick for Toovey and Casey Sibosado.

Think Quayle copied her Paddy McCarthy comments for Sharenberg who "calms things down at halfback".

No ex-Glenelg players.

Depends if West Coast want a local boy or a Victorian.
History certainly shows they will go for best available, and it doesn't bother them taking players from Vic.

I would be pretty happy with that.

How would it have to play out though - for that to happen?

Probably require McCarthy to go top 10 and West Coast to take Lennon. Richmond then take Salem. Leaving Sheed for us.

1. Boyd
2. Kelly
3. Scharenberg
4. Bontempelli
5. Kol
6. Billings
7. McCarthy
8. McDonald
9. Freeman
10. Aish
11. Lennon
12. Salem
13. Sheed

Ok, so hearing Freeman is a somewhat remote chance, Salem slightly better, Couch a good chance and Acres better again. Went over Acres highlight reel, and read a bit about him - so he's supposed to be Forward/Midfielder. Highlights showed mostly forward work. Do not really have a grasp of what he's like, TBH. Definitely sounds like he has great potential and offers versatility. I guess the thing that is (rightly or wrongly) swaying me is the acute awareness that we may be facing a midfielder crisis in about two years and want CFC to recruit pure mids first and foremost.

They were trying to play Acres paddock.

I'll have to get back to you on that one C4.
I actually can't remember a year where after the top 2 there could be any number of different ways the top 10 could fall out.
You only have to look at Aish & Bontempelli to see that that they could go anywhere in that top 10-12
